Flails did exist as weapons, they just weren't all that effective or widespread. The kind portrayed here were most likely used by an advancing line of troops, spun in a figure eight in front of them. They would impact the enemy, and probably switch with soldiers behind them who had shields and a better weapon for a melee, or would swap out their flail for a sword, axe, mace or warhammer.

Switching weapons on the fly was a lot more common in battle than most people may think. It's well documented that Roman soldiers and samurai would each carry 4 or 5 different weapons.

    • Triarch

Roman foot soldiers would have their gladius, shield, a knife, pilum javelins or plumbata darts, and maybe rarely one of their types of crossbows. They might also have a spare sword if they were high ranking.

The samurai had the classic set of katana and wakizashi, but going to war would have yumi bows and potentially field weapons like the nodachi or a polearm like the yari, naginata or nagamaki. In later eras they would also have matchlock muskets. Samurai did have retainers to transport their weapons for them however.

Archers and spearmen would have arming swords as backup weapons for if the enemy got too close and they needed to defend themselves.

While I love their commentary, there would be a lot less asking about the story if they didn't talk through every cutscene, like how they were helping Stone defend the castle from the vikings, or how Holden Cross was still largely in control of the castle and could have executed everyone, but chose to settle it one to one instead, and the knight Deubeny was too much of a punk bitch to fight him.

Really Ryan. You of all people calling a flail a mace? It bugged me way more than it should have. Also, while this game does look fun, and I have no doubt I'd enjoy it, I have to say the fact that at the end there, she pulled the dagger out of her gut where it had clearly stabbed into the armor, and yet there was no hole in the armor from the stab, bugged me a lot. It would be understandable if it was in normal gameplay, but this was a cutscene, and it just felt lazy to glance over such a detail when the combat is meant to be visceral.....

Ugh, Ryan mindlessly repeating urban legends and misconceptions about the Middle Ages. It's a well-known historical fact that Middle Age societies were significantly more advanced than the Roman Empire/antiquity in almost every facet of civilization, including the armor Ryan's character is wearing (which Romans would not know how to forge), and the castles in which he's fighting (which Romans would not know how to build). In fact, there was no such thing as the "Dark Ages", and much of the horrors of medieval life are attributed to the Black Death plague which devastated Western European populations in the late Middle Ages, rather than any real decline in technology or civilization.

The "civilization declined after antiquity" nonsense is one of the most obnoxious fallacies in the subject of European history, aqueducts or no aqueducts. Please stick to doing your video-game yuk-em-ups and keep your mouth shut about history/politics/science/anything that requires any amount of education and knowledge.

      from that same link:

"Despite being very common in fictional works such as cartoons, films and
role-playing games as the "quintessential medieval weapon," historical
information about this type of flail is somewhat scarce. A few doubt
they existed at all due to the number of pieces sitting in museums that
turned out to be forgeries, as well as the unrealistic way they are
      depicted in art."

Without actual physical evidence of this weapon or even written evidence, it's not a real weapon from that time. There is apparently evidence of a leather roped and non-spiked ball, presumed to be the precursor of what's in For Honour. But it's clear it was never popular and more of a toy.

Tungsten carbide while an incredibly hard material it's like diamond, it's hard but very brittle so if dropped or impacted it will shatter. I also believe they have tools in the E.R to remove carbide rings. It's essentially a little ring with a pointed screw in it and when you turn the screw and clamp down on the ring it's designed to shatter it  kinda like an emergency auto glass breaker.

Actually, Lions inhabited parts of Europe during the Holocene and even historic times and formed a subspecies called Panthera leo europaea. They were hunted to extinction in Greek and Roman times. So, even if people in medieval times had never seen a lion, they would probably would have known what they looked like do to art and literature.

    • Chewy77 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Chewy77

There is no evidence of the flails as seen in this game existing except as fanciful artwork. There's no evidence physical or written down in appropriate documents that this weapon existed. There is however evidence of a leather rope and smooth ball that is thought to have been a weapon and the precursor to the popular flail design. But they are so few in number that it's believed to be essentially a toy as it was too difficult to use.

  • DrakeSteel FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Flails weren't used as frequently from what I understand because of the nature of the weapon, it takes a lot of skill and mastery to properly use one with out hurting yourself and even then a standard mace or morning star will probably accomplish the same effect. Nanchaku were a farming tool that later found small use as weaponry similar to sai's

    • Jason_the_Cripple FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Flails were actually designed to combat armor.  You can't slash at someone wearing plate armor, so swords became less useful. Flails and maces when they strike plate armor would break bones, and deform the armor, sometimes even piercing it.

And the people who used the spears were usually lightly armored, trusting in the length of the spear to keep them out of range for major damage.

    • DrakeSteel FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

maces can break armor yes, but flails generally require momentum to do achieve a similar result. Yes flails can reach around a shield to strike someone but they also run the risk of injuring the user, and most of the time a knight would probably pick a more practical mace over a more ostentatious flail. Also knights used spears from horseback to siege enemy lines on the battlefield, they weren't always given to lightly armored pikers.

Based on wikipediea (and its subsequent sources) there is very little evidence of actual use of weapons like that, but of the evidence they have it shows that they were difficult to use and could cause damage to the wielder.

Chickens will look up during a rainstorm and drown. My family raises chickens and you have to put them in shelter during a storm or half of them die. So an ancient dodo doing it seems credible.

    • Jason_the_Cripple FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Not really.  The chicken is so stupid because we bred them that way.  Domesticated chickens would die without someone feeding them and giving them shelter.  Dodos didn't have people looking out for them.  If they were that stupid to drown when it rained, then they would have gone extinct a lot sooner than the 17th century.

    • Gamer3427 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold taC terceS

More than likely, what it amounts to is that over time urban legends about stupidity of one bird got crossed over to the other. People probably started thinking "dodos are basically a giant chicken, and they're extinct so they were probably even dumber". Truth be told, I've never heard the drowning thing being used in reference to dodos before, but I have heard it in reference to turkeys.....

@Lukke123 That's because they don't have subtitles on, skip cutcenes and segments of gameplay, talk over the dialog, and Ryan is just kind of flailing about, (and not remembering that it's a flail, not a mace), instead of using the combo system or attacking tactically. He even looked at and commented on the giant spikes, then didn't think to try and knock enemies into them when he fought three guys right beside some a few moments later. I mean, I love Ryan, but he's kind of playing it as more of a button masher. Definitely think if they keep going he needs to turn the difficultly up so he can't do that quite as easily.....
