    • I Smell Like the Dump

Helped a friend empty some rooms and take two trailer loads to the landfill. It was misty and nasty rainy all day (not heavy rain, just enough to be irritating, and to make the ground wet everywhere). We moved some other stuff, had lunch, and got him ready to haul some stuff to his brother's place. Basically cleaned out two rooms, decent productivity.

Then I got home, and realized I still smelled like the dump. There was a distinct "landfill" funk. So I took a shower. And I scrubbed and cleaned with more effort than I might in a normal shower.

All was good until I rubbed my nose a few moments ago. My hands still smell like the dump. And part of me feels like I still haven't completely dried off from the rain (despite drying off, showering, and drying off again since I was last outside). This is jacked up.

    • Youtube, Podcasts & The Daily Grind

I don't know when I subconsciously decided to start posting a little blog thing here every day, but I had the realization of "I haven't posted today" like it was some sort of requirement (when I hadn't really made that decision previously), so I guess I'm going to do it. At the very least, maybe it'll help me get started being more active on the site, which I've always wanted to do, but haven't for one reason or another.

But I digress. I've been trying to get caught up my Youtube list recently. I dug around and found that I can remove videos from My Subscriptions with a Chrome plugin. You can do that manually, but it was being ornery for me, sometimes not recognizing that I had removed stuff (it would come back the instant I refreshed), and after a few hours sometimes it would just forget a mess of them and put them back in the feed. The intended goal would be that the most recent unseen video would sit at the top of my feed. I eventually accomplished that, by figuring out that the plugin would also remove "watched" videos, and by realizing that I could watch 2-3 seconds and it would remove it way more reliably than using either Youtube's or the plugin's "remove" button. (there's stuff I watch on the site, or stuff I've watched that it doesn't remember I watch, the occasional video I actually won't watch, or whatever, and so I keep having to watch a few seconds to get videos to go away.

I'm down to about 5 videos from the past month, and am watching them, clearing out my "current" Youtube list (then I'll still have backlogs of stuff for whenever I get bored). Those handful of videos are podcasts, all from ScrewAttack! since I'm now watching their material as they work with the rest of RT. I think I'm caught up on my "recent" Sidescrollers, and now I'm watching the Available Now gaming podcast, and I see they have an anime podcast too.

Then I kinda realized I'm behind on some of my audio podcasts, and like, holy shit, I listen to a lot of podcasts. Here's a list, for grins and giggles.

      1. Rooster Teeth Podcast - I actually created this RT account because of the RT Podcast, becoming a sponsor once it became video only so I could watch it each week. (I had an RT account before that, but it is lost to the annals of time, so I'll save that tale for another time)
      2. The Patch - RT's gaming podcast
      3. Off Topic - Achievement Hunter Podcast
      4. Sportsball - RT's sports podcast (I'm an irregular viewer, but it makes me miss Screen Play)
      5. Dude Soup - Funhaus's podcast
      6. Pretend Wizards - What's called an "Actual Play" RPG podcast. A group of friends sits around a table and plays D&D. (google Acquisitions Incorporated, they started as a podcast, with Penny Arcade and PvP joining forces for a game, and now do live games at PAX and now PAX East every year) It's one of my favorites, over 100 weekly episodes released.
      7. Adventure Zone - another actual play, D&D done by the guys of My Brother My Brother And Me
      8. Crit Juice - irregularly released D&D podcast with comedians and actors drinking while they play, this podcast is the reason I made the transition from watching Acq Inc into listening to a handful of other podcasts. So damn funny.
      9. Cthulhu & Friends - Call of Cthulhu d20 (plays similar to D&D), more edited/produced than others (sound effects, music, editing to cut out some "game talk" during dramatic sequences, etc), but it's still great. Very NSFW compared to others, some great "What the Fuck?" moments (they have a "fuck count", where the f-bombs from a previous episode randomly gives one person a penalty that can potentially insta-kill someone)
      10. How We Roll - Call of Cthulhu (not the d20 system, more percentage based), not too far into it, but this is becoming my next "main" podcast. Great low-tech Cthulhu mystery horror stuff (C&F goes off the rails after season 1 ends, haha)
      11. RPGentlemen - several campaigns (D&D, superhero, etc), I'm just kinda getting through them while I have time. Enjoyable, but I feel like I need to get further to really be able to pass judgement.

And now I'm going to be adding however many Screw Attack has (2 at least, not sure if the Anime one is regular or more like the RT Sponsor Casts). Holy shit I listen to a lot of podcasts. I just about can't keep up. If I ever get more busy, I won't be able to keep up. But I guess having that much enjoyable content to go through is a good thing, over all.

The really scary part is that I'm looking for other podcasts to add to my list (some comedy, some educational, maybe some for writing or fantasy or something that might help me with my own D&D games, who knows) If you've got a podcast recommendation, I'd love to hear it!

Been setting up recording equipment today. Found out I need another stupid little adapter if I want to get adventurous and record my iPad (it'll make a total of like, 6 cables to hook it all up). Also discovered the best way to hold my pop filter in place is with a shitty old rubber band. And now I'm looking for a way to generate heat without generating noise, since my recording space is stupid cold, and I can't have space heater noise in the background. Dagnabit.

A task for another day, I guess. Been sleeping funky all week, finally tired at a decent hour so I can go to bed and get up tomorrow like a normal person. It's gonna be awesome.

So it turns out my feast at the Cheesecake Factory was enough to make me not hungry the next day. Like, I had my leftover 1/3rd of a burger for dinner, along with about half my slice of cheesecake. It was worse than the post-Thanksgiving-Dinner "I'm going to be full forever" feeling.

So I was practically a zombie all day, and didn't get anything done. Well, that's not quite true. I got caught up on Arrow, and started getting caught up on my Youtube backlog, and read some World of Darkness. I've got an itch to see if I can use some WoD material to build a full Vampire class for 5th Edition D&D. That means it'll get 1/3rd of the way developed and will sit in a pile of "work in progress" projects for the rest of eternity, but it'll be fun while it lasts.

Today's objectives. Find the Christmas tree lights. Watch Off Topic. Set up my mic to see about recording some Let's Play stuffs (I'm going to play Fallout! :D no, not Fallout 4. The original. aw yeah)

    • Today Was an Adventure

Had a long, tiring day. Morning was mostly normal. But then, the adventure.

So my mom is a Sweet Adeline (women's barbershop a capella choir, cool stuff, they're competing at the international level in Las Vegas in 2016, so that'll be fun). Sometimes they do extra performances at Christmas, caroling and such, and it brings in extra cash for Christmas shopping or future vacations or whatever. She's filled in for some caroling in Charlotte (nice malls and shopping centers will pay well for it), and some at the Biltmore House in Asheville. This year, they've got some in Biltmore for the tail end of the Christmas season (weekends after Christmas, first of January), and that was it.

Well, apparently the group in Charlotte is doing something different with management (like they used to hire a company to organize it all, and stopped using them, and it was a mess), so there wasn't any caroling down there. Then suddenly, they decided to cancel a tree lighting at the mall or something, and the community wasn't happy, so they organized a new one in the park adjacent to the mall, with carolers and a chorus and the symphony (it rained, no symphony, whatever). So suddenly we had a mid-week trip to Charlotte, and it was a great time for my sister and I to ride along, and do some Christmas shopping while they were busy singing.

So we took off to Ikea, to find a table I wasn't even sure they still sold. (you can look it up, Ikea in the US, a "Norden gateleg table") See, it's a sofa table (tall, long, narrow, meant to sit within arm reach of a sofa to hold stuff you would want to reach from the sofa, plain and simple), but with two leaves so you can quickly make it fill up a lot of space if you need a surface for something. Well, both my parents worked in furniture (in different companies, to boot), and I couldn't think up a single furniture term that would describe such a design that would return it in search results. Hard as I tried, I couldn't find one online at Ikea or anywhere else (I have since learned the term, "gateleg").

So we couldn't find it where it was in the store previously, gave up, kept looking for something similar, found one, liked it, found a second, liked it too, both weren't quite right, but were close. Then we moved a short distance down, and boom, there it was. Jotted down the number, moved downstairs, found a cart, found the isle/bin, got the boxes, and my sister paid for it while I went and moved the car to the loading area.

Then we drove to the mall they were singing at and went to the Cheesecake Factory. Had appetizers, most of dinner (the rest will be delicious lunch tomorrow, which is awesome), and some cheesecake for later. I swear it was more of an adventure than it sounds. It was a lot of driving and craziness getting to the right places and all that, but still.

I'm exhausted. Trash has to go out. Ugh. I had people talking to me the entire drive, so I didn't get to listen to any podcasts (which is what I do when driving, I'm slowly collecting a stupid number of podcasts to listen to in my spare time, I'll never keep up).

But I found something awesome my mom wants for Christmas, and my sister helped me go get it, and Samurai Jack is coming back in 2016 HOLY SHIT CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! So all is well.

    • The Journey of a Thousand Miles

Things have been... curious, recently. You know those big moments in life, where things change? Maybe things can't go back, or are forced to change going forwards, but things change. Moving, graduation, losing a loved one, getting married, a house fire, an automobile accident, getting a new pet, tons of things can inflict permanent change on life, where even if a lot stays the same, others are fundamentally shifted. We all experience these things at one point or another. Things happen, and mark phases of life, it's just how things happen.

The curious thing is, I can feel it coming, but... don't know what it is, or what it even could be. You can't prepare for unexpected things, but you can't prepare for things you can't identify, either. I've got this semi-tense feeling all the time that I should be doing something else, getting ready, or taking advantage of the status quo before it changes, with no real indicator that this is a logical feeling.

I don't know where I'm headed, or why, or when, but if the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, I've got this incredible urge to put on my shoes... We'll see where it goes.

Funhaus is crowd sourcing subtitles from fans so people who don't speak english can still enjoy their content. It's awesome, and there are tons of fans that are pitching in to help.

I realized I couldn't help, because I don't speak or read any languages fluently enough to be useful for typing up subtitles.

Well, unless Igpay Atinlay counts as a language for Google.

I checked. It doesn't. I'm disappointed. Filed feedback with Google. Hopefully they'll get it fixed and people can start enjoying Funhaus videos with subtitles in Igpay Atinlay soon.

They're going to add a +1 WTF! mod, and are looking for a negative counterpart. I suggested -1 ಠ_ಠ, because an obvious counterpoint to a "WTF!" shout of exclamation is the look of disapproval. Crossing my fingers, it would be epic for that to actually become a thing. (and for the love of all things holy, I hope we don't get a "-1 cringe" type mod, it's a self-fulfilling prophesy, the only cringe on the website will be when people use such a shitty mod...)

      COME ON, -1 ಠ_ಠ! LET'S DO THIS!

    • Checking out the New Site Beta

Looks spiffy. More modern and streamlined, but it feels like it's lacking a little color. And it did the same thing Penny-Arcade did, where clear lines dividing different sections are just completely absent in some places (the solid red line between entries on any of the main pages is excellent, but the forums could use them between sections as well).

The forums don't appear to have been archived, which was one of my major complaints of the old site. I ran a forum for like, 100 people, and we had to archive content once a quarter to keep the clutter down, and yet when you go to the First Stop forum and click the Questions topic, it has 36,596 posts going back 10 years. It just makes it seem like a waste of time to join in on a conversation. I love forums, but it feels like RT's is going out of its way to make it undesirable to use or something.

But I won't get too down about it. This is the beta for a full site change, and I don't think we have access to everything that's new (it's less of a "find bugs and help us fix them" beta, and more of a "use the website normally so we can see traffic flow and future proof for the full userbase being here" kind of beta). And some things are cool. (especially being able to change my username, hellz yeah!)

But so far, it feels like they've put a lot of work into it, but all in areas that I don't personally use/notice, making it hard for me to appreciate the improvements. I'm sure we'll get a changelog soon (or I'll find one that already exists, just as likely). And maybe Adam can get his own t-shirt for the hard work.

Well....you may be a Gamer, nerd, scientist, musician, crafter, handyman, cook, comedian, reader, writer, troper, writer of lists, owner of random gizmos, son of two engineers, modern day renaissance man, photographer, fan of a wide variety of things, cosplayer, convention attendee, he who stays up late and (tries to) get up early, letsplayer, Jedi, Trekkie, and man who breaks into song at random. While I do have years of experience with pillow forts, I do have to admit that it's all casual experience, and it doesn't collectively warrant the title of "Engineer" by any means.

Bravo sir. Your pillow forts must be amazing.
