Let's Watch: Let's Watch - Until Dawn: Rush of Blood VR

You'd think Mad King Ryan would find a place called the mad house to be super welcoming. Nope! This place is trying to kill him. He has to escape as best as he can - which isn't super easy when everything's on rails.

This is the best they can come up with for VR?

Yeesh, at this rate I'll have to revise my "death of VR" predictions. If they can't do any better than this VR will basically be dead by the time Scorpio launches... if not sooner.

Okay so I'm going to compile some thoughts on this, because a few interesting things I noticed both in-game and in the comments section.

First of all, early on I thought "This is probably like Josh's decent into madness" and when I looked at the wiki for the game a little while later, turned out I was exactly right. I hadn't seen much talk on the game, especially no comments on story by devs, but according to the wiki "According to the developers, the ride is “a descent into madness” taking place in the mind of one of the original characters. This is most likely referring to Josh" so I fucking called it. And this also makes everything that we've seen in the game make sense, with ghosts and clowns, but no wendigos. Josh didn't know about them, so why would they be in his descent to madness in the year between his sisters' death and the main events of the game? Also, if you look at the player body and arms, it's the same Psycho outfit Josh wore in until Dawn, and the Psycho we've seen multiple times in Rush of Blood.

Second, from the moment this game was first announced it was obvious it wouldn't be anything like the main game. It's an on-rails shooter for shits sake, and we knew that from day 1. If you expected it to be anything else, congrats, you might be delusional. I suspect what happened was Until Dawn was a major success, and so Sony decided "Hey let's see if these guys want to make a thing for our upcoming VR platform" so they did. But with VR being so new there is very little in what can be done right now, and an on-rails shooter is incredibly viable, especially for a sit down VR headset. Basically: Until Dawn is recognizable name for Play Station, and if Supermassive made a VR game set in that world, people would buy it. It's more or less a tech demo or even experience game, much like most VR games out there right now.

Third, I have not personally used PSVR, so this section will be based off observation and other reviews. From what I understand, the motion controls are janky, and Sony really needs to update that hardware. However, I think another problem lies in Ryan's chair. Because he pushed himself back so often without realizing it, he inadvertently changed his position in relation to the camera, messing up the sensors and so fucking with location and tracking. So it might be a combination of both the hardware itself and Ryan moving around, but without testing the game with a stable chair the exact degree that each affects the problem is unknown.

Finally, holy shit that was funny as hell. I say keep playing, I want to see what all happens in the game. And I also want to see Ryan freaking out more  it never gets old.

Sorry for this being so long I have a bunch of thoughts.

The thing with the chair is probably correct, but that speaks to the problems involved with using camera-based VR. Vive has nailed it with infrared tracking, I've had very few problems with it.

This, however, seems to basically be Kinect with a screen strapped to your face, and a couple extra buttons.

Which works, don't get me wrong. I just don't see it being worth the money. The Vive is a wholly different experience from regular video games, whereas this seems like an extension. Not my cup of tea.

I'm really surprised that they had a game where you fought wendingos but they didn't include that in here. But maybe they're in the later sections? The game wasn't that fun to watch, what it needed was a few more jump scares. The commentary was great though, especially Ryan flailing around.

The single redeeming aspect of this game--beyond watching the crew play it, of course--is that they got Larry Fessenden (The Plot Exposition Device/Flamethrower Man from Until Dawn that lost his head) back to play as the Carnie in this one. Love that man, game is shite though. Nothing like the original sadly

Yea i've had no problems either. Ryan seems a little too close, considering the required distance to play. I've heard from a lot of Vive owners saying the PSVR is great.

I get problems when I'm facing away from one toward another, and my hands are in front of my chest. For some reason, the thing tracks sometimes with two lighthouses, sometimes one. Sometimes both, but it just throws a fit when one can't see. Other than that, I'm all around happy. It's worth the money, though I probably should have saved the $2400 I spent on my PC and Vive and put it to better use. But oh well, it's fun as hell.

This was great. Ryan was right. They needed to showcase what they truly felt about game and the controls (especially when it made the whole thing sillier). 10/10 will wait for Sony to release better motion controls.  ryan

i'm just questioning what the point of this game is. "Remember that game we made! Well here! How about you get literally strapped to a rail and shoot stuff that REMINDS you of that game!"

Ah yes, all of the stupid parts of until dawn + none of the interesting parts that made it good + gun = profit.

It wasn't even made to promote Until Dawn really, Sony just asked them to make a rail-based game for the headset and pretty much requested a link to U.D. I feel kinda bad for supermassive games...

Except Supermassive decided to make the game like this because it's supposed to showcase Josh and his descent into madness. It's not supposed to have much to do with the game itself, because Josh was in his own little world for most of it.

  • user-5761f47c31089

Sony put out space requirements and positioning guidelines to ensure the tracking would be smooth. If your setup doesn't match the guidelines then you don't get to complain about the tracking because the problem is you, not the controllers. I mean, there's a microphone between you and the camera for gods sake, obviously there's going to be occlusion every time you try to extend your arm off to the left.

      you're not right

    • user-5761f47c31089

Yeah, I kinda am. Sorry you don't like it, but reality doesn't care whether you like it or not. If there's a microphone between the camera and the controllers then obviously the camera is going to lose tracking whenever a controller passes behind the mic. This is a relatively well documented issue, many people who've reviewed the thing have noted that the tracking seems bad when they're making a video but that it works fine in their own homes. I set the thing up properly and it works perfectly fine. If you don't set the thing up properly then it's not going to work properly. End of story.

I don't see why people aren't liking it as much, I guess cause it's not a "true" Until Dawn DLC or second part, but for what it is, I think it's pretty cool.

I watched another youtuber and his girlfriend play this, and she was freaking out, it was really entertaining, so it's not boring if you're playing it. They also said the controls were a bit off in the aiming etc, but still this is "Phase 1" of VR overall, so let's just see what else comes in the future.

I will admit, a full Until Dawn VR experience would be amazing though.

Until Dawn is one of my favorite games. I liked that this game had different references to the original (the Hotel and Sanitorium sets, the woods, and mines, the pigs, Hannah and Beth, the Psycho, etc) But it really looked like this game is a piece of crap. The controls looked terrible and it didn't seem very well thought out. So, no I don't think you should do a part 2.
