Well, now that I know they're most likely 4-5 episodes ahead, giving advice feels sort of pointless.

Still, Cobblestone blocks are made by upgrading Flagstone blocks, which you can build in your inventory, no filling necessary.

While an iron fireaxe is nice, it's really not worth your time to make one until you can make at least 100 quality tools: the increase in durability over the stone axe doesn't really make up for the resource cost and craft time when you can only do 50 quality.

Wood spikes do more damage than wood log spikes, but the fact that you can upgrade log spikes for even better durability can make them preferable.

It's very entertaining just watching them not fully understanding the game.  I think you can make paint with a beaker in the campfire.  When Gavin learns that he can select the different style paints, the whole area is going to be covered.  Wait until he learns that you need to be level 60 before you can make a chemistry station.  Michael should lookup how to make a draw bridge.

    Gavin,

A majority of the paints today are made with a combination titanium dioxide(TiO2), resins, and other solids in varying percentages depending on the quality of the overall product as well as how light or dark a color you desire. The darker the color you want, less TiO2 will be present, and you will also get less coverage out of the paint itself. The colorants added to the paint is made of naturally occuring pigments and provide the tint for the paint. That being said, yellows and reds are notorious for needing multiple coats, so the fact that you got the room painted with one coat on the wall is nothing short of a miracle!

If you hold down 'r' while holding a paint brush, you can change the colour. All the paint looks red but what is actually put on the wall depends on the brush. You can also reads book to learn different kinds of painting textures. As for making paint, you're lacking a chemistry station but if you find a trader, there is usually one in his base that you can use.

You guys should definitely take advantage of the farms you found! I couldn't tell if the soil was any good, but if not it's easy enough to replace them with (I think) sod, which will give you 2 plants for every 1 seed, as opposed to the 1:1 you'll get with regular dirt. It'll definitely help solve your food problem!

Also you should totally have a beach episode and go cliff diving into the lake once you're pretty stable!

    • dostatochno FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I like the beach episode idea.  I can see that playing out in several different ways :-)

As for sod, it's no good for farming (it acts like any other untilled "ground" block). To farm, you need to make a hoe and till any ground (or sod) blocks you want to plant on. That gives (for most seeds) a yield of 2 for every seed.  If you can make/find fertilizer, that's even better with a yield of 4 for every seed (more for a couple plants).  Fertilizer can even be applied to the ground under an existing ripe plant and the yield on that plant will go up immediately.

The main reasons for sod to exist are that you can pick it back up for a little while if you're trying to get your landscaping right, it offers another texture which may be aesthetically useful, and it won't grow grass (although normal grassy, forest or plains ground blocks won't re-grow grass so you can just "mow" whatever area you want tidied).  Zombies may not be able to spawn on it either, but you'd have to sod a massive area for that to be especially useful.

When will the boys learn that you NEVER challenge a Brit on idioms.

We invented the 'turning of a phrase' and the insertion of popular culture into language in the form of idioms and colloquialisms.

Google 'idioms from Shakespeare' and you will see that he basically reinvented conversational English.

It can be remarkably difficult to take down a building completely even though it can be quite challenging to put a building up in the first place.  On the technical side, I think there are 2 reasons. 1) The game can't spend all its time calculating stability, so it mostly does that when a player places or removes a block and stops the calculation after a certain point (it's actually possible to get past the game's stability rules slightly but only with very large structures). The stability rules are very cut and dry on the small scale (weight vs. stability value of supported block faces) but there may also be some tweaks in the calculation to support bigger ceilings/roofs, that sort of thing.  2) From a gameplay design perspective, the challenge of getting something up in the first place is interesting but you have to have a compromise between that and the frustration factor if what's been built is too fragile.  I'd like to see a corner of the house collapse, or something like that, but I think it's unlikely unless they undermine all the wall blocks.  Also, I fear anything that might make them rage quit.   It's a great game with a lot to do and explore and interesting mods to get into later if they're casting about for something new to do (Starvation SDX is almost as big a change as Sky Factory is to Minecraft).

i just can't.. it hurts to watch this.. Michael trying to build like he's in minecraft, it’s so slow and painful to watch, looking up trying to stack from ground level, just nerd poll up to build pillars/walls in 2 seconds or build a temp scaffolding from the ground level out of frames (also use them to measure your  build) 25 min in and he still hasn't built a 3 block bridge... And why on earth are they still all using stone tools? it makes them do everything 400x slower. By day 7, especially with a group, they should all have at least iron tools.. gav still can’t read. @Gavino with the paintbrush in hand HOLD “”R”” and why can’t they finish their damn beginner quests!! how many episodes until they figure out the wipe their own ass basics? also none of them seem to read the patch notes or even watched a video on what's changed in 16, i.e. jack talking about cobblestone frames.. also 'yay more 7 days!!' heh

i now know they just refuse to read.. funniest part @Michael chopping wood frames while the game literally is telling him at his cursor "press E to pick up!"

Well, this was recorded about 14 years ago, so who knows if any of this is useful anymore.

Dropping things -- Alpha 16 changed the default key for "drop" because one of the devs dropped his bow on a horde night by accident.

The new default key for "drop" is "G".  Alternatively, while holding a stack with the mouse, you can now right-click to the side of the inventory pane to drop single items from the stack.

Cobblestone blocks -- first you make flagstone blocks and then upgrade them with cobblestone rocks in your inventory.  I believe flagstone blocks are also crafted with cobblestone rocks.  I can't remember if those blocks are repaired with cobblestone rocks or with stone and clay separately, but my guess would be cobblestone rocks.

How far out you can build -- it depends on the block types and where the actual support is.  Each block type has a specified weight and stability glue value (how much weight a side face of that block can support). EDIT: As of Alpha 16.3, *supported* wood blocks can support about 6 wood blocks per face, stone-type blocks (brick/flagstone/cobble/any concrete) can support about 11 like blocks per face and metal (scrap, steel, metal-reinforced wood)  can support about 15 like blocks per face. (A block is only truly fully "supported" if it has blocks underneath it all the way down to bedrock)

Currently, wood blocks weigh 6, stone-type blocks 10, metal blocks 20, so a supported wood block's face can only support 1 metal block per face or 3 stone-type blocks, but a supported metal block can support upwards of 50 wood blocks per face, so long as no side faces of those wood blocks are over-loaded..

Paint -- You craft paint in the chemistry station. I'm pretty sure you don't need to acquire a recipe for paint, but you need to unlock the Chemistry Station before you can craft one.  To unlock that, you need to reach level 60 and raise your Science skill to 7 and tool smithing to 3 with skill points and then buy the chemistry station perk.  The MUCH easier/faster option is to find a working chemistry station in the back of a drug store or strip club or several other POIs, place a land-claim block and hold 'E' on the chemistry station and mouse to the Hand icon to take it.  This is how you take all work stations in Alpha 16 multiplayer.  (EDIT: Traders sometimes have functioning chem stations.  You can't take theirs, but you can use them if they're operational).

Also Paint -- While holding a paintbrush, you hold 'R' (or maybe 'E') to get the paint color/pattern selection interface.  There are also options to change how paint is applied (to a large area, to all faces of a block, etc).

    EDIT: 2 amendments:

Food -- Bacon & Eggs (16 fullness/1.35 wellness) are not necessarily as good as 1 charred meat and 2 boiled eggs at this point (18 fullness/1.29 wellness, total). If you consider using the eggs in blueberry pie instead, the two eggs are worth an additional 0.16 wellness for a total of 18/1.45 (30/2.25 if you include the whole pies, not just the eggs' contribution).  The optimal foods are currently charred meat, blueberry pie and, lacking eggs and blueberries, cornbread.  Baked potatoes and mushrooms are better used alone for fullness since the overall fullness for vegetable or meat stews are less than you get with cornbread or cornbread and charred meat respectively. Meat stew does have an edge on wellness if the corn isn't costing you blueberry pie, so if hunger and meat scarcity are no longer a problem, go ahead and make meat stew (Meat stew has a benefit of 14% wellness at a cost of 37% of the fullness that could otherwise be provided by the ingredients). Vegetable stew is always a waste.

Although charred meat lowers hydration, this is a positive because that lets you drink more tea, which also improves wellness.  Side note: Make a hoe, till a plot of land, grow crops, including corn, blueberry, aloe, cotton, chrysanthemum and goldenrod (yucca can be good since you don't have to fetch and boil water to drink it.  Potatoes and mushrooms are mostly for completionists.  Coffee is a decent stamina-aid until you can make beer).  Make red tea and goldenrod tea and drink those as much as you can.

Also, buy the beer book and a hop seed from a trader.  You'll want fertilizer, especially for the hop seeds since 1 beer takes 4 hops and unfertilized soil only nets 1 hop per plant per  harvest..  The Chemistry Station is needed for beer-making, so that's additional motivation to help Gavin in his quest for paint.

Infinite water -- A 1-block well will fill a bucket twice but can be completely filled by a single bucket.  This means that with two 1-block wells, you can effectively have infinite water.   If you empty a block with a bucket, refill that block and take the bucket again.  If you empty the 1st block with a stack of jars, use a bucket to draw from the 2nd block and refill the 1st, then empty the the 2nd block with with bucket and refill it.  Life gets much more complicated if the water blocks are connected to one-another, so don't.  Also, water is only properly contained by cubic, opaque, solid blocks.  A container made of glass blocks, ramps, haybales, ground blocks, etc. will "leak" unless the container is 2 blocks thick.
