This thread is an informational thread, dealing with all things punk. Songs, bands, genres. We talk about it all here.
Anything you wanna talk about, you name it. Like for instance, what's the deal with Punk Revival and Post-Hardcore styles? I know it's trying to say "It's after the 'scene'" But if the music is still around today, why don't they just called it hardcore? or Punk? That's just something I thought was dumb.
I have been on a quest recently searching for punks bands, and I have found quite a few, but I would like to enhance my knowledge. So this will be sort of a self help thread too. State the band name, sub genre, how they sound, similar artists and a little info about them if you want. This will not be a "OMFG GRE3N DAIYE IS TEH GR8IST B4ND EVAR!!! U ALL SUK CUZ I R TEH C00LEST!" thread. Just GTFO if you're gonna be playing favorites like that. We don't want you here. I'll start off.
Here are some of the punk bands I listen to (more frequently):
Authority Zero Punk/ Some Ska Fast singer, fast guitars. Some songs have a very punk sound. Check out Andiamo and A Passage in Time. Sounds sort of like an older Bad Religion.
Bad Religion Punk Old Punk band started in the 80's. How Could Hell Be Any Worse type stuff is more hardcore/ old punk. The stuff when they signed to Atlantic was not so good (to me). Look at Process of Belief and later for faster, heavier guitar work
Blink-182 Pop Punk Budda, Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch had an older sounding vibe. Toned down quality. Not as poppy. Very comical lyrics. Often sappy. Tom DeLonge's voice is it's own whiney. Not emo whiney tho. Mark is better. Catchy chorus'
Dead Kennedys Hardcore Not too familiar with a lot. Pretty hardcore and political. Jello has his own voice. Catchy songs. Odd.
The Descendants Hardcore/Newer stuff is more Pop Punk Old stuff is hardcore, and unique. A lot of comical songs in a lyrical way
Dropkick Murphy's Punk/Irish Punk Punk Band with Irish roots, and bagpipes in songs. Very different singer(s). raspy and manly-er. Good for drinking
The FlatlinersPunk/Ska Punk Young and Fairly new. Saw them open for NOFX, got their CD's, can't stop listening. Fast singer, that has a pretty good scream. guitars have a great mix of Ska and punk riffs.
Flogging MollyIrish Punk Pure Drinking Music. Doesn't get much more Irish/Celtic than this. Great songs, with great chorus'
GoldfingerPop Punk Comidical. Pop Punk. Songs about girls and life.
Less Than Jake Ska mostly all Ska, check them out.
Minor Threat Hardcore/ Straight Edge Original Hardcore band. Very short songs. One of the most famous. Takes a little getting used to at first. Very old sound. But amazing
NOFX Punk/ Skate Punk/ Hardcore/Ska My favorite band ever. Older music is hardcore, then they turn skate punk, and have ska and reggae sounds. Very humorus. Some serious. Political. They have everything. Fat Mike has a very distinct, flat voice. Might take getting used to, but amazing. If you like them Check Bad Religion and Offspring.
The Offspring Pop Punk/Punk Comical. Prettty fast guitars. Quite a few catchy songs. Dexter has a different voice
Rise Against Punk/ Hardcore Older stuff is more hardcore, but they become more generic as the years go on. Deeper voice than most new whiney bands. Prettty good screaming voice. Fast guitar work, mainly chords. Great and catchy
Social Distortion Punk/SoCal Punk w/ Southern sound I learned to love Mike Ness's voice. Talks about life, drugs, drinking, girls. Guitars have some good riffs. Not too fast, and with a southern twang. listne close. Great band.
Streetlight ManifestoSka Very interesting. Lots of brass and trumpet. Quick.Unique singer.
Sublime Punk/Ska Punk Punk and ska. Very mellow. Most songs about drugs, life, sex. Not too fast, if you're looking to slow things down
Suicidal Tendencies Hardcore/ Punk Metal Intense. Fast. Crazy riffs with crazier solos. Screams intense and very good. Go listen to them from the Tony Hawk Games.
Sum 41Pop Punk Poppy band with some catchy songs, older stuff about life, newer about politics. Fuck everything after Chuck.
A Wilhelm Scream Melodic Hardcore/ Punk Career Suicide Their latest album, the first one I heard of them. Blisteringly fast and amazing. Different singer. Deeper raspy voice. Similar to Dropkicks combined with a thrash metal band called Sanctity. One of my new favorite bands.
88 Fingers Louie Hardcore Punk/ PopPunk Rise Against before the lead singer. 1st album 88 Fingers Up Your Ass very punk. Shorter songs, fast guitars with punk rif
I also listen to, but don't know as many songs:
Green Day (Yeah yeah, I listen to Green Day sometimes. Just Nimrod and Dookie though. Sorry. )
(hed) PE(is a little punk)
The Living End
No Use for a Name
Sex Pistols (Yeah say what you want)
and others. That's most of them. If you're into Punk Music, I suggest a documentary that just recently came out called Punk's Not Dead. PHENOMINAL movie if you can get your hands on it. It has tons of great bands an information. Sub Humans, God Awfuls, Vandals, Circle Jerks, Casualties and tons more. AWESOME movie.
