I mean the shaking after not drinking is at least early stage alcoholism. Also it can kill you if you just stop. Seizures, stroke, heart attacks and so on. That's even before Delirium Tremens.

Benzos and alcohol don't take them lightly.

Although I doubt you're at risk if all you have is mild shakes, sweats and nausea, but everyone's different. You should take a mild withdrawal more seriously if you already have high blood pressure though.

It's a shame Michael is talking so much about tests to be able to vote, something rooted so deeply in racism and discrimination.  Not saying he feels that way, I understand what he means but boy is that a slippery slope.  That would be an enormous step backwards and an insult to the thousands who have given their life to get suffrage.

I understand how back in the day that thinking was dangerous because minorities and women didn't have access to the same quality education as white men, if any at all, but over time I think things regarding education have gotten better. It's obviously not totally equal, but better. However, as Michael said the test shouldn't be an intelligence thing like involving math or science. It should just show that you have a general understanding of politics, who you are voting for, what those people want to do and what could possibly change.

    • PudPuncher69 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Well we already have a hard time getting people to vote its not gonna help getting people to the polls if they have to take a test every voting season. That is unless we give people a day paid leave so that people would have more time to vote like some other countries do and change voting days to Fridays and Saturdays.

    • Jekod FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

The issue with requiring a test for voting hasn't really changed all that much with more access to education.  The problem is who gets to decide what the requirements to vote are?  We already have enough issues with gerrymandering and requiring a test would just compound the issue.

    • Gamer3427 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold taC terceS

@PudPuncher69 Part of the reason that we have such a hard time getting people to vote is because of problems with our current government system as a whole. People aren't really given any incentive to vote, because politicians tend to be picked by what the two parties want, rather than what the people as a whole want. And it's all but impossible for anyone with an informed opinion to get third party or independent candidates into office, due to those without informed opinions either viewing the Republican or Democrat candidates as the only ones running, or because they vote based purely on party, rather than on policies. Add to this the drastically higher funding that the two main parties have for campaigning, and that news companies only focus on those candidates, and any other candidates don't stand any chance unless they find some new way of campaigning, (personal idea on that is focusing on running internet campaigns and youtube advertisements, which could work as shown by the "Deez Nuts" joke campaign, which had an estimated 8-10% of the vote before being shut down, despite being obviously a joke). All of this combined with the fact that the Electoral College system can both completely override the popular vote, (as shown a few times throughout history), and only has proportional representation in a few states, makes many voters feel like their vote doesn't matter. This isn't helped in the slightest by the fact that for years, the president had very little actual power and was more of a figurehead than anything else, though Obama did start to change that. All in all, it has led to a lot of voter apathy by the majority of people with any real political knowledge or care about the policies, which along with other factors, means the only ones who would vote with intelligence, don't vote at all. And a lot of the time even when there are some people who vote with intelligence, they feel the only option is the "lesser of two evils", rather than ever being able to vote on someone whom they agree with. The system as a whole is entirely broken at the moment, and it's not changing anytime soon. A test of some sort might not improve the results, but it also wouldn't hurt them either......

Michael gave examples and it's clear what he means.  Not an intelligence test, but an involvement test.  If you don't even know your own candidates position on policies, you shouldn't be allowed to vote for him.   Party line votes are what make it nearly impossible for a 3rd party candidate to have a chance in this country, and it's a damn shame.

There used to voting tests and such in the US before they abolished that shit, it was mostly used to keep low income minorities from voting and had a heavy racist agenda. I agree that people should make informed opinions and double check their side of things before voting for whoever but voting tests guaranteed that minority groups couldn't get the representation they needed. That being said if someone can't answer who the previous president was they probably aren't informed enough to make an educated vote. But even simple "tests" like that could lead back to preventing minority groups from getting their proportional representation (which we haven't succeeded in yet anyways).

it would be a good idea NOW though since everyone has access to the same public education, libraries, internet, etc... so a particular race or gender wouldnt be, by design, misrepresented. if you dont know anything about the candidates, then you shouldnt be allowed to vote. its a very sensible idea that would be WAY to hard to implement.

I agree that in the past, it was a bad thing because it was focused on actual education and meant to keep the less intelligent down. What I think Michael was more implying though, is that the ones voting should at least have to prove that they know what the basic policies are and what exactly they're voting for. As it stands, a large portion of the people who do vote, vote based solely on party or just the mudslinging they've heard, and don't know anything about the policies or pay attention to politics even enough to tell basic things like who was in charge before, as per the "who was the last president" comment......
