This was such a great episode. This was very intense and deep. Mica has such great insight on all of this and it was interesting to hear. I want to write a eloquent comment but I'm still just so stunned. Also hearing the guys talk on it too was great to hear their input too. It was great to see Burnie in this.

Remember kids, you arent allowed to talk about anyone negatively on this site, if its not blind infatuation itll get downvoted to beyond. Critism isnt allowed on here, it just hurts everyones feelings.. :( (sarcasm)

Although I agree with Mika here, I hate how every time you try to constructively criticize her in comments, people attack you and say you're racist / sexist / whateverist.  I just don't think she's very funny..

God, see I've heard about the difference in Mica hate/love on YouTube versus here on the site but, I've never actually seen it in person... seeing people go "I love Mica! Mica is so important!!" is so... I mean it's heart warming and I agree but it's also like... what fucking dimension am I in?

I loved this episode! Very interesting, funny as usual. I think the few people complaining about the Mica conversation might need to take a chill pill and understand that sometimes the world is a serious place and people are aloud to talk about things that make them uncomfortable. She was going to pass up the subject because she is very aware that she might get some backlash (shocker she has) or even that she might bring the podcast down and Burnie put a stop to that and said no this is a place for these discussions so please continue. She said her piece, the boys treated her with nothing but respect, they listened to all of her thoughts and even asked her some questions because that is was Roosterteeth is! They have always praised there fans for being kind, thoughtful, and united. We should be treating her with the same respect as they are. You are not Mica, you do not live her life so you cannot disregard what she says as a "victim complex" or "social Justice antics". I think she's a lovely addition to the fam and if your this uncomfortable with a ten minute conversation maybe you need to look inwards and ask yourself why does this bother you so much?

i don't understand micas fear of being killed for being black in Texas when shes's more likely to be shot by minority than someone who is white. it's also stereotypical is say all people from the "deep south" with say something racist to you. The wage gap exists not because of racism and sexism but because of the choices you makes such as the hours you work, the field of study you go into, asking for a raise, negotiating you're starting salary, if you have decide to have a baby and have to take time off work to take care of the baby. These are some examples I thought of the top of my head. Women are more privileged than men. Women get less prison time than men for the same crime, men are more likely to be assaulted on the street than women, more men are raped (prison rape) than women, women are much more likely to win custody rights, more women are graduating from college.

First point: there is an element of truth to what you say on her being more likely to be killed by a minority, but if you look at the statistics, overall most people are most likely going to be murdered by their own race. And for her, it's not just the race thing, it's also the bisexual thing: http://www.avp.org/storage/documents/Reports/2014_HV_Report-Final.pdf

Second point: Here is a 2016 report on the pay gap: http://www.aauw.org/aauw_check/pdf_download/show_pdf.php?file=The-Simple-Truth

Must be hard for mica growing up with millionaire parents and only getting a job at roosterteeth because her famous dad. she only got introduced and invited to roosterteeth because they all knew he dad. try being a poor black man in the middle of texas with a upbringing with parents who could barely afford to feed there kids. Mica now by far my least favourite roosterteeth member for that reason.

Speaking of unfortunate pee stories, on my roommates 20th birthday he came back to the apartment after a night of heavy drinking. My laptop was sitting on a chair by the window, and he proceeded to piss all over it. Killing the laptop. Stopping me from delivering my presentation the next morning. Good times.

I need to put this out there. This is the first time I have walked into a conversation about race in the last year, and been totally behind the person speaking. My normal issues do not lie with the topic but the miss-use of the term cultural appropriation. Mica made my day when she started by saying that she didn't really like the term.

And now because I know I'm going to be miss-interpreted, the explanation:

I have a friend in college who is all for ending cultural appropriation. We have had several in-depth conversations about what it is and how to stop it. Initially I agreed whole-heartedly with her. It is bad to take and use another person's culture without their permission. However, as we talked more, I started to find problems with the enforcement of the idea and finally the idea itself.

First, The idea of permission. I was told that as a white person I would need permission from someone of that culture to participate. I was also told that if I went to another group with the same culture I should not expect the permission to be given, just because it had before. This was understandable and I was willing to ask permission. The issue came with the question. If I am practicing a culture with one group, like wearing cultural clothing, and we are walking down the street, and someone across the street from the same culture as the group I am with gets offended, which group should I respect? I found no one could answer this question intelligibly.

Second, As I thought about the idea of permission more, I came to another problem. What If a child was from a mixed race family or adopted? Would the adopted child have to get permission their whole life to participate in the culture they were born in? And would a mixed race child, say of a white and black couple, who came out looking Caucasian, be barred from practicing the culture of his or her black parent? My friend and some of her family thought so. She is one-fourth Japanese but she has been told that she does not "look" Japanese enough to wear a kimono. How much blood is needed to make a culture?

Finally, While having all of these conversations, I realized I had forgotten to ask one of the most important questions. While worrying about what I should not wear, support or do as a white woman, I realized that no one had ever addressed my "culture" more than to say it was "dominant." So, what is "white American "culture"? And why does it being dominant seem to imply that I have no exclusive rights to anything from it? I mean, why isn't there an uproar about people who are not part of white "culture" wearing Jeans (invented in the US during the gold rush) or eating fish and chips (British), or practicing the Christian religion? All of these things are arguably part of "white" culture and heritage? Why is permission only a one way thing?

Sorry, this got kind of long. Also if anyone has any answers to my questions I would love to hear them. I am seriously curious and still want to find a way to rationalize supporting the move against cultural appropriation.

    • Braxman FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

These are all very interesting questions. Unfortunately, there isn't really a clear answer. As far as I can tell, the closest thing to an "answer" would be to learn about whatever culture it is that you're "sampling" from. That way, you will at least avoid being insensitive and/or stereotypical.

Now, full disclosure: I am a white male. But, because my own experience cannot provide the answers for me, I have listened to a great many speakers, teachers, and friends on the matter. That is the best answer I have been able to form out of their compiled opinions.

Unfortunately, a great many cultures and ethnic groups go unrecognized, unappreciated, and taken advantage of by mainstream "white, middle class" culture. Until that changes, I really don't think there's much white people (or even those who appear white) can do to avoid pissing off other groups when we appear to be appropriating their culture. Now, thats not to say it doesn't matter. Obviously, those who come from the original culture should have the metaphorical "patent" on those cultural ideas. My main point here is that, until society changes, until the circumstances and opportunities surrounding all groups are equal, there WILL be tension.

I really think mica came in too early with the massive rant on feminism and racism. It's a little jarring going from talking about how Ryan was screaming at her in destiny to a long sit down with someone going through very serious stuff. This is a sort of introduction for her, and although I think it's great that she's a strong spirit and has these powerful beliefs and sticks by them, it seems a bit too early to completely bombard people with these heavy issues. When Burnie brings up a hard topic, like the death of someone or even the bombings, he doesn't keep going for too long on something that's supposed to be a light hearted discussion, and mica handy been here all that long. The most interesting people and characters don't reveal everything about their personality to you in a big info dump, they space it so that people don't feel overwhelmed. Although I agree with a lot of what she was saying, I think that it wasn't the best time and platform to big discussion about serious issues. I know more about her than I do Jeremy now, and I have grown to love Jeremy since he started working here.

    • sarahbellum

I don't really see why she has to further earn the right to talk about the stuff she cares about on the platform that already gave her a place by hiring her. I get what you're saying and where you're coming from, but Mica and Jeremy are different people. If she's more open about herself because she doesn't care about hiding it, then that shouldn't be a problem just because others are more reserved about themselves. I personally like a person who knows who they are and what they're about and doesn't mind dumping it all out. To me it shows the strength of their self awareness. That's different for everyone though.

Interesting how you COMPLETELY ignore the rest of then continuously egging her on. She actually tries to change the subject several times, and the rest of them ask questions or introduce new aspects that keep her on the same topic. What kind of content you want to keep watching is up to you, but please don't be so hypocritical as to whine about the subject matter of a conversation while, in the same rant, praising the person who originally brought up the subject to Mica on the first place.

Legitimately not trying to be rude, just trying to point out the glaring logistical fallacy in your argument.

I watched this on Youtube and it startled me seeing how many dislikes there were and how many awful comments there were that I saw. I hoped the RT community was better than that so I came here and was relieved to see people supporting Mica's rant. I agree with her 100% and am really glad that she was brave enough to speak up and talk about it in the podcast. I am probably even happier that everyone else on the podcast was supporting her and encouraging her and asking questions rather than basically just shitting on her for it. I'm one of those people who just don't care about race so I felt a little odd listening to Mica's part of the podcast where she went on what was a very eloquently worded discussion. I'm never had any anti racial thoughts, personally I could care less, which is good and bad. It's good because race doesn't bother me at all, but it's bad because where I don't care about people's race people think I don't care about ethnic struggles as well. I just wish we could get to the point where we can all just acknowledge we're all humans, that's all that matters to me at least. So to imitate Mica, "Fuck you people who don't few humans as humans".

Good Podcast, Mica is pretty awesome, like her being part of Achievement Hunter.

Just got to the part of Mica talking about issues with sexism and racism, and it made me think of something that happened to a friend of mine a while ago. He was driving down the road one day when for whatever reason he got pulled over by a cop. Whatever it was, it was a big enough deal that the cop requested, not stated, requested to come to the precinct with him. I should precis this by saying that Matt, my friend, is white. Matt was driving with his dog, so he assumed that it would have to be left behind. "Oh no." The cop said. "It can ride up front with me." As Matt tells it, this is the point where he becomes aware that he is getting treated this way because of the fact that he is white, and the situation would be completely different if he was not. From there, the cop takes him to the station and he usual stuff happens. When everything is sorted out Matt ends up with a fine (I don't recall the amount), and on his way out gets an offer from the cop to give him a ride to his car, which is a twenty minute drive! Matt said it was the most sickening display of white privilege he's ever seen. He tells it better than I, but hearing Mica talk on the issue made it come up in my head, so I thought I'd share.

Was hard to deal with the victim complex.

Black people do suffer due to the past and they are very much owed something.

Mica is not one of those black people and has been given ample opportunity as most people, if not more. Seeing herself as the victim I feel detracts from the true black victims.

    Just my two cents.

Never left a comment before on here. I'll say that I saw on the forum and on the comments for this video some negative things about how mica "hijacked the podcast to get on a sexist/racist soapbox" so when I watched the podcast I was waiting for the moment this happened.

    My reaction is this:

First she didn't hijack the podcast by any means.

Second what she was talking about is so true. This is what a podcast is about, tell stories and talk about issues.

Why is it okay for but is to talk about political things or financial things but not okay for Mica to discuss racism or sexism?

She talked about it from a very honest place and it was easy to connect with her. I would love to see more discussions about real issues on the podcasts these are all intelligent people with a younger audience that can learn from what they have lived through.

I totally experienced the, "You like this thing, i'm going to quiz you" I was in 2nd grade and on the weekends I would watch wrestling with my brothers and my dad, even my grandma still watches and loves wrestling. I remember a guy brought a wrestling kaleidoscope and he showed it to all his friends and i wanted to look at it and he was okay with with it but his friends was like , "No No, YOU don't like wrestling you're a fake fan!" he quiz me on everything about the characters and I answered all of them question correctly, he looked really impressed but he still wouldn't let me see it. The kid was nice enough to let me see it when his friend wasn't around.
