Not going to lie. I love watching AH stuff, but I still haven't finished the Outlast series yet. I'm still only on part 4, since while horror movies and shows don't really affect me, horror games and gameplay makes me shit my pants constantly.....

I react to scary situations just like Michael, as in I just go in shock and I make no sound, while my brother is just like Gavin and screams at the top of his lungs. And tbh I still don't know which one I prefer.

My place got broken in today and the guy opened my door, tried to convince me that I left my side door open and was being a good Samaritan and coming in to tell me and then quickly sprinted out the door as quickly as he could. A bit shocking but this video should help loads :)

There's a person in the room walking towards them. If you pause it as it zooms in you can see the person on the left side of the screen.

it's sucks when nothing but jumpscares is mistaken as being "scary". Bring on the -1 Lames, but seriously I'm surprised Outlast is so popular. It's literally ONLY jumpscares. Sure if one happens I'll jump, but that's just an impulse reaction. There's nothing creepy or clever about that. I don't know..

Jumpscares get the most reaction. The game as a whole is genuinely creepy and tense. The game that only relies on jumpscares is Until Dawn.

I'd argue the opposite. Based on the let's play they did outlast did fantastic at not relying on jump scares. You have no idea how many times I had to pause the let's play halfway through a chase scene. Yes there are jump scares in the game, but the scariest bits are navigating (stealth or otherwise) the level when you know someone is out there patroling. You mostly see who's going to kill you in advance and is given an opportunity to escape. There is hardly a "oh you did this wrong, now you get a jump scare and die" in this game.

Tbh this compliation wasn't as scary as the play through itself because there's no build up to them getting killed. It's fun to watch their reactions though

I guess this game was a bad example. I should probably watch more than the scare compilation and episode 1 before I open my big fucking mouth.

Until Dawn is a better example. I just don't like the Five Nights at Freddy's "OH SHIT THIS GAME IS SCARY BRO 420 PASS THE MONSTER" trend that is occurring in games now.

      P.T. was awesome though.

What Shadowstrike said. There are many different kinds of fear: dread, terror, horror, alarm, panic, etc. This game uses a lot of them very well. Jump scares rely almost entirely on alarm. A sudden, in your face scare that causes you to freeze up and make incoherent Gavin noises. Alarm would be when Michael and Gavin are sidling through pallets and someone reaches out at them. That isn't hard to do. But the moments when you're watching Chris rip someone's head off(horror), hiding under behind a door and wondering if Chris will see you when he walks in the room(dread), or running down a hallway because the music got intense but you can't see what's chasing you(terror) are all excellent uses of fear in a video game. It's very difficult to make a game that comprehensive instead of being just alarm(FNAF) or just terror(Dead By Daylight). This has been your daily lesson in how to make things scary without relying on a single trope and running it into the ground. Your welcome.

Interesting, I used Outlast as an example to argue the exact opposite this week. Sure, any horror game is bound to have jumpscares, but Outlast did it very well. There isn't a two-second scare tactic, you still have to escape the enemy. You still have to think strategically through the fear, which makes it not only harder but a better game overall.
