Based on most science fiction, I think not.

    However it might be fun.

I'd imagine "this" refers to the day of this week and whether its future or past depends on the tense of the verb i.e. came out or comes out. It is also optional in most cases with only the day required for the sentence but that doesn't make in grammatically incorrect.

Xbox had fire which was great but Sony had water which is shite according to Jack???
I believe Xbox had better announcements but Sony had a better conference in terms of just bang/bang/bang no pissing about with people talking on stage.

Ubisoft was mostly meh to me with the Assassin's Creed coverage being shocking, The Crew going on WAY too long and Mario/Rabbids took forever to show with the longest talk pre-trailer ever. I don't get how anyone can say Ubisoft won.

Bethesda and Sony had short and slick presentations, which I prefer but yeah the problem was that we knew about everything they showed. Xbox showed some excellent new games though! And showing off a console is always fun.

lol.  That fucking argument.  I swear they script these arguments, they're so ridiculous (I'm kidding).  Jack is insane and Ryan is just bad with words because he's the FlubLord.  You're both trying to make this a binary issue, like it could only either be 'this' or 'last.'

So, today's Wednesday.  If I were talking about a thing that happened two days ago, I'd just say 'Monday.'  If I were talking about something that's going to happen two days from now, I'd just say 'Friday.'  I've NEVER encountered someone who was confused about what I meant in this context.  I'm using a singular word, so they know I'm not talking about EVERY Monday/Friday and because I didn't specify that it's in the distant future/past, they know I'm talking about the closest Monday/Friday.  Whether or not I'm talking about the future or the past would have been made clear within the context of the conversation.  So, in this case, if I said "it comes out Tuesday" they'd know I'm using the future tense and if I said "it came out Tuesday" they'd know I'm using the past tense.  This is how normal people talk.

I'd never say 'this Tuesday' in reference to a day that has already passed, that makes no sense.  Jack's using the orientation of the days on a calendar to define what makes a week.  That's nonsense.  A week is just seven days, bar none.  The days' orientation on the calendar is incidental.  That being said, I'd also never say 'last Tuesday' unless there was another Tuesday between now and the Tuesday I'm referring to.  There's no need to throw in the extra modifying words otherwise.  That's how confusion and arguments like this happen lol.  Talking is about effective communication, if people are getting confused about such a simple idea, you're doing it wrong.

For the "this" argument both are correct, you NEED to listen/look at the words surrounding "this"

If I say "This Tuesday I'm going shopping" then I'm obviously referring to the nearest Tuesday in the future.*

If I say "This Tuesday I went shopping" then I'm referring to the nearest Tuesday in the past.*

*The only exceptions are when the word this could be replaced with either yesterday or tomorrow, then the word this would mean the Tuesday 8 days in the past/future

That's just my view on it

Just because I thought of this in a different comment that I replied to, and it sorta seems like a better explanation, I feel I should just plop it here and maybe people will choose to understand other peoples interpretation of the subject rather than argue who's right, no ones gonna win if they just argue anyway, that's just how it is, anyway, here it is.

I only say "This Tuesday" if it's like 2 days away, never have I said it after that day passed. I'd say "Last Tuesday" like Ryan said because that's how I was taught, just like how I was taught to speak of the Tuesday before the one that just passed as "The Tuesday before last." Maybe it's just how people are taught in different areas, even in one country many people have different ways of using the same language, we can all still be right in our own regards.

If you said "it WAS this Monday" it was the Monday that passed, if you saw "it IS this Monday" it is the Monday coming up!

(Edit) So, in this case, saying "it CAME OUT this Tuesday" implies the Tuesday that has most recently passed, but if Jack had said "it COMES OUT this Tuesday" it would imply that it is coming out on the next Tuesday coming up. So, it's really context. I'll give my vote to Jack  jack

C'mon Jack, I love you but you gotta know when to admit that you're wrong. In the game of language, the "wrong" answer is whatever is misunderstood by the minority because that's all language is, a way to accurately communicate. The fewer people who understand what you mean when you say something, the more wrong you are. It's why Gavin has to adapt himself to using American English if he wants to be understood while living here.

I know this has the frustrating side effect of legitimizing previously "wrong" use of language like how "literally" can be used to mean a hyperbolic example of something figurative and be a correct use of the redefinition of the word but language is a cultural product and we have to accept the consequences that come with that. By all means keep using "next _____" to mean what you already use it to mean, but don't pretend that you are correct in your usage.

Aw, I should have waited a little longer before commenting and I could have seen Ryan make my argument for me when Becca demonstrated that this is a topic of semantics and not grammar. Grammar is parts of speech, semantics is the meaning behind the words that are used.

But also the surprise appearance of Max was a delight.

Also, Ryan, Jack, Geoff, and Gavin all need to read the Expanse series of books if they are so interested in the speculation of humanity spreading out into the solar system. Maybe then they would know that Mars has ~1/3 of Earth's gravity while the Moon is at 1/6 (<3).

First; Yay Lindsay is back! Second of all I have no idea what the heck Geoff and Jack are on about the Sony press conference and the "lack" of stage usage. It was fine, very theatrical but fine. Honestly I'm not an Xbox or PS fanboy just a fan of games and when I watched E3 it's not for the stage presence but like Gavin said I'm watching for the announcements. And as for the argument it's all purely contextual. I'm sure I've used both ways before, all that matters is that the person your talking to understands what your talking about. And the best way is to use those words Jack jokingly called "waste of words". I.e, this past Tuesday or as many of them agreed just saying Tuesday.

the problem was if they released it as something without the "xbox one" in front of the x and called it xbox elite or project scorpio people would continue with the shit they said last year saying its an entirely new gen system with its own exclusives. None of which is true. leaving the xbox one  on the front tells people its part of the xbox one family.

Also MS knows the S is going to sell more and they arent really marketing this to kids. Sure kids can play on it but its more for xbox fans who want that 4k/60 and a stronger faster box. Those fans are a bit older and can easily tell the difference and know what they want.

I don't really get what the "this" argument is about, there isn't a correct way to use it, "this" in the context they're referring to can both be an abbreviation for "this past" and "this coming". The correct usage is completely subjective based on what you and the people around you use it more often for.

I think it also depends on the verb tense that they use in the sentence. Since they use a past-tense verb, it implies that "this Tuesday" is really "this past Tuesday". That's how I interpreted it.

I actually disagree with both Ryan and Jack on the great This vs Last debate.

When talking about a previous day of the current week...

Here's why I think Ryan (last) is wrong: Normally, when discussing days of the week, you qualify them on a basis of weeks and not individual days (as in, there is one Wednesday in a week, so referring to a specific Wednesday is indirectly referring to it's specific corresponding week). The word "last" to me refers to the latest in a sequence of previous consecutive weeks (again, since days are qualified by their week), which does not include the current week. I would not consider "last" to be appropriate for talking about a day of the same week.

Here's why I think Jack (this) is wrong: "This" does not connote the past. Or the future, for that matter. If your goal is absolute grammatical clarity (and in casual conversation, context is usually enough to provide clarity, and grammar can take a backseat) "this" shouldn't be used on its own at all to refer to a day of the week. "This" in any other context would refer to a present, current condition (i.e "This table" is the table I'm looking at right now). That being said, if I only say "this Wednesday" I would typically be talking about the upcoming Wednesday of this week, but that's probably just a matter of personal preference, or the way you were raised hearing it. If I was looking to be grammatically concise, I would refer to a previous day of the same week as "this past x" and a future day of the same week as "this coming x". I would never talk about a previous day as simply "this".

All that said, however, I'm more inclined to agree with Ryan on this because Jack was a total asshole about it. I love Jack, don't get me wrong, but he took the whole discussion as a personal attack and turned it into a fight. Hopefully THIS is the LAST time we hear of this argument!
