the merlin guitar is based on a mandolin and the reason you "can't play wrong is that both the low string and the two high strings are set to D and the middle string is A, which is the 5th of D, it also only has frets tuned to a major scale.  Basically it's like the barred power chords of a drop D guitar except with mandolin strings.

There is a site called Merric's Musings that has a fairly extensive list of DnD modules to play. Many of which are free. I'd say give it a look over to see what you can find that will fit your party.

For all the people who say they need to be longer I ask, why? they are at a good length where they are now. not to long, not to short and leave us at a point where we know we will come back. it is like season one of lost.

  • onfreeman

I hate to say this but this is not that good of a show, dont get me wrong i love AH and roosterteeth, and I love D&D (Im a DM and critter [Critical Role fan for those who dont know]) and compared to them this is just silly, its too short to get anything meaningful done in game and the way that Frank handles the descriptions is lacking. And for those who say its editing and the players not having time the Critical Role cast are all voice actors and directors (one is Illadin from WoW and has a major expansion coming up featuring his character) and they dont have time either, one is habitually late because of work. For the editing they just stream it live uncut and everyone loves it, if you fans are really D&D fans then you will understand the slow down for looking at stuff and going through books and sheets. The players feel like they are playing a game not BEING their characters. I feel that if one were to die then they would just role another and keep going and shoe horn in the character as soon as possible. They need to treat the characters they play like Ryan in GTA (his "character" is murder happy). So in short these need to be longer if not they will either be canceled or at best (and in my case) barely registered background noise for work, the players need to get into the fantasy of their characters, and Frank needs to work on his descriptive skills

Edit: i know I'm going to get hate but whatever is my opinion and criticism of the show, if you dont like it stop reading

I disagree with you on most points, but do agree on the length being an issue, which is what everyone just about in the comments has said. As for not playing their "character", I'd say that they have been doing that quite well, particularly Ryan, Geoff, and Griffon, while from what I can tell, Gus and Michael's characters are just their personalities in general, which at least in Michael's case is always the situation. Frank's descriptions may not be to the standards you're used to or to what you'd expect from D&D groups who do it more often for videos and such, but I'd still say that they are very well done and do an exceptional job of making this an immersive show, when the episodes are longer and we have time to be immersed. For me, and a lot of us fans, this show is perfect aside from needing to go back to longer episodes. We didn't come here to see D&D players in a semi-professional environment or purely role-playing their characters by the book. We came here to see the AH crew playing D&D and having fun, which is exactly what we've gotten with this series so far.....

On a more personal note, I do accept your opinion and point of view, but it's rather hypocritical to end your post by saying that this is your opinion and that you might get criticism, but that if people don't like your opinion they shouldn't read the comments, because it implies that while this is your opinion and you have the right to post it, others should have said right if they disagree with you.....

"They need to treat the characters they play like Ryan in GTA (his "character" is murder happy)." Yes We would all love to see that, But that is not his character here. The only way i could see it is he converges back together quox (and Quox also would have to have that blood thirst) or he dies and rerolls his Character. If you want to read albus backstory I can send that to you. just message me.

OK a few points i apologize for the lack of clarity

      1. Professionalism of show, the argument that they are not professionals is just wrong, they are getting paid to make this show, they are professional voice actors and should put the same love that they put into their characters in rwby, or RVB, or xray and vav, and for Michael in particular Fairy Tail

      2. The issue of by the book or role-playing, they just need to talk to the NPCs (Frank) in character, they talk as the player, most DMs would not allow that as it makes it to where the character has more knowledge than they actually would. The show that is considered the best D&D show doesnt have the payers talking in character every second just when its needed.

      3. Character, I understand that some of them do a good job, yes Michael and gus are basically themselves, Griffon does a great job, Geoff hes learning a bard, and ryan is learning in my opinion. But a great portion of the time they use their character name and that takes some (not all i know) people out of the immersion. For the GTA bit i mentioned with ryan i was just pointing out how the murder happy BM_Vagabond in GTA is a character that Ryan plays in that game and puts effort and ultimately love into, if he were to lose his online account for GTA he would be upset.

      4. Time, everyone agrees needs to be longer, but again basing off the best show and what they will always be compared to the show should just be one long recording, no cuts no edits, a bathroom break is fine because i dont want to see Gus or Geoff piss themselves

Eh, I half agree with you. I don't think they should try to carbon copy CR though. They are playing with the AH style commentary that their fanbase enjoys. While it would help to put more emphasis on acting out their characters than they are right now, I don't think it's really so far off the mark to say it's a bad show as a result.

    • onfreeman

I agree it's not a bad show, I just said it wasn't that good, and yes they should be a CC of Critical Role but they should take inspiration from it and CR should take ideas from them, but comparing them is fair because it's like comparing RvB (universally the best machinima) to all the ones that came after. It's the basis and the standard

As many of the comments before me, THESE NEED TO BE LONGER!

Like this is an awesome series, but it's not going to last well when each episode is getting shorter and shorter.

This is a story driven game, and the better the immersion into the story the more entertaining for everyone.

Three hour episode for the test pilot was really awesome, but sure I get every episode being three hours won't with everyone's schedule. However this one hour is terrible. An hour and a half was okay, but still felt off. Heroes and Halfwits needs to be longer to allow for better story immersion for both the audience and more importantly the cast.

At the cost of immersion. That is what drives these mostly. It takes around 10 minutes to become fully immersed in the story and cutting it off early would leave people only watching a few episodes and then possibly leaving the series. I think it is that immersion that keeps me coming back as I have absolutely no D&D experience but become enthralled with the story progression and chance of the dice bringing unscripted turn-outs.

This show will die because it feels too much like a show. It is the same problem I have with their lets play content which I haven't watched in months. Not once in this show have Ryan, Geoff, or Griffon/Jack seemed bored, and Michael just perpetually seems bored unless a lot is going on, while Gus is just the "let's get shit done guy" in everything. Just because you don't like the content doesn't mean that no one does, or that the cast hates it. In fact, if you took even a few moments to read through the other comments on this page, you'd notice that 99% of them are people asking for longer episodes and really enjoying the series......

An hour and a half would be a good length for these episodes. 2 hours is pushing it big time, and any longer is just too long per episode. RT make a shit tonne of content and if they make uber long episodes of stuff I simply don't have the time to watch it, and that's after cherry picking through all their stuff so not even watching it all.

Based off what they've said, and how he acts, I figure Gus will be the real issue. I don't see Geoff, Ryan, or Griffon/Jack being issues, and I think that Michael is the type who would keep going regardless of whether he's bored or not so long as everyone else still wants to. Even if someone does get bored of it, there is the distinct possibility that they would just kill said person off and bring in a new character, so long as the show is still getting views.....

Gelatinous Oozes: The Greatest "F You" Resource a DM has

Oozes are one of the absolute worst monsters in a dungeon, as Frank so demonstrated with the "Walk into grapple with massive acid damage to you and your equipment" routine. In addition to several variants having a half full of immunities that make fighters cry, they can be anywhere at anytime for any reason. We may or may not have a dead paladin next week.

Especially for a low level party. Also swarms are deadly at low levels if you aren't well prepared to deal with them.

At least Mogar has a better chance of surviving in 5e than in 3.5. But they need to get him out of the ooze or RIP. I hope Frank has a cool way to introduce new characters if Mogar does die.

Well, Ryan does have a "plan", and we've found out two things about Ryan this series. The first is that he desperately wants to find someone/something that speaks Deep, and the second is that his plans seem insane but somehow work out better than expected......

My personal guess, (not knowing exactly how the spell works, but going off of what he's said about it), is that Ryan will try to jump into the monster, throw Michael out, and cast Hellish Rebuke to actually get some use from that spell, since technically the monster would be hurting him......

For those of you interested, I have found a site that will allow you to play online with friends and set up campaigns with a variety of rules. Currently getting a friend to DM for me, and he's going to set up a module. Have two players counting myself and a friend of mine, (who may or may not drop out after a session or two), and I plan on it being a four party member campaign, if anyone wants to join in. Here's the site either way. It's free to use, though it's one where you can opt in to pay a subscription fee to unlock more features like creating custom rule/mechanic sets and storage for easily transferring characters from one game to another......

While I don't play d&d specifically, even my group knows that you can't get much done in a single hour when playing a board game, pen&paper rpg, or other more involved table games. No wonder Frank suspects this campaign can take 7 years. All campaigns would take that long if every group only played 1 hour at a time.

Seem's like everyone wants longer episodes, and I echo that sentiment. I would also love the idea of keeping this an ongoing RT show with different personalities playing different campaigns. After this campaign ends, start up a new one(with a new DM or not, Frank is great!) and let people like Blaine/Jon/Jeremy/Miles etc run through a campaign. They are enough people in the RT staff to keep this going for a long time if you cycle it like that.

Ah, I didn't make it to that panel, I was at The Completionist's instead. But that seems like it might get stale eventually, I know the game can go forever with prestige classes and fighting higher level monsters, but that's part of why I'd like longer episodes, so they can complete a story and then move on to a new group of people. Maybe a different campaign every year or so with a different cast.

I could really enjoy the idea of future campaigns, and while I could see this campaign taking years at this rate, (particularly with shorter episodes like this), from the way Frank has been handling things, I suspect it'll have a definitive end point, rather than carrying on indefinitely once they finish the main story goal. I will say though that I find it unlikely that we'll get people like Miles or Blaine in on a campaign due to the fact that they are a multi-month process at minimum, and the animation and live action departments don't get a whole lot of free time comparatively speaking. They might find the time for a two or three episode one-off module, but I doubt we'd ever see them in a full campaign.....

I don't like shorter, I enjoy the empty banter talk, really brings it together and feels weird being under an hour. Also, I know it's 5th edition and he hasn't played in a while, but hasn't Geoff played D&D for like 10 years+

yes, but it seems he hasn't played since 3rd, and from what ancilary knowledge i have of d&d, there's a lot of new shit / changed shit if you just try diving in cold. plus, frank was there DM in the past too, and i suspect he used to carry a lot of the weight then as well like he does here.

The Merlin thing is true. each one is fretted to only play in a specific key. So you can never play out of key. That doesn't mean you CAN'T play it bad. But like a harmonica, you can diddle your way through a basic tune and it will generally sound okay.

can barbarians use heavy armor now?

    • Phoenix512 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Barbarians are only proficient up to medium armor. In 5e, using any armor that you aren't proficient in gives disadvantage in attack, ability, and saves that requires Strength or Dexterity. Also if you're a spell caster, you can't cast spells. So Griffith isn't going to be hitting much and negated her Danger Sense ability by wearing heavy armor.

No, just just Light and Medium armor. They'll probably catch that at some point and fix it.

I think the shorter length is due to being on Youtube. I imagined they want to get other people who aren't DnD fans to watch the series and longer length videos on Youtube don't do as well which various RT personalities have said in the past. I wonder if the episode length question was asked in the Heroes and Halfwits panel at RTX.

I also recall the pilot was just for First people so having a 3 and half hour episode is fine because they weren't posting it to Youtube and had to conform to that type of audience. I imagine they could have made it a First only show easily with 2 hour episodes but they want grab new people and can't do that unless it's on Youtube.

I get Griffith is more into role-playing than the mechanics but I want her to actually use the rage ability. Sure she can deal some nice damage but she will be even better at dealing damage and any weapon damage done on her is reduced by half. Orma needs to rage very badly.

Actually it's Griffon. If you're going to correct someone, make sure you spell it right.

Love this show though it does suck that each episode is getting shorter and shorter. 3h was great but 2 to 1 and a half would be good too if they are that concerned with time. See a lot of people commenting that they record a lot more than an hour and then edit it right down because of dead air but I'm pretty sure in this episode Geoff said several times they had reached an hour and wanted to stop forgive me if I misheard. They kept going because they didn't want to include all the leveling up in the video. I'd like to see all those details too if possible, like in separate videos if need be.
