    history of lawn jockey

Some accounts of the figure's origin, however, cause some to see the statue as representing a hero of African American history and culture. According to the River Road African American Museum the figure originated in commemoration of heroic dedication to duty: "It is said that the 'lawn jockey' has its roots in the tale of one Jocko Graves, an African-American youth who served with General George Washington at the time that he crossed the Delaware to carry out his surprise attack on Hessian forces at Trenton, NJ. The General thought him too young to take along on such a dangerous attack, so left him on the Pennsylvania side to tend to the horses and to keep a light on the bank for their return. So the story goes, the boy, faithful to his post and his orders, froze to death on the river bank during the night, the lantern still in his hand. The General was so much moved by the boy's devotion to his duty that he had a statue sculpted and cast of him, holding the lantern, and had it installed at his Mount Vernon estate. He called the sculpture 'The Faithful Groomsman'." The most frequently cited source for the story is Kenneth W. Goings in Mammy and Uncle Mose (Indiana University Press, 1994), though he regards it as apocryphal. The story was told as well in a 32-page children's book by Earl Kroger Sr., Jocko: A Legend of the American Revolution (1963). Moreover, there is a 13-page typescript titled "A Horse for the General: The Story of Jocko Graves" (1972), by Thomas William Halligan, in the archives of the University of Alaska Anchorage / Alaska Pacific University Consortium Library.[2]

Charles L. Blockson, Curator Emeritus of the Afro-American Collection at Temple University in Philadelphia and author of Hippocrene Guide to the Underground Railroad, claims that the figures were used in the days of the Underground Railroad to guide escaping slaves to freedom: "Green ribbons were tied to the arms of the statue to indicate safety; red ribbons meant to keep going ... People who don’t know the history of the jockey have feelings of humiliation and anger when they see the statue ..."[3] Blockson has installed an example of the statue at the entrance to the University's Sullivan Hall. Patterns of and markings on the clothing of the statues also are said to have indicated messages understood by fleeing slaves.

Blockson's claim to the contemporary use of color in signalling is substantiated by the Congressional 1848 act [4] which resulted in standardizing red and green colors for channel marker buoys.

The Revolutionary War legend is not corroborated by historical records. Mount Vernon's librarian Ellen McCallister Clark wrote in a letter to Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library: "No record of anybody by the name of Jocko Graves, nor any account of somebody freezing to death holding Washington's horses, exists in the extensive historical record of the time."

Take a drink for every death, according to the spread sheet they have died 20,913 times, i highly suggest you don't do that, if you drank every 100 deaths you'd drink 209 times, every 1000 would still put you at 20 times. I agree with Ryan on GoT. I'm all for character death, but I hate when authors introduce characters quickly and take shortcuts to force the reader to care, only to yank the newbie away. It feels clumsy and manipulative, and makes the reader cynical. The audience is much less likely to care about ANY character when the author is obvious about pushing emotions around for cheap drama. You need give the audience both reason and time to connect in order to make the loss truly devastating.

As the biggest ASOIAF fan I know, I find it really interesting to hear the opinions of both show watchers and people that really aren't too big of a fan of it all together. I just wanna talk about some of the stuff I heard so ASOIAF/GOT spoilers ahead:

The first thing was when Jack mentioned that having George R.R. Martin out will result in a happy ending. It's worth noting that the show writers are truthfully much more brutal and death-crazy than Martin. The show has the majority of the deaths in the book and more (people alive in the books: Shireen, probably Jojen, Gren, Pyp, Pyat Pree, Mance Rayder, Barristan Selmy, Catelyn Stark as Lady Stoneheart, etc).  Also, I'm not entirely certain because I'm not super focused on the show, but I believe that ASOIAF and GOT will end in relatively the same place. Then again, the book has a shit ton more characters so its hard to compare.

Also, quick thing about the Night King. Interestingly enough, the Night King is literally not in the books at all (though maybe he'll enter in the future). There is a historical figure named the Night's King - a Lord Commander of the Night's Watch during the Age of Heroes who basically started fucking some woman whose description sounds like that of a white walker (she's called the corpse queen). He essentially went crazy and there was some dark shit in the Night's Watch until Brandon the Breaker and Joramun stopped him. There is currently no clear direct connection between the two characters; however, it would seem crazy that two unrelated characters would have such similar names.

Next, Ryan talked about how characters were introduced and killed off when you were just starting to care. I completely agree, but I think that ASOIAF does something really amazing with it all. I t s   a l l   c o n n e c t e d . A character might seem small and out of nowhere only to be killed off, but nearly every single character has an insane amount of detail and connection to the story. It's really hard to see, I've read all the main books over ten times, Dunk and Egg thrice, World of Ice and Fire probably around twenty times, you get the point. But I still barely see half the information. Small details can tell a lot, a lot of these details are introduced through meeting new people. I frankly think it's a more realistic version of high fantasy.

Also, there are still commonfolk around producing food and whatnot. Of course there are regions where food is much more scarce now through either natural causes (the Dothraki Sea is essentially dead) or war causes (all the parts of Westeros now produce a shit ton less food). This is touched on in the book, and starvation actually plays a part, but it's certainly not center stage. All in all, Martin isn't actually avoiding from touching on food scarcity, he's just putting it on a lesser tier. ASOIAF and GOT follow basically all noblefolk. They don't have a food problem. We see through their eyes, so we hardly see a food problem.

I totally get the annoyance for splitting the books into two parts; however, I do think he did the right thing. Again, ASOIAF is incredibly detailed, if the books were published combined, they would have been published later all together as well as being an insane 2000+ page novel. This isn't the only time he's done this as well. Fire and Blood, one of his upcoming anthologies on the Targaryens is being split into multiple parts. I do understand the annoyance, especially if you had to wait. Take this with a grain of salt because I started reading the books as the most recently published one came out.

As I've previously mentioned, there are actually a couple anthologies out already. The major one being a World of Ice and Fire. It's essentially a giant book written by Maester Yandel detailing the history known to the citadel (at least the history they would release).

I'd write more but this is way too long already. Once I get started on ASOIAF/GOT it can be hard to stop. I really love hearing these other opinions on the matter and the writing.

Actually the food situation IS brought up in the books, multiple times.

-In the North, the lords are told to put a certain portion of their harvest aside for winter.

-As Lord Commander, one of the issues Jon had to tackle when bringing the wildlings through the wall was the ability to feed them, as well as the Night's Watch, through the winter. He ends up making a deal with the Iron Bank.

-During the War, the Tyrells withheld food from King's Landing, causing a massive food shortage and issues for Tyrion. Remember the riot? And of course, once the Tyrells joined the Lannisters, they gave all the food back, gaining the love of the people of King's Landing (never mind that it was the Tyrells that caused the famine in the first place).

-Ryan mentioned how all the smallfolk are dead due to the war, but the war only ravaged the Riverlands. And the effects of that is seen throughout the story (it's where the Sparrows came from!). But the Reach remained untouched. And the Reach is one of the largest sources of food.

-And then there's a certain Littlefinger that is perfectly aware of the food shortage that is coming and is buying all the grain to make a profit.

@Golladan I know that it was brought up in the books on multiple occasions - I don't think the fact of it being in the books was in question at all. I'm discussing how the point of view of the story makes it so the famine seems decreased. Again, all of what you are saying is true; I've made it clear that I've read the books multiple times. That's just irrelevent to the point I was making.

Why do they censor content on a website that they own? This is not youtube. That being said, I'm sure its more comedic, than whatever homophobic/racist-esk joke was made as a joke of itself.

In this instance Ryan probably said something to the effect of "Hey editor, bleep this whole sentence because it'll be funny". They've done that joke during On the Spot in the past and I'm sure some of the bleeped stuff from let's plays have been that. As to why they'd do it on their own site when it's not a joke, it's their site. They, as in the person that makes the joke on some occasions, decides that they don't want to go up.

It doesnt matter if someone is popular, they still do this for a living after all, and are subject to company rules. Also, these videos do end up on Youtube, and it would be extra work for the editor to edit two versions of the same episode.

They will never complete the last 2 levels. They are insanely harder than anything before. We're talking only around 2 dozen people in the world have done it. It takes many hours of memorization to get there, which is something they can not put into this game. ( It would need to be essentially all at once. As someone who recently rewatched all of Game of Thrones, and who intends to watch the final season when it comes out, I have to say that it's honestly not that great of a show. It does have some good moments, but they're overshadowed by just how much content could easily be cut without any real loss to the over all plot. There's also entire chunks of the story that are just painful to have to sit through because nothing is happening, or they're just reiterating things that we've already been told and shown a half dozen times. What's made even worse is that some episodes end in a cliffhanger, then you don't get the resolution to said cliffhanger until near the end of the next episode, after making you sit through forty minutes of nothing important happening. Over all, I do enjoy the show, but at the same time I can't really recommend it to anyone.......

Gamer3427, I personally have never seen the show until I watched the very last episode released with some friends who are mega fans. Literally half the show was people walking down a street and talking. I guess I can understand the appeal(and I am sure I am missing out on some good TV) but I will never make myself sit through probably 100 plus hours of that.

lol GoT. I read about 5% of the first book, which was about enough to encounter incest, arseholes pushing a kid off the balcony for well, snooping around like a kid, and then some shit about Danaerys or whoever being married off. It was incredibly weird, then horrifically callous then incredibly banal. Not great. Between that and what I've heard about the TV series, I think it might just hold up well as an exemplar of extreme fetish fiction that weirdly enough has gotten past peoples' shame filters in a way that 50 shades of grey still hasn't managed.

Yup. Only about 13 people have done it on the xbox version and another 3 on Play Station, at least that's all that's tracked on Trueachievements and Truetrophies.

1.) This was made nearly 3 months ago. If you're that far behind, you really need to get caught up on the show.

2.) They put "Game Of Thrones spoilers until the end of the video" in large, bold font on the screen at 26:27 that you should know what's about to come. Plus, it also says "They also spoil Game of Thrones. Sorry" in the description.

Your stupidity and unreasonable request infuriate me. If your circumstances have prevented you from catching up then that's something you just have to suck up and deal with. By your sponsor/first status I assume you make money and are a grown-ass adult. Grow up.

I think they said it had to do with looking at blood through a microscope to study it or something. Also the part about the ceiling I think they said was a Dexter reference.

samples of blood are put on a glass slide then a smaller thinner usually glass piece is put on top so you can look through it with a microscope to view the components in the blood.  i've never looked at blood slides but i did look at a lot of plant slides and animal tissue slides in biology.

Yeah, Ryan and myself and the users above all are thinking of the same thing, but I think the others are thinking of something else, but I have no clue as to what.

Just because I don't think they explained full: in the show Dexter, the titular character is a serial killer who takes a drop of blood on a microscope slide as a trophy of each kill, which he then stores in a box above his ceiling.

Because, you know, Ryan is serial killer.
