anyone else think that this isn't that bad of a change for Michael? He always made it clear that he wanted to be a dark knight and was pretty quick in wanting to betray his party. Just because his alingment changed to Lawful Evil didn't mean he had to betray his party, yet seemed really eager to.

This was such a great episode!  I'm really excited to see what comes from these new developments.  I really love Mogar, so I hope that his alignment change doesn't get him killed or kicked from the party!  I also hope that he eventually switches back (although I'm kind of biased, because chaotic good is one of my favorite character alignments).

Although I do have a question for more experienced D&D players (I'm going to put it under spoilers, though!

So, even though Mogar's alignment has switched to Lawful Evil, that doesn't change any of his modifiers/bases, right?  Like, he's still dumb as shit.  Because I've seen a few comments on here talking about Mogar starting an evil plan against the party, but like, he still has an intelligence modifier of -1.  If he does start planning something against the party, Michael would have to roleplay it really badly, because Mogar might not be "intelligent" enough to pull it off.  If this had happened to Albus or Bor Ealis, it would've been a different story, because they already have the intelligence/deception to be able to manipulate and fool people.  I just feel like if this is the case, Michael is going to have to be very careful with his roleplaying, because there's a tendency to play Lawful Evil characters as very intelligent and manipulative, but if Mogar's base stats haven't been changed, his "interpretation" of Lawful Evil will be very different.

the brutal truth is that Michael most probably won't be able to "get it right". For reasons unknown to me he's not great at roleplaying (and I'm aware he didn't play any games like that before). But You're correct, with negative Intellect he shouldn't be able to pull off some masterplan. I would say that a character with his attributes and allignment should focus on getting himself what he wants while tricking others into thinking about him as someone who's guided by good in his life (so basically not pulling out some masterplan that destroys the team but just gaining power while tricking others on the way)

I loved this but think it would've been better if when Geoff went through the portal he was separated like Mogar was as it makes the party even more suspicious of Michael because his portal was top secret but Geoff's was apparently not important enough to be secret so they all know (in metagaming sense) that he's been influenced!

Two things that are REALLY frustrating for me with this episode: 1. Mogar didn't try to go back through the portal 2. It seems like Albus forgot that he has a sprite that he could use for recon

Well to be fair, for point one, maybe Mogar didn't want to reverse his alignment back, in case that's what happened. Evil types don't generally want to become Good. The second point I will give to you :P Albus has a habit of forgetting that he has cool shit he can use.

Yeah. Dexter would be a lawful evil. He has a code he follows despite committing crimes. Satan is another example of this. An evil with a plan to follow and rules to how they can do it. The Devil works in contracts and wagers to do his evil. He doesnt just destroy, but he infiltrates and executes a plan.

exactly like how the guy above me said. To be Lawful Evil means you that you follow a strict code on how to operate. So you can take and do what you want, but it has to be allowed in the code you follow. Most common example are devils.

Sooo much fucking metagaming when Mogar went into the portal... Like SERIOUSLY... THIS SHIT NEEDS TO STOP. Its funny at times - but when mister Yakshashaderp starts pulling meta-thisisnolongermogar-shit out of his ass when they had no such plans before he went through and Frank pulled Michael aside... It just ruins the fun that Michael could have had...

    • tiller_eriksen FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

But, he's not metagaming. He doesn't actually know whether or not Mogar has actually changed aside from his gender. For all he knows, Frank could've pulled Michael aside for some other reason relating to his gender swap. He's just reasonably skeptical that Mogar's gender may not be the only thing that was changed by the trip through the portal.

    • M_Keyn FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

      @tiller_eriksen
      @SarahOlivier29
      How is it NOT metagaming...?
If Frank had simply told Michael he turns into a woman (Foregoing the evil part) in front of everybody - then Geoff would not have reacted this way AT ALL... And that's not even mentioning Gus - I mean really - is he the type of guy to suddenly make a contingency plan? In most cases no - he's the guy that reacts to stuff and in this case he reacted to Frank pulling Michael aside instead of reacting to Mogar going into a weird portal - instead of minute concern for Mogar (If he had been reacting to the second option) he was reacting to what Frank had done. And again - even that is not mentioning how different this situation would be if the whole Yakshashamu thing never happened. If Geoff hadn't ever been killed/replaced then they might have not even considered something like Mogar turning evil a possibility - let alone PREPARED for it as if it was an eventuality...
... Urgh... Basically... Geoff overreacted utterly - was completely out of character (Both for Old Akshay and New/Geoff Akshay) just because he metagamed the shit out of that situation...
Were this like - 3 episodes before the end of the first adventure - the whole group would have simply been concerned and amused by the Mogar situation... Now they're letting themselves be driven completely by the Yakshashamu-debacle (Which is of course ironically almost exactly what happened to Michael in the sense of he's switched sides)... And it angers me because I think Michael being Evil is fucking amazing. If it weren't for the natural suspicion surrounding him now - he would be able to pull off the most amazing betrayal since fricking GiveMeYourMilk (Ok, couldn't think of a better example - sue me :P) - and NOBODY would have suspected Michael of all people to betray the party (If he did actually do that - what he does is of course completely up to him :P)
So yeah... It's metagaming to suddenly switch your plans because the DM did something that made the player (Not their character) suspicious. And no - I don't think that it would be "boring" without the metagaming because.... well because of that one paragraph I already wrote above...
Jeez... I wrote way too much didn't I...?
P.S. That all holds true in my opinion unless of course you're one of those guys who actually wants the party to succeed... In which case I have to ask... Where's the fun in that? jk

It’s not particularly metagaming as it is reasonable to assume that their characters would be suspicious of a character changing dramatically after the whole Bo Jingles thing. If you watch episode 1 of the tomb when they reintroduced their characters Michael said that morgar is more suspicious of people due to past experiences.

However the episode can lead to metagaming in the future as frank didn’t pull Geoff to one side to discuss what he sees in private as he decided it’s not too important, so if you put yourself in their shoes then they could easily assume something greater happened to Morgar that only Michael can know about and will change how he plays the game as a whole.

In essence, being realistically suspicious is not metagaming but Franks choices of DMing has left the door wide open for future metagaming

I agree Geoff played it a little too heavy on the Mogar is sus. as fuck. But the others not so much.
Also, I feel like when Frank let the rest of the party hear what happens to Akshay, by disclaiming with the "I trust you guys...." statement. He's casting doubt on some of the thought the players have on what might have happened to Mogar.
They clearly know Akshay is in trouble and there's some kind of evil shit going on with him. But the only thing they definitely know with Mogar is the gender change. There's no outstandingly obvious indication of alignment change. And since Borealis hasn't sensed any evil yet, he has no reason to think Mogar has changed sides.

    • M_Keyn FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Chewy77 True - I did not think on how Frank counteracted that much - it's likely going to be fine but still - I think it's annoyingly ironic that Geoff is the one to be so suspicious. Logical - but annoyingly ironic.

@Xlaser I feel like you only read the gist of my admittedly nigh-insane rant. The point I'm making is not that they should not be suspicious - it is only logical to be suspicious in that scenario, yes, even for their actual characters. However, the point I am making is that they would not be this suspicious if Frank had not pulled Mogar aside. Again - very slowly so there's no mistaking what I'm trying to say.

The party was careful when Mogar went in the portal. Logically, they should have been suspicious already of a "What if Mogar gets nabbed?" scenario by then. And they were - they tied a rope around him - i.e. unless someone unties it - whoever is tied to the rope is Mogar. Mogar goes in the portal.

At this point : Nobody is suspicious of Mogar changing in any way. They do no think anything happened to him - he just went into a portal. Frank pulls Michael aside.

At THIS point - suspicions form. Not because Mogar went into the portal. Not because he returned a woman. But because Frank pulled him aside... No other reason.

      Mogar returns as a female.

Akshay - the drunk turned martial arts master (Kinda meh story btw but Geoff makes it work) trusted the people he hadn't seen in 15 years (Even if he had reason to be grateful) merely on sight. They even were antagonistic towards Bojingles whom he idolized - but he STILL trusted them. So... seems like a trusting fellows doesn't he...?

Mogar reappears a woman - which Akshay certainly wouldn't mind much considering his (Old and New) character.

      Mogar doesn't act differently.

...But he is immediately suspected of being evil/not being Mogar anymore. With trusting, funny-guy Akshay turning into a fricking inquisitioner the moment he comes out... Again... Why were they suspicous?

Not because of the sex change or they would have become suspicious after his sex change was revealed. Not because of the portal - or they would have made contingencies before-hand (If you go in and turn evil are you okay with us killing you?)

But... BECAUSE OF METAGAMING... Because when Frank pulled him aside, they knew - SOMETHING HAPPENED. Which their characters WOULD NOT KNOW!!! Not until Mogar returned from the portal and was seen as a woman. If at that point Akshay, Albus and Borealis (The dwarf change was also very wtf-why btw but I'm loving it, at least he isn't a racist fuck anymore) went to the side and had a little "Contingency" conversation then it would be fine - their characters would have every right to be suspicious at that point (Taking into consideration that they had no such suspicions before Mogar went into the portal)...

Now... While my original post was quite vehement - I don't really mind that much... I think Geoff is being unreasonably suspicious and VERY out of character (Running into the portal is a Bojingles move not an Akshay move), but it's fine... However... trying to fucking convince me that this was not metagaming is just fucking stupid and has driven me to writing two stupid-ass paragraphs about how it IS metagaming... And a great and hopefully wrong part of me thinks I've been getting extra flak on this issue (My crass writing aside) because of the whole Geoff and Griffon thing... Which again, I really hope I'm wrong about since that would be just... just stupid beyond belief...
But anyway... Whether I've managed to help anyone see the rather obvious truth here or not... Don't respond... Or if you do - don't expect another answer - I think I've had enough internet for today...

The source of divine magic depends on the class. Clerics, yes, though they can totally defect to other gods and *don't* have to match the god's alignment... Just goals. (So in this case, they probably would have lost their powers...)

Paladins in 5e "gain their powers from their dedication to justice just as much as any god," so they can but don't need to - they don't even have to be LG anymore.

Druids can and do gain their powers from nature deities but usually worship nature as an all-consuming thing. Rangers do something similar.

so if I understand correctly Blue Apron is selling 500 ml bottles of wine for the price of 700 ml and then tell us it's a good deal for the customer? Next ad will sound like "our wine is awful. Buy it, check for yourself. And then buy some more wine to tell your friends about how awful it is so they can try it too!"

Or "we know you're a raging, piece of shit alcoholic, so our bottles are even smaller. So you can continue feeding your addiction but hey, at least you drink less now"

its the weirdest advertising I've ever seen - like, their solution to a half bottle of wine is obviously to pour it down the sink instead of leaving in the fridge to drink later. What they're selling is the ability to finish a bottle in a night, which is nothing, it was even a joke on a Scottish TV show: "Are you a lightweight? Can you only drink one can before you're out for the count? We have the solution for you! A beer can that's 1/16 the size! Now you can drink 16 cans in one sitting!"

Put it in a fridge, you can add it later to stew/other food or drink it before sleep after a hard work day.

I am almost certain that Geoff has played a D&D game with Tomb of Horrors at some point in the past. But he can't outright say to the rest of them that Mogar is now evil as it would be metagaming, and we know for a fact that Geoff is an amazing roleplayer, I absolutely love how into character he gets; it's really good to see him being enthusiastic after he took that sabbatical, I got really tired of seeing sad Geoff.

In the middle of a battle later on he chugged it and it was a permanent potion of sex change...and we rolled for breast size. Im slowly learning that it isnt uncommon

How does Mogar’s “change” affect access to Paladin abilities?

Nothing yet but soon he might diss his god and lose all of his ablities.

Shouldn't be that huge an issue, his Oath being Vengeance means it would be hard to break and while he'll probably offend his old god, Paladins powers aren't technically granted by god in 5th edition.

He could become an Oathbreaker which would be cool but probably revealed that he's changed for sure.

Lol the promo is also HalfWitSwine.  I geuss blue arpron doesn't mind a chance of offending customers out of confusion if they are still a sponsor after this long anyways. Props to them for supporting them so we could see what happened to Mogar this time. 10/10

So The gang has already found out that Mogar is evil or they have all died already right? if not that clip of Mogar changing alignment that we saw would spoil it for them.

They likely either chose not to watch the video/clip so as to eliminate chances of meta-gaming, or they know and are just being very disciplined about it.

Pretty sure they've said they sit an record these in like 6 hour sessions to get 2-3 episodes out. I don't think they are gonna want to go back and watch through it after that

Kinda disapointed Franks not using a custom written campaign for this one, at least not a full custom one seeing as he's using the tomb of horrors

It was always bothering me that if they wake up and do anything they have to start the long rest over again.  It seems in this case that they didn't do anything too strenuous so they wouldn't have had to restart the rest.  That was 12 hours of resting, that is a long time.

You are correct Frank will hopefully re-check the rules for a long rest page 186 of the players handbook.

      LONG REST
A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 8
hours long, during which a character sleeps or performs
light activity: reading, talking, eating, or standing watch
for no more than 2 hours. if the rest is interrupted by a
period of strenuous activity—at least 1 hour of walking,
fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity—
the characters must begin the rest again to gain any
      benefit from it.
At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost
hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up
to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total
number of them. For example, if a character has eight
Hit Dice, he or she can regain four spent Hit Dice upon
      finishing a long rest.
A character can't benefit from more than one long rest
in a 24-hour period, and a character must have at least
I hit point at the start of the rest to gain its benefits.
