I wouldn't even say this game was scary as much as it was stressful. Outlast was scary - you always had the very real possibility of being grabbed, and like Michael stated, hiding places weren't scripted - you genuinely had to hide and get away. You wanted to survive! In Outlast 2, there is no will to survive, and nothing ever feels threatening because it just kills you right away so you give up the second you're seen. Outlast felt like real survival horror, where you weren't a fighter because you had no chance against what you were fighting. In Outlast 2, Blake just seems like an idiot for not punching other human beings in the face (in Outlast, Chris Walker and Dr. Traeger are 2 guys I would not fight in a bar, nor the Walrider). The story was just confusing and it felt like the creators made it intentionally vague and blurry to do the Jaws thing, where the monster is scarier when you can't see it and you have to imagine it on your own, but the truth is in Outlast 2 there weren't enough details to make a monster in your own head - everything just felt weirdly out of touch.

Definitely not your fault for not understanding the story. It was way too convoluted. The transitions between the present time and his flashbacks needed to be better timed. The characters had very little time to develop and it was hard to sympathize or relate to any of them. The only characters I felt remotely sorry for was Jessica, Lynn and the guy that helps you and get killed by the dick bitch. Other than that I didn't really care. The reason it was so hard to get behind Blake was because he was simply as a crazy fucking character rather than a unfortunate character that suffered from something very traumatic in his childhood and had those fears and traumas exposed due to the experiments Murkoff was doing in the mountains nearby. They honestly had a really good story there but it was executed so poorly. That ONE piece of paper that hints at the connection is so out of the way you wouldn't be able to find unless you happen onto it OR you know you're looking for it after the fact. The connection could've easily been set up with context clues from going up to the towers OR stumbling upon some type of nearby base camp. It's just so disappointing. Outlast and Whistleblower were so good so to go from those two well done games to this is just frustrating.

    • GabeHaskins

Not to mention, you had to have specifically played Whistleblower to know what was happening in this game. This game is based on ONE NOTE from that DLC, one that states that "Women exposed to the Morphogenic Engine often develop psychosomatic pregnancies, leading to miscarriage and death."

    • BardicBrad FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

yeah I don't think they actually missed a lot of things. The game just doesn't connect the plot points very well. You can play the whole game and not realize that there are three different groups in the town of Temple Gate, because they all just kind of blend together because none of them show any semblance of sanity. The Cultists, The Heretics and The Scalled are all different groups that all have different ideas about what is going on and none of them present as sane.

The only connection I'm surprised they didn't make was that Knoth raped and impregnated Jane Doe, who was Ethan's daughter, Anna Lee.

Also still confused about the morphogenic psychosomatic pregnancy nonsense from whistleblower. If it's psychosomatic then there isn't actually a child present. Which means the ending is entirely imagined...??

    • GabeHaskins

@BardicBrad Yes, the apocalypse at end WAS entirely imagined. Everyone ended up killing themselves because they believed Lynn's "baby" is the Antichrist.

I still say dying from an imaginary pregnancy is stupid. Who could convince themselves they went from 0 to 100% pregnant in one night?

    • GabeHaskins

      Ok, let me explain.

In the Whistleblower DLC for Outlast 1, there was a note that specifically cited the distinction of gender in the Morphogenic Engine. (The Walrider Machine) "Women, when exposed to the Morphogenic Engine, often develop false pregnancies where all symptoms are felt, but no physical evidence of such is shown. These often ended in miscarriage and death." It's not imaginary, it's psychosomatic. Those white flashes throughout the game were the Murkoff Corporation trying to expose a mass of people, the community of Temple Gate, to the Engine.

Team Nice Dynamite turns garbage into gold once more. OK, "garbage" feels a little harsh to me, but man, what an unsatisfying story. I appreciate notes/documents/videos/terminals that enhance a game's story, but having to rely on them to know what is going on is toss.

Plus! From what I've read, there were only one or two documents that actually related to what was really going on, one of which they didn't happen to find. The accounts of the awful things happening were somewhat interesting to read, but all the psychos spouting psycho talk through the lens of (severely contorted) religious beliefs/terminology didn't add much to the game.

    Ennit.

Anyway, Michael and Gavin made it fun to watch, with jump scares (Gavin falling backwards in his chair was super funny) expletives, exclamations and other entertaining commentary. I also enjoyed Andy's additions, including the occasional close-ups of the webcam.

As for the end of the video, unexpected-Elyse was really really great.

@3rdJohn As much as I like to hate on Destiny for its lack of in game story, I have to say that the major difference here is that this game was story focused, at least in theory. In destiny, the driving plot is that you're killing things in space, and that's all you really need to know, (even if I do think a story would have improved the game as a whole significantly). With this game though, it presents a story as the focus for everything, but then only gives you the plot summary unless you grab and read every collectible.....

Not to mention that at least Destiny had good gameplay and graphics. This game had pretty bland and annoying gameplay, and while it had good graphics, you couldn't see them most of the time without applying a green filter, and could barely see them then......

I mean Micheal does have a point. alot of the game was scary but most of time you didn't really get the point of whats happening. like, even hearing that there's a tower making people crazy doesn't explain much. why the tower? how does the women get pregnant so fast? devil baby, what?

like Outlast 1 felt like more of a completed story that was added to with whistleblower. this seems like they almost held back in the main game for content in the (allegedly) coming DLC.

    • GabeHaskins

Ok let me explain what happened.

Why are there those weird towers?
Murkoff is a bad corporation that specializes in toying with human psyche. They made the Morphogenic Engine in the first game AKA The Walrider. In order to use it, one had to be in a very unstable state of mind to control it aptly. Those microwave towers with the blinding white light and a horrible case of widespread neurosyphilis are a sort of way to administer that craziness to a populous, in this case, the town of Temple Gate. They were trying to expose people to the Morphogenic Engine to make people crazy enough to be able to use it.

How did Lynn become pregnant so quickly?

In the Outlast 1 Whistleblower DLC, there was a note that stated "Women exposed to the Morphogenic Engine often experience psychosomatic pregnancies (so they believe themselves to experience all the symptoms of it, but there is no physical evidence of it) which often lead to miscarriage and death. At the end of Outlast 2 Lynn was never pregnant, everyone was just crazy due to those lights and believed there to be a baby. That's why Lynn's last words were "there's nothing there..." referencing the fact that there is no child.

      Devil Baby?

Yeah, devil baby. Just kidding. Papa Knoth was originally a pastor, but he became so devout that he cut out his own eye and moved to Temple Gate. Then, Murkoff decided to try and make everyone there loony, so his religiosity became very exaggerated. Everyone there followed him, and his extreme religious beliefs ward against the birth of the Antichrist. In order to prevent the birth of the devil, he has killed every child conceived in his town, adopting the ultimate form of "better safe than sorry." So, when Lynn "birthed a child", this was the first in a long time, leading all to believe it was the Antichrist. That's why the events at the end of the game resemble the apocalypse: everyone is having a simultaneous hallucination that the world is ending. Again the kid isn't real, but everyone is insane to the point where they think it is.

      What was that ending?

Everyone killed themselves, so Murkoff decided to blow it all up to remove all evidence that this illegal experiment happened.

    • Gamer3427 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold taC terceS

@GabeHaskins Thanks for explaining, though it does raise one question. Who the hell on the dev team thought it was a good idea to make the story so well hidden that most people wouldn't have any clue what was going on even after beating the game, including to the point that perhaps the biggest plot point is explained by a single note from the DLC of the first game, which unless you read all the side stuff, you had no indication was even related to this game aside from the title? Maybe they're the actual insane ones here.....

    • GabeHaskins

      @reasontofreak

She was somewhat relevant. That whole "B" story was meant to be an analysis of Blake's motivation to follow through with finding his wife, having the child, etc. Throughout the game, Blake begins to reference his past when commenting on recorded video, often having to remind himself that he saving Lynn, not Jessica. In the past, Jess liked Blake, but Blake and Lynn liked each other. She got caught and beaten unconscious by Loutermilch. Blake was strong-armed into not telling anyone what happened. After being abandoned physically and emotionally by Blake, Jess hanged herself. ("I'll never let you go" being repeated throughout) Because she killed herself, Blake feels personally responsible, and holds that guilt until the events of the game. Blake, in this game, has many chances to leave, but he doesn't because he feels that saving the baby is his personal equivalent to saving Jessica. For example, when you record a dead Papa Knoth, Blake says "You were a child, nobody could expect anything of you. None of this is my fault."

Basically, the motivation for Blake begins with his quest by trying to save Lynn, but it becomes a personal quest to absolve himself of the guilt from Jessica's suicide.

    • GabeHaskins

@Gamer3427 I don't know, maybe they were the interns at Red Barrels, who read one note in Outlast and decided to make an entire game based on it?

Also, you didn't HAVE to read all the side shit, mostly the "Gospel of Knoth" for their backstory (which isn't too important) but most importantly, two specific notes: One from an explorative member of Temple Gate, and one from a Murkoff employee. The first describes hidden towers that are poorly camouflaged, which caused a very convincing hallucination of "something sexual and disturbing," and he wound up far away and lost. (sound familiar?) I believe Michael picked that one up in this play-through. The second is a note that was very hidden, like ACROSS A RIVER ON A SMALL PIECE OF LAND YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO GO TO. It describes how the effects of the radio towers anomalously grows stronger the farther away one is, having an exponentially bigger effect on all living things around Temple Gate. It also specifically mentions "Jenny Roland," lead psychoanalyst for Murkoff from the first game.

    • Gamer3427 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold taC terceS

@GabeHaskins In all honesty, the fact that it's relegated to exactly two notes, one of which is apparently extremely well hidden, makes it that much worse. I can get behind games expanding on the story in optional content, but not when a game makes that optional content very minuscule and very well hidden, and absolutely necessary to understand what's actually going on. It's alright to have things change up what you think you know based on what you find in side content, but having a story make little to no sense and have no explanation, without said hidden notes, is really bad storytelling in most cases. It can work in a game with very little story that drives you forward, but in a game that is story driven, as this one is, it's really bad......

How else are they going to milk DLC?

    • GabeHaskins

      I'll explain:

"Who the fuck were any of the characters?"

A reporter and her cuck husband.

"What was the deal with the baby?"

It was thought to be the antichrist (caused the apocalypse), but everyone was also crazy from those white lights throughout the whole game, including Blake. The baby wasn't real.

      "Why was Lynn pregnant?"

She wasn't. In the Whistleblower DLC, a piece of paper described females being exposed to the Morphogenic Engine. (The Walrider) On the piece of paper, it described women that when exposed, experienced psychosomatic pregnancies with no real child, often leading to miscarriage and death, sound familiar?

"Why did we keep going back to that Catholic school?"

That's the school from our past, 4th grade. The blinding white light throughout the game made us slowly go crazy, making us transfer back and forth between that repressed memory and the real world.

      "Where was the setting?"

      Temple Gate, Arizona.

"What happened to the cultist freaks who wanted the baby to be born?"

They died, along with everyone. Again, those white lights made everyone crazy, right? Those lights were presumably placed by the Murkoff Corporation, the same guys from the first Outlast, as an experiment on human psyche(that's what they do). All of the Christians in the game slaughtered each other because the thought the apocalypse was happening, and at the end, an explosion happened. Murkoff set off a bomb to get rid of the evidence of this VERY ILLEGAL experiment.
