They stated that Orma is a character that they wanted to use multiple people for.  This is a way to rotate different people in to the game to make it more interesting and add different perspective for the character development.

if the table is a computer screen why don't they create a black ring for the darkness spell or other area effects for the show?

    • EricHVela FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Open Mon-Fri 6:30AM-4PM

It's not that simple. It sounds simple, but it's not. They did this setup rather quickly. I suspect they're looking into ways of quickly and accurately manipulating the image on the second screen in a non-destructive manner (as the effects will be temporary).

There will need to be a quick means of identifying where the props are on the screen using a second controller (like the DM's tablet) and a means to draw the information using that same screen since they cannot directly manipulate the large monitor-table directly. The best thing that I can think is something that will generate a shape with the proper parameters and the DM will visually position it onto the second screen on its own layer that the DM can remove later. PowerPoint might be able to do it, but I've never tried to manipulate an active, full-screen slideshow on a second screen using PowerPoint.

Remember, it needs to be quickly inline with the flow of the encounter rather than making everyone wait when a condition changes during the encounter. Trial and error to position it correctly (such as pulling the image out of full-screen to make an edit which alters the scale of the image while it is not full-screen) is not an option.

One option is to edit in the effect after-the-fact like they do with other things just for our sakes to understand what is happening, but that's not what you were requesting and it could delay the release of the video more than we might think.

Also, the kind of magic darkness that the Drows used in these rules is a cube and not a ring.

Thankyou That actually clears things up. When I was looking back at the video I released that the "Stage" peices are not actually detailed into the map and like you said the trail and error would slow it down.

So, a helpful thought: it'd be nice for the notes that are being passed to be overlaid on the screen for the viewers. It would make things a lot more interesting.

    • EricHVela FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Open Mon-Fri 6:30AM-4PM

I dunno. It makes it more interesting to me to not know what they're about to try to do and pretend to do. Some of the notes to the DM could have just "Please, roll ___ die (for no reason at all)." or "Send me a note." or "I like your hat." just to make people suspicious, particularly when coming from Chaotic characters and from Evil characters. They explained this at RTX. It makes me feel like I'm an observer of the scene as it plays out -- seeing only what they can see as any other party member. I wouldn't like to know what their characters are thinking if the player is not telling the rest of the party.

Well if you're perception is good enough you would have heard Frank whisper something incredibly important to Geoff, something that is most definitely going to come up again soon.

@EricHVela Yeah, I was at that panel! Sad they didn't play, but still. Anyway. I thought of this. Some people like to be the equivalent of an observing player, but some want to be the equivalent of an observing DM. I guess I'd rather be the latter.

Maybe (and this is where it gets into a decent amount of work), they use the linkdump with timestamps for notes. Then it's optional.

If what's happening is what I think is happening, the "dopplegangers" might not be your run-of-the-mill shapeshifters (such as Dragons and Rakshasa -- who have an bloody past with Dragons). If that's true, silver might not do anything to them, but underestimation might lead the local to believe they're the more-common silver-affected shapeshifters. The fact that Bahamut is in the picture beyond the party members means that Tiamat is also likely in the picture (and the Rakshasa will make a 3rd party of interest that doesn't like either of them). Both employ dragons to meddle in the affairs of mortals in the form of unsuspecting Humanoids. In fact, Bahamut's Priests (the higher priests) are often Dragons. Shapeshifted Dragons and Rakshasa are not affected by Silver in any special way. (They already encountered Kobolds who worship evil Dragons in D&D lore.)

General Question from someone who is just learning to play D&D: Why is Frank keeping track of their initiatives on those pink slips? Is it just for curiosity or will they have an effect on the game? Or is that not what he's doing with the pink slips and I'm miss interpreting whats going on. Thanks!

Frank is using the pink slips as scratch paper. So everyone rolls for initiative for that specific encounter and then Frank keeps track of who's turn it is from that list. He may also use it to keep track of things like enemy health etc. The character initiatives are then discarded at the end of combat so Frank is using a fresh piece of paper every encounter.

When Orma 3 was finally going to use the Rage class feature that the other Ormas didn't use, I thought about time but it was for naught. Orma Prime had to wear that splint mail and negate all benefits of raging. Orma needs to shed that splint mail and be free.

I'm gonna channel the CinemaSins guy and say to this whole episode: That's racist. But it was also super funny. Jeremy looked so confused at the beginning but once he started bashing people with his maul, the blood lust transformed confusion into happiness. That's probably the biggest problem with them subbing people in for Griffon. The new Orma's are so confused and have to get a very short summary of what has happened. I understand that Griffon has other things that she has to do; she is a mother and I believe she has a job that's not associated with RT. But it could become a problem later if they keep subbing in new people to play as Orma for a short time. It's not the people I have a problem with, it's how it effects the game.

    • CaptainJuliAmerica FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Griffon expressed in a periscope, I think, that originally her character (Orma) was meant to be a flexible character so that they could have guests rotate through and that she was only meant to start the character, whereupon each successive guest would be different. I think the reason it feels weird is that the audience reacted so positively toward Griffon playing they had her come back after Jack. If they had continued with different people it probably wouldn't be a smoother game, but it might be easier to understand the continuous guest swap. Personally, I love Griffon's Orma and I would love for her to be a regular player, but I'm not going to say no to the guests because they have been great as well!

I hear what you're saying, but would like to suggest this way of thinking about it to explain. Orma, being a battle hardened half-orc Barbarian, has seen some shit. She has been in possibly hundreds of battles, been beaten to a pulp on numerous occasions, possibly even captured and tortured at times. Due to the extreme situations her body and mind have been put through, her mind had to divide itself into compartments just to shield as much as it could from the pain and suffering. This is a real thing and it's called dissociative identity disorder. While not all symptoms are present (all three "personalities" thus far answer to Orma, for example), this explanation, in my opinion, goes a long way in explaining the changes in Orma and it even gives our Heroes and Halfwit (notice how there is only one Halfwit) an extra challenge to deal with during their adventure. So instead of looking at it like the player has to switch out to do other stuff, look at it as though the character herself is going through these jarring and unsettling switches in personality and memory. It keeps us in the game!

I'm really hopeing that as soon as either Gus's character or Mogar try casting a spell or using Lay on Hands, Frank just goes, "Hey, remember when you guys killed an unarmed drow that surrendered? You could argue they were doing their paladin duties. The drow admitted to his crimes and was punished for the. If spared he would have most likely told the other Drow of their position and compromised their mission and their party and Gus's flaw is that he would do good even if it hurt others. I guess they could have taken him prisoner? I don't know much about the universe, but there is an argument there that can go on for hours I'm sure.

    • Teshiku FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Bobnugget He admitted that they were out looking for slaves, not that they had enslaved anyone, nor that he ever had. Even if it was a sin, they didn't commit it. And by crime, they're in Drow/Kobold controlled territory, and slavery is legal there. The first two were in self-defense, the third could arguably be added in that as he still had weapon drawn. The last one was cowering, absolutely terrified, unarmed, cooperating, and then killed in cold blood! Was there any talk of tying him up and leaving him in the old cube's room? No. Was there any talk of gagging him so he couldn't call out to the others? No. Just talk of binding him and throwing him into a death "trap"! "Do good even at the cost of others", no good was done, no attempt to do good...

I'm sorry, don't mean to rant on the subject, just hate this type of paladin so very very much...

    • Millweed

The bad thing about that though, is that the DM is basically saying "fuck your creativity" by not letting it work. Logically speaking, a bright light would be as blinding to a creature that lives almost exclusively underground as those darkness spells are to these guys. It has nothing to do with the sun itself, or scaring the drow, it's should just be straight up too bright for them to see. Example: Turn on your bathroom light in the middle of the night? Your blind for a few seconds, and that's after a couple hours in the dark. For someone/thing evolved to LIVE underground, they should be rendered blind till the light goes out.

    • Jolton246 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Millweed the spell doesn't work like that. It would create an image of the sun but it wouldn't create light it says so in the spell description. There is a spell, Daylight, that would have done what Ryan wanted.

    • Jolton246 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Millweed Think of it this way. If you stared at the sun, it would hurt your eyes. If you took a picture of the sun and stared at the picture, you would be fine.

    • Millweed

@Jolton246 How do you magically produce an image? You manufacture light. It's less of a picture and more of an led tv, where the image is produced by the light it's made of, not reflected light from an outside source. It would have worked like you say, except that frank (guy with the power to make it so) flat out states that the image ryan creates is bright (producing it's own light), it just doesn't consist of SUN light. Now, you're probably thinking, "exactly, franks the DM, so he makes the rules! haha!" but thats my entire point, frank decided that ryan just couldn't do it, thus killing his attempts at creativity and outside the box thinking. Frank could have avoided this by saying, "well that spell doesn't actually make any light, it's just like a picture" but he didn't, the difference between saying, you can't do that, and saying, I'm not gonna let you do that.

    • Jolton246 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Millweed It created the illusion of light. It doesn't created light. Daylight is a lvl 3 evocation spell, while silent image is a lvl 1 illusion spell. That would be like if Ryan just decided that eldritch blast created an explosion in a twenty foot radius, just because he says it, it doesn't make it so. Being creative works better if you understand your own abilities.

    • Kaitlyn221 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Y'all have both lost me. I don't care that his idea didn't work, or whether or not it should have. I'm saying it was a bloody impressively creative idea.

    • Millweed

@Jolton246 except for the part where all illusions are MADE of light. If you can see it, it's either producing light, or it's reflecting light, for something to reflect light it has to physically exist, since illusions don't physically exist, they must produce their own light. Now fair enough, you say daylight is a level 3 evocation spell actually producing the properties of sunlight, but Ryan wasn't trying to make SUNlight, he was just trying to make LIGHT.My point is that Frank (the dm, and therefore basically god) is telling ryan that he's not letting him do it. Which he totally has the power to do, I'm not disputing that, I'm saying that his use of said power is discouraging creativity. To be super clear: RYAN WASN'T TRYING TO COOK THE DROW, OR GIVE THEM A TAN, OR FEED SOME DAMN PLANT, HE WAS JUST TRYING TO MAKE A BRIGHT LIGHT. FRANK SAID HIS IMAGE WAS BRIGHT.

Therefore in this instance, because the DM has final say, it is not a case of the spell not being able to do what ryan said, it's a case of the DM changing how the target of said spell reacts. I.e frank saying he doesn't want it to work, as opposed to it just not being possible.
So it boils down to frank (again, basically god) saying I believe your spell creates light, I also believe I don't want that to help you in any way, therefore I BELIEVE THAT CREATURES THAT LIVE PRIMARILY UNDERGROUND IN PITCH FUCKING BLACK HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH BRIGHT LIGHT, THEY'RE JUST ALLERGIC TO UV RAYS! (Ridiculous)

@Millweed It is clear you do not understand how the spell works. Once again, it doesn't physically create anything. Your mind is deceived into believing something is there when it isn't. The spell silent image would not provide any illumination. "The image is purely visual; it isn't accompanied by sound, smell, or other sensory effects." The room did not get brighter, they were just tricked into thinking it did, which would not affect someone with sunlight sensitivity. If they were not carrying torches they would not have been able to see the illusion unless they had darkvision. It was not the DM crushing creativity, it was Ryan trying to use a 1st lvl spell to create a 3rd lvl spell.

@Jolton246 I have previously addressed this, so one last time:

      FRANK IS DM.
      DM HAS FINAL SAY.
FRANK SAID IT PRODUCED LIGHT. (AS DM, HE GETS TO DO THIS)

FRANK COULD HAVE DESCRIBED IT LIKE YOU DID (IN THEIR MINDS)
      BUT HE DIDN'T.

BECAUSE THE WORDING FOR THAT SPELL IS VAGUE

IT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEING MENTAL

      IT JUST SAYS IT'S VISUAL

      AS IN, SOMETHING YOU SEE.

SO FRANK CAN RULE THAT IT PRODUCES LIGHT.

      THAT SHOULD BLIND A DROW.
DROW LIVE UNDERGROUND, EVEN THOSE TORCHES SHOULD BE GIVING THEM A HARD TIME.
HE SAID THEY'RE NOT AFFECTED BECAUSE IT'S NOT FROM THE SUN.
ERGO, HE MADE THE SITUATION SUCH THAT, THESE DROW HAVE FUCKING SUPER EYES, ABLE TO SEE IN PITCH BLACK, AND BRIGHT LIGHT, WITH NO TROUBLE.

ERGO, HE IMPLIED "FUCK YOUR CREATIVITY, I DON'T WANT IT TO HAPPEN, SO IT'S NOT HAPPENING"

I really hope that was finally clear enough. You seem to be coming at this from the point of view of someone who's played DnD before. Remember that Ryan has not. So Ryans basis for what can/can't be done comes from what Frank tells him. Remember when Ryan asked if it's possible to fire a rope arrow into the gelatinous cube to free Michael? He's still learning what's possible in DnD, so as far as he's concerned Frank just confirmed that Silent Image can produce bright light, and drow have super eyes that are only foiled by UV rays.

And now I'LL repeat myself, since you both won't shut up.

I don't give a shit that it didn't work. Even the greatest of plans may fail, and unfortunately for the party, Ryan's did. It doesn't change the fact that it was still a great idea. Not to mention they still won the skirmish.

      Now please. Enough bickering.

Seen as visual effects seem to be thing now can we at least make the text descriptions last a bit longer? As I find I've always found the need to pause to read them before they fade out.

But that's the nice thing about a video isn't it? You can just pause it and read the text without missing any dialogue. Novel, I know.

I'm gunna have to agree, here. Yeah, you can "just pause the video" but who sits there for an hour to an hour and a half with the finger on the pause button? You see text and by the time you move your hand to the mouse and then move the pointer to the pause button, you have to first REWIND because the text is gone. Leave the text there, even if just an extra second or second and a half. It's a trivial amount but makes all the difference.

It's becoming more and more obvious, Dory IS a pedophile. I love how quickly it went from Bojingles to Papa Door.

Well Bojingles is only 17; he's not old enough to be considered a pedophile.

Honestly, I still think their initial test video was the best. Don't get me wrong, they've all been great. But Micheal knocking Geoff the fuck out with a crit (killing him without DM intervention), after three hours of shit rolls, was epic as all hell!

In the spirit of RT/AH community, and if you're serious, would you be up for starting a game? There are online options for doing D&D that are free, which is good cause odds are good we're vastly far from each other lol

Indeed me and some of my friends use roll20 for dnd and other table top games. Its quick and easy for anyone to set up a game and invite their friends to play as long as you can get someone to be your DM, I bet there are probably a few RT fans on the site here that would be more then happy to help you out with that
