Everyone forgets these things. Activity level and calorie intake are the two primary things when people start talking about fitness, health, and making changes. However sleep is literally the unsung hero of both athletic performance and body composition. Not only these it has found to be an important regulator of body hormones leading to better health and less fat. You can't really out train a poor diet, and you also count out train or out diet awful sleep patterns.

Not only did my sleep get better when I took up powerlifting, but I started conciously trying to get better sleep. Not particularly so I could recover better, but so I could perform better in the gym. It has both effects but whatever motivates you to get better sleep will work.

Everyone has heard the ways to get better sleep. No movies or games before bed, less caffeine before bed, a quiet dark place and comfortable mattress. Not altering sleep patterns drastically on weekends, etc.

If you're stuck, and think you have your diet and workout/training regimen down, try sleeping more.

The science is there to back this up. However as it's published science it's likely behind a pay wall.

Sleep well, eat right, and lift heavy.

I intend this thread to be a discussion about both sleep and recovery in general. Fire away!

I'm not saying you have to have PhD or even studied it academically, but I find most people are a blank slate when you prod past the surface of whatever 'neat science thing' of the day is.

I absolutely love this game. It's buggy but goddamn is it amazing

One of my favorite aesthetics hands down. Up there with Bastion, Ni No Kuni, and Portal in my personal favorites.

Unrelated, this pale ale made out of random ingredients I had at my house is fucking awesome. If you visit I will give you free beer.

Also I'm out of commission for the gym. Not lifting or climbing is really hard now that it's build into my routine and something I love.

I also may or may not have spent my self-allocated fun part of my tax return on gym gear made by small American businesses. As of late I've been trying to be a consumer conscious of where my dollars go.

So, yup. Spent my Valentines playing League with some awesome people from here and then drinking beer and wishing I could lift. Fuck forever alone. I'm forever a boss. Thought you knew where this journal was going eh? Chump.

But you're not really a chump.

      <3

      P.S.

      I have a blog now:

      algaebraicexpressions.blogspot.com/

It's been stale but I have some posts written to go up. I'll probably copy some of them here anyway. I'll probably relegate the brewing and lifting posts there. So if you're interested in that kind of thing please read and comment if you so desire. If not, that's cool, not everyone is into everything.

I've been weightlifting for awhile now. Way too long for this goal though. I should been here awhile ago and it's not quite a respectable lift yet. But today I deadlifted 315 for one. Still proud, next step 405 for one.

My computer is pretty old. It is a laptop, from 2006. It can't really run Source engine games (maybe barely on the lowest settings, but it is choppy at points so it isn't worthwhile). Right now I'm kind of cash strapped, I just had an unexpected bill show up and it is the beginning of the month so I have all the bills at once to pay. After all bills are paid and I set aside money for savings and charity giving I usually have about $100 or so each month to put toward leisure (which I could save for a computer). If I get a raise at work (might happen, I'll know at the end of the month) I might have more to put toward it. I'm thinking a barebones kit from newegg or tiger direct might be the way to go if I'm building a new rig. They run at reasonable rates (or at least in my opinion they do). It really comes down to how many friends I have that do any gaming and what I need to do to play games with them (for me it is more about the social aspect with friends than being the best player).

I'm not looking to put on too much mass, just toning and strengthening in general is good for me. As for resistance training I'm using either weightless exercises (pushups of various kinds, squats, pullups, and the like) and resistance bands to do things like flys and curls and presses (I've done some reading on proper form and I definitely feel what they say I'm supposed to feel). I typically concentrate on one area of the body, such as chest/back, arms, legs, etc every other day alternating with aerobic training.

I went with Blue Moon because I knew I would like it, but I am perfectly willing to try new beers! Usually I experiment at a bar or restaurant where I can just order ONE and see how I like it, but if there's a local brand I should be enjoying let me know!

Blackest Night is awesome. Green Lantern Rebirth is great too.

The best trades I've read in the past few months though were Incognito and Sleeper.

Also, Cable and Deadpool is a pretty good book too if you're looking for something with a littlemore humor.

And of course you should be on the look out for the Walking Dead, plus Invincible which is a great supero book by the writer of Walking Dead.

PAX is some 1,500 miles away from where I'm at. It's a bit of a drive/flight from where I am, which can add up in costs. Like Moe said in the comments it was a lot of waiting around in lines, and then being let down by the panel in most instances. Despite being a gamer convention the gaming areas were almost always filled.

This last PAX was also a let down due to some other circumstances with cosplay. PAX did have some great times, but just a lot of let downs over the short weekend.

For a fairly meh convention, just the price wasn't worth it at the time.
