2016 wasn’t all bad. One of my favorite things to come of this year was Jules’ monthly fan-voted “Top 10” video game guitar medleys. It was one of the highlights of each month for me. :)

This show is... kinda of close to what I initially expected it to be.

      Why.

Why, why, why does this exist?

UPDATE many months later: Just occurred to me someone might see this journal entry and inaccurately assume my opinion of this show. I actually rather like it. However, I still stand by the first episode being terrible. :P

So I'm watching Yuri!!! On ICE for the anime club on the Fan Service podcast, and it recently occurred to me that I like everything about this show except for the main character, who I can't stand.

THIS POST DOES NOT CONTAIN SPOILERS

Just got back from Captain America: Civil War, which officially premieres in the US tomorrow.

As someone who loves the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this movie was a real treat. A large cast of characters—almost all of whom I know and have become attached to—interacting, bantering, and battling throughout a highly political, yet deeply personal story.

Objectively, it took some time for the focus of the film to become clear. It jumped around a lot at the beginning with no clear course, but the film didn't suffer from this in any notable way. It's also very dependent on almost all previous films in the MCU. It's very important that you've at the very least seen all of the Iron Man and Captain America films, because the most core characters of Civil War are predominantly from those films, and their development throughout the saga is essential to this story.

Predictably, I loved it. A lot. The characters were everything; the story was expertly pulled off. A couple of the fight scenes were too fast-paced to easily follow what was going on, but the rest were absolutely astounding. The music was great, although it didn't make a distinct impression on me. Definitely noticed that Jackman reused his Winter Soldier theme several times.

If you haven't seen any of its predecessors, you'll be quite lost. If you have and you enjoyed them, you'll probably enjoy this one too. As I said, it's a real treat.

When you watch a season finale of something that leaves you so shocked that you need to vent to someone BUT NOBODY YOU KNOW HAS WATCHED THE SERIES. The person who got me into the series in the first place up and took a break from it within half a season of me catching up to him.

      Holy. Shit.

      Holy. Fucking. Shit.

I'm don't think my mind has ever been tricked like that before.

2-3 weeks ago, I randomly came across this EP on Bandcamp, and I can't stop listening to it. It's written by Ben Landis, and features the vocals of a girl named Jessica Ryan. If that name sounds familiar... well, it's also the name of a porn star. But this ain't her, hahah.

This album's just so damn good. You should definitely listen to it. Anyone have any recommendations of other similar-sounding artists with quality lyrics?

Unexpected is 100% free on Bandcamp. You can't even pay money if you want to.

So after a free trial, one month at full price, and three months at half price, I'm finally cancelling my Audible subscription. (The price is about to go back up to full.) I also splurged and bought a handful of cheap audiobooks at the end. This is my final Audible library, for the present time.

Bear in mind that I have a focusing problem, so finding exceptional narrators was an important factor in what books I chose. They couldn't just be "good" or "great"; they had to be capable of keeping my attention, which isn't particularly easy. Thus, I ended up with a fair amount of author-read memoirs. I wouldn't have expected that. But I'm not complaining. They're really good.

    • Agent Carter Season 2 (Spoiler-Free)

Tonight was the finale to the second season of Agent Carter, and honestly I'm left feeling kind of... conflicted. The first season told an expertly-written story that perfectly fit its concise length of eight episodes. This year, they presumably aimed to do the same thing, but then at some point they were given ten episodes instead of eight. So then, they had to stretch the story over two additional episodes, which entirely messed up the pacing. The story felt slow and drawn out, and at times kind of poorly done. I had many problems with the finale episode alone, but I won't go into details so as to avoid spoilers.

That being said, there were many aspects of the season that I very much enjoyed. All of the returning lead actors (Hayley Atwell, Enver Gjokaj, James D'Arcy, Chad Michael Murray) did a fantastic job, except of course in the parts that felt poorly done as a whole. The season also introduced Wynn Everett as the villain Whitney Frost, who did an incredible job; and every moment Bridget Regan was on screen as Dottie Underwood (reprised from the first season) she absolutely stole the show.

Overall, the season had a lot of potential, but I felt a lot of it was wasted. The idea of an action-adventure spy drama set in the 1940s of Marvel's cinematic universe is a unique and exciting premise that the first season lived up to without question. The second season had its fair share of impeccable writing and incredible acting, but it was disappointingly balanced out by awkward pacing and what sometimes just felt like sloppiness.

Honestly, this was a good season; but that's the problem: It was good, not incredible. The first season was honestly one of the greatest seasons on television this decade. Season 2, on the other hand, hardly even aimed for par, and whether it reached it is debatable. It can be compared to the first half of SHIELD's third season. There's so much potential, but they didn't tap into it nearly as much as they should have, and so they end up with a series that just feels... a little off.

I'm not nearly as excited for a potential Season 3 as I was excited for Season 2. I want to know how the story proceeds, but not really so much if it's told with the pacing and shortcomings of this season. They had a good thing going and... kind of hit a hitch in the road. It was really good, but nowhere near as good as it was before. Hopefully the series can recover if it's given the chance.

In conclusion, Agent Carter Season 2 probably didn't deserve to get five massive paragraphs from me when other series I recently watched that were far superior (Lost, RWBY, Veronica Mars) got little or no coverage from me at all. Oops.
