There's a few TV shows I've been meaning to get into, but I haven't had the time. It's hard to get started with a whole new series because you've got to watch them from the beginning, and most TV shows suck at the beginning. But seeing as how everybody down in my unit is that they've got nothing but time, I figure I'll knock something out.

Also, don't bother mentioning The Office, CYE, or Always Sunny. I don't like the Office, and I watch the other two already.

Okay, so I havn't talked about my trip to NY yet because I still havn't been able to post the few pictures I took (so few in fact, I didn't even get any shots of me with Vicky or Zach). So I'll just tell you guys right now, I had a blast. It was worth every penny spent, and I hope to go back sometime after the sandbox with a bunch of friends.

I didn't get to chill with Vicky and Zach all that long, but they were great hosts when I was there. I played their games, peed In their toilet (with the door open... leaving the seat up when I was done), and ate their egg whites.

I went to the Museum of Natural Hhstory and Times Square, but most of the fun I had was just when I was walking the city. There's a real life to NYC that I have never seen before in my life.

So if you get the chance, stop by NYC. Eat some good food, sleep on your friends' inflatable matresses, and just walk around the city.

I've been slacking on my PT and have been eating a lot of dog shit food. I've been Working out enough to maintain my PT score, but it's also reflecting in my appearence. So before I leave for the sandbox, I thought I'd set some goals:

Short term (before I leave Iraq next year):
      -drop to 160lbs
-run 2 miles under 14:00 minutes
-do 80 sit-ups in two minutes
-do 65 push-ups in two minutes

      Long-term:
-I only have one long-term goal: I want to go to Ranger School and serve a tour with a ranger unit. I figure that that kind of experience will set me up for success that will last the rest of my life, military or civilian.

It's hands-down the worst game I've played all year.

Everything about AC that sucked in the first game: the combat, the actual assassinations, the long unskippable cutscenes are back. A new element involves Ezio sneaking around in restricted areas full of nothing but guards, but it fails in comparison to better games because AC is about hiding in plain sight, not skulking in the shadows.

There are some pluses in AC2. The setting is good, but not as compelling like in AC. In AC, Altiar played a key role going from city to city in the middle of two warring nations. And while each city was similar, you could clearly tell them all apart by their own unique architecture, even between the two arabic cities Damascus and Jeruselum. All the cities in AC2 clearly look Roman in origin, without much of a difference between one city to the next. Being able to blend into crowds is a plus, but it's kind of useless when the game is always pushing you to climb the ramparts and open the gate for your mercenaries, or when your target waits to reveal himself until a massive battle ensues.

My dumbass should have seen it coming when AC2 was touted for having all new weapons and ways to assassinate your from 20 feet away, but I went ahead and bought it, meaning I can't buy Up or Star Trek anytime soon =(

my friend arrives on post tonight, and he's bringing his wife's hot best friend. He's spent a lot of time talking me up, so I'm all psyched. Only... she's into football, like a lot, and I haven't watch a single game this entire season. So I'm sitting here memorizing Cowboys' stats so that I can at least run my mouth when we're talking.

I don't know if I'm all nervous after being stuck at Huachuca since forever, or because I've never been on a blind date, but I don't think I've ever been this nervous about a date before. I'm too shy for a blind date :(

I already figured that. I'd just put everything in storage here, buy another air bed, and move nothing but my clothes, my kitchen shit, and my TV/xbox... heh. I don't need more than a studio apartment; it's only for six months. Just need somewhere to eat, sleep, and shit. I just DON'T want to go another six months apart if I don't have to. If they'll let him stay off post, then I'll be happy.

I don't give a flying shit about PCS vs TDY; I just don't want to be without him for another 6-7 months. I have no problem moving on my own dime as long as they'll let him live off-post with me. I just didn't know if it was like basic where you HAD to live in the barracks and do room checks and up at the same time, eat at the same time, all that shit... or if you had the freedom to do whatever you wanted after the work day was over.

    • Vicki

So... dumb question time. While you were in training, were you REQUIRED to live in the barracks, or could you get housing off post if you wanted?

Mainly going to post here as I don't think anyone in the thread cares for this other than Vosh but I haven't seen another response of his in the thread indicating that he wants to continue this conversation.

Insurance works by pooling in money to be divided amongst those who end up collecting it. The problem is that healthy people often chose to opt out of health care thereby making the pool even riskier, forcing companies to raise prices. The only reason why we're not all paying $300 a month for insurance is because the government grants massive subsidies to insurance companies creating an artificial price ceiling.

I understand how insurance works. It's only slightly less of a scam than fractional reserve banking but let's save that conversation for another time.

As you have said, those who are healthy opt out of insurance as they believe that they can get more satisfaction using their money on other goods than protection against something that may never occur to them. Yes, this sucks for everyone else who wishes to purchase insurance at the original price level as some of them will not be able to or want to pay for the higher price level required by the insurance companies to make a profit off of a riskier population than before. What should be noted here is that people will continue to pay for insurance until they believe that further spending on insurance yields less satisfaction than using that same amount of money on something else.

I think it's a failing because by choosing not to contribute, I have to pay more money.

And yes, I understand that I'm taking away their sacred right to chose because their choices affect me.

So everyone else has to be required to contribute to something that they may not want just to lower your expenses? No offense but cry more; you value this product enough to buy it and others don't.

I'd love it if people would give me a piss easy job and still pay me 6-7 figures a year for no reason but it's not in the interests of anyone to do so. Or, for another example, I could purchase all of my foodstuffs for $1 US a month or something equally ridiculous because it would make my life so much easier to spend less at the cost of others. That certainly isn't fair to anyone else.

And if that means that they don't get to drink as much beer, so be it. You don't find a lot those ber drinkers complaining about government sponsored health insurance after they break their hip and have to get $70,000 worth of surgery to have it fixed.

This is the problem with overly simplified examples: while they can be helpful in explaining something, they grossly distort reality. Who says everyone will just buy booze over insurance? I will not suggest that no one ever would, but it seems more likely to me that people not interested in health insurance (because they have assigned values to using the money that would be spent on health insurance NOW compared to a probability of getting into an accident and needing insurance LATER and determined that their present benefits outweigh any in the future, regardless of what the future holds.) would spend it on something more constructive, such as paying off a mortgage, student loans, bills, home repairs, saving it for their children or future purchases, etc.

As for those beer drinkers who begin to cry about their luck in getting into an accident and not having insurance, I have no pity for them. They fucking chose to waste their money on something other than insurance. No one threatened them in any way to not get insurance, they consciously decided that they did not want insurance and are reaping the fruits of their decision

Now if they were to ask for help in paying off their bills without having a hissy fit, I'd be willing to help them so long as I can get some net benefit out of it (being a good Samaritan + possible future pay-off as the person injured is able to pay me back for my help. Note that I may still lose money but being a good Samaritan is just that damn nice that it may balance out whatever money I may lose, as I will not see it as a lose but an investment on the health of someone else).

I said that when everybody contributes they actually pay less because the government doesn't have to continue paying massive subsidies to insurance companies, and a less risky pool means cheaper insurance.

I completely agree. However, we still seem to disagree on whether or not people should have the choice to decide on getting health insurance or not, even when they don't see the benefit in doing so. I don't think it's fair to those who decide to opt out of insurance because they feel they can get their money's worth from something else; you don't think it's fair that people opting out makes your expenses greater.

And all those people who think that they didn't need insurance won't have anything to complain about when they contract cancer or break a bone because they'll end up getting coverage.. As opposed to spending a lifetime paying back debt, living with a painful injury, or dying.

These people opt out because they don't think they will contract cancer, break limbs or other serious medical conditions. If and when they do is besides the point; if they could somehow look into the future and know how they will get injured, you could be your ass that this would significantly influence their decision on purchasing insurance or not. The fact is, we can't do this, thus we make our best educated guess on multitudes of decisions and hope that they don't turn out to be bad decisions.

Well money doesn't just disappear anyway.

What do you call it when the Fed sells securities then?

Even if money is spent somewhat irresponsibly, it still trickles down to people in one way or another as long as it isn't spent on one bad investment.

True, but there are two problems that need to be addressed with any stimulus package:

      1) Who gets the money first?

      2) How diminished is the purchasing power of those who get the have to wait for the stimulus package to "trickle down"?

If it's the disproportionately wealthy elite who benefits the greatest from the package, it really doesn't do much of a stimulus for the economy of the "average" American.

So far, it remains to be seen if the stimulus packages are harmful or helpful in the long run.

Given the track record of every stimulus plan, I won't hold my breath.

      Also, fuck mr_patriotic.
