(this turned out to be a lot longer then I intended... TLDR: I drafted for the first time and did alright going 3-2... but it was close and stressful)
I went to my first Magic the gathering draft this past Friday. That night I experienced sweeping victory, crushing defeat, pulling wins from the brink of death and lose that should not have been. It was a fun experience and the first time I have played Magic with people who are not close friends. I also signed up for a sealed two headed giant tournament at the pre-release, which I am looking forward to like you wouldn't believe. all in all it was a good night.
so drafting is really freaking complicated, well on the surface it is simple but when you want to try and do well there is a ton to think about. You are seated at table with 7 others and pass around booster packs and try to create a deck with the cards that you pick. The complicated part comes from not knowing what your opponents are going to play and try to create a COHESIVE deck. the cohesive part is the hardest because while you can create a deck with just about anything, it may or may not be any good.
I was able to build a kinda cohesive deck around red white allies (red and white are colors and allies is a creature type that has synergy) it was an agro deck that had several enter the play effects. The deck was really lacking good removal and contestant card draw, I plan on making it into standard deck but it is going to take some work.
The highs and lows of playing against other people where so high and so low! In the first match I won 2-0, I steam rolled them! it felt so good it gave me confidence that my deck worked and I had picked decent cards! the next match I played however did not go so well. I lost 0-2 but my first game I had to mulligan down to 5 cards and even with that it was close. The second game was even closer... and I MISSED A TRIGGER! I missed pinging the guy for 2 damage which would have won me the game and sent us on to a third game to decide the match! OH THE FEELS! it was so bad! I even had a friend come over and look at what was going on and he saw it and when I told him that I lost he was so surprised. He asked what about the promancers assault? and I realized that I missed it (I had planned to use it but during the game I missed it... it was so bad!)
my third and fourth matches did not go well at all! I got steam rolled twice. Match three was against a super good deck and I also got screwed on the draw, so the games where not close. The fourth match was also not great as my draws where not great but the other guy's deck was just better (he also drafted a lot so he knew what he was doing) BUT! when game three was coming to a close his girl friend (actually the person I played in match one) came over and they talked about leaving. it was a short conversation but she had lost and was not going to be able to win anything and so he said he was ready to go, she protested and he promptly resigned... giving me the win.... he didnt have to he could have taken the win and still left but he didnt he knew I was going to keep playing and didnt want me to stop just because he was going to leave (I am going to thank him next time I see him for that)
My fifth and final game was really late, like at 11:20 PM against a guy who was listening to heavy metal while playing (super nice guy) But before we started playing he offered that one of us concede and split the winnings. I declined because I thought I could win and so we played the first two game and split them... at the start of game three I jokingly said "man... so how about them packs" we both got a chuckle out of that and kept playing... about 5 turns later he said the same thing because I was about to beat him. I eventually won the match 2-1 and collected my winnings (I should have split the packs with him because he was just such a good dude about)
It was a ton of fun and I want to do it again... I think when the next set comes out I will do more drafts. I also signed up for the two headed giant tourney with a close buddy of mine. that will be tons of fun and I think we can do well with that. We know how the other plays and both are at least competent when it comes to deck building... There were also cute girls there so that it a big bonus.
