so i'm trying to find html for show/hide that will be accepted by livejournal. all the examples i see here use javascript, which i'm convinced livejournal won't accept.

i am this close to just getting my own site to post my stuff because trying to code around livejournal makes me want to tear my hair out.

do any of you have any advice for this situation? i know there are many, many people among my watchers (by 'many' i mean 'any') who know html pretty well.

who are actually good with computers:

my computer currently has a pretty bad problem. the first symptom is that when i try to scroll on a web page, my scroll on my mouse instead zooms in and out of the page instead of scrolling up and down. then when i try to type, nothing comes out except for the euro sign when i press something on the number row (idk exactly what, i was flailing at that point).

then my CD drive makes an odd noise, my fan starts going haywire, and my computer puts itself to sleep. does not shut off, puts itself to sleep. i have to manually hold down the power button to power it off, leave it sit a few seconds, then turn it back on, at which point it asks if i want to restart in safe mode.

my computer has been doing this for about a month now and i have no idea how to fix it. the only lead i have is that itunes is the only program that refuses to close when i do this. so, um. help?

(i think this is a pretty clear sign that i am loathed by god. on top of the already shitful beginning of the week i had, i'm now coming down with a cold, i have cramps, and my computer is epileptic. great. just great.)

...I don't get tumlbr. I can't figure out how to reply, so I'll say it here:

The past tense of spit is correct as either spit or spat. Grammatically, this is correct, however as far as common usage, spat always implies a bit more... force or disgust behind the action, whereas spit seems to be more... neutral. But that might just be me.

Yeah, technically the test is supposed to pick up on dishonesty but it's not guaranteed to succeed in doing so and if the Director knew he could cheat it. There's no way it would have been able to know. Still, your theory is plausible.

You're right; it was a stupid, bigoted comment, I shouldn't have tried to justify it and you're right in calling me out for it.

I am sorry, both for being rude and sexist and for then trying to justify it as something for which there is no justification.

I would like to say that I didn't intend to insult anybody (which I didn't), but part of me knows that it's a pale reflection on me that I thought that I could say such a thing offhand and thought that it wouldn't be perceived as an insult.

I would also like to think that it's not who I am, but I know that we are defined by our actions, whether we like them or not, and that the only thing that I can do at this point is to apologise and to never be so short sighted, rude and sexist ever again.

So I apologise for what I said and thought, I take it back and eat my words in their entirety and I hope that you believe me when I say that I intend to guard both my tongue and my thoughts in future, because I like to consider myself a nice person, and you just (very rightly) gave me a reality check.

This is here because I would rather talk via comments than across a thread. I'm sorry that I didn't send this earlier, school internet blocks came up just as I read your post, so I couldn't reply, and Skype came down too. At some point you'll probably get this as a message timed from last night over skype.

      In reply to flaarda, #93488:

Before I continue, please let me apologise for giving the wrong impression. I have in fact edited my post to more accurately present my view. I have no problems with Women in Politics, and I think that those who do are sexist pigs.

However, I do have a dislike of political correctness.

I'll admit that I don't exactly have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, but in my time I don't think I've ever seen the words 'Chairwoman' or 'Chairperson' anywhere.
I can actually remember being told off by one of my English teachers, who was a self proclaimed feminist, for writing 'Madame Chairwoman' in the list of honors at the start of a debate speech, because she thought that anybody who insists on the title is just being pretentious.
Obviously the words of a single English teacher in a single valley in the middle of nowhere mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, and I wouldn't have the slightest problem with referring to somebody as the Chairwoman if they so desired, but Chairperson? I just hate that sort of thing. I suppose you could say that I'm viewing it in a biased light since up until now we've always had the person who holds that position referred to as the 'Chairman', but I dislike it when people insist on being politically correct for the sake of it.

      Why?

Because political correctness is about catering for all parties in such a small, nit picky way that it just misses the point. Because people seem to be more concerned that (in this case as a teacher) they shouldn't say 'brainstorm' because it might offend epileptics than that they might actually be teaching the class something. There are people who would tell you off for using the words 'tar them with the same brush' because it's considered racist. Snowmen are sexist, they should be Snowpeople. The list goes on.

I don't disagree with the idea of being equal, fair and not insulting, what I disagree with is people who take it to the point where they're being picky about things that nobody else cares about.
I'm sorry for giving the wrong message

EDIT: Oh, and it wasn't me who gave you the neg mod. I don't do that sort of thing.

I don'tike slash because it involves a level of character distortion that seems wrong to me,,but Shepard has always been a blank slate. And now the creators have announced that after 2 games if bring straight, he can randomly change teams. That's too much distortion for MY Shepard, but with s new one it could be interesting.

My hair is still longer than anyone else working there -- but that's not hard since they mainly have shaved heads or #2 buzz-cuts. I haven't worked on a site in a while though, so I guess I could grow it back... But now I look like Bardak from True Will (but fatter) so I'm reluctant smiley4.gif

Experimentation: I thought the psychological stuff was bad enough when I read about it and saw documentaries on it, after that I didn't even want to know about medican and warfare related stuff smiley2.gif but fair enough, sometimes curiosity can be morbid, and I guess it puts things into perspective knowing these kind of things happen.

Yeah, I read "het" and I thought "What is a "het" anyway." and all I could think of was hats...
So what is a "het"? is that short for something? I'm assuming it's a fan-fic thing?

Ah, readings of fanfic? What kind of fanfic? If it's not sexual I may download it to listen to on my mp3 player -- I don't really get time to read the stuff people write on D.A. and I hate reading off a screen (why can't they make an e-book reader with an e-paper screen that can load PDF and word files onto it?)

The word codec is a portmanteau of 'compressor-decompressor' or, more commonly, 'coder-decoder'.

Experimentation is the route to success I've found.

Playing with ideas and convincing yourself there is no perfect idea will help you a lot.

Top Posts, Comm. Stats, and just getting recommendations from buddies is a cool way to pimp the unknown member.

      EDIT:

Yes. Codecs can change ANY format though. Codecs can change .mp3 to .wav, both of which are digital. OR, they can change from digital to physical (though the quality may not be as good as the original).

      Pretty much. smiley0.gif

Vinyl albums are "lossless" quality. High fidelity. They are like this because the sound is directly recorded into the vinyl. Music goes into a system, and into the needle that scratches the music into the physical medium itself.

CDs are the next best thing to vinyl albums. They're not 100% quality of what it'd be like if you were there. However, CDs typically fit 800 MBs of digital storage/playback data. Your typical album in MP3 or m4a format (these are called "lossy" formats) compresses all the data used in the CD albums. 800 megabytes are run through algorithms that help compact size with a price of quality reduction.

With high bit-rates and good compression algorithms, MP3s and m4a's still sound good. However, there are a lot of little details and differences you might notice with the proper pair of headphones and the ability to rip the actual CD into certain formats.

A "codec" codifies something. The codec for MP3s will rip the songs from the CD in their lossless format, and then run those songs through the proper algorithms to compress the size (and risk losing the quality in result).

However, audiophiles out there like the idea of A: Backing up their physical albums into a digital medium
and B: Listening to their albums the way they were created.

There are many different formats out there for songs to be ripped from albums. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) are two of them.

So instead of Run.mp3 after ripping the song from my CD in iTunes, I can have Snow Patrol - Run.FLAC or Snow Patrol - Run.ALAC (though ALAC uses m4a as a container, that's another tangent to ignore).

Essentially I get to rip my physical albums in high quality sound. I get to listen to Sam's Town in high fidelity for example. And iPods support one of these high quality formats through iTunes, which means I don't have to go all rugged and tweaky with my music device to try to listen to music in lossless. I can carry HIGH FIDELITY with a little iPod.

For me that's win. It's hard to go back to compressed formats after hearing a song in high fidelity for me.

Getting people signed up might be more of a nightmare if you're interviewing users or pimping them out. EVERYONE wants their spot in the limelight.

Audacity is much easier to use when you really familiarize yourself with it of course (key shortcuts ftw) AND having a regular mouse instead of a track pad will probably go a long way.

    • TheTyper

      A codec "codifies" something.

Ever heard of the fact that albums in vinyl instead of digital are "pure" or "lossless" quality?

      Hahahahaha.

      Funny.

If you wanna run a Featured User podcast, good idea. The featured user thing kinda sucks balls at the moment anyways. How to make it awesome? Gonna take a lot of dedication. Sound editing for you will mostly be done in Audacity. It's kinda the uber-win editing program:

      audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

(I recommend the beta, it wins without much issue)
