In the old versions, if you got the defense of the slowpoke down to it's minimum and then beat it and start waking back to the town, mew is level 1. after catching it, if you go into another battle and mew gains less than 33 XP (roughly) the game goes crazy and make mew go from level 1 to level 100.

I have red for the 3ds and no matter how many times I tried I could not get the new after losing to the slowpoke. When walking across nugget bridge after losing a trainer would randomly battle me instead. After beating the slowpoke and crossing the bridge then I was challenged by mew. It popped my start menu first as soon as I closed it mew appeared.

So, I've already beaten this part and defeated all these trainers, will it not work for me now?

So long as that Youngster with the Slowpoke hasn't been beat, you can get it with another trainer. There's a Gambler on the route between Lavender and Saffron that you can teleport/fly from, then after Slowpoke go to Lavender and leave to the left.

It's so cool that this was in Blue and Red for so long yet it was only discovered fairly recently. Makes you wonder what else we might uncover in other games in the future.

Just to let you know, as seen above obviously, you can fight the slowpoke, but it's not actually needed for the original version of the game, as for re-releases I have yet to test it. Thought I would give you the heads up.

    • MoMisteries

You need to fight something to trigger the fight. What triggers which Pokemon you encounter is actually the Special Stat of the Pokemon you face prior. That's what writes the code. The Slowpoke works because of the special stat. Also, the digital releases are literally rereleases of the original games. Nothing was changed, hence these glitches.

Well I made a video on this very subject with only cuts for catching the abra and getting into the fight, but in my video I didn't need to fight the slowpoke, why I got voted down, no idea but ah well, I have video footage of it. I defeated the slowpoke prior, the only thing is, it might be different due to me doing it on yellow and AH being on blue, but either way, the slowpoke wasn't needed, as soon by my video with my idiotic, speech-inpediment voice. If you don't believe me, feel free to visit my YouTube channel and check it it out.

I kinda want to see a outtakes/BTS video for this. I'm sure it'll be funny. I think way back, you could get nintendo people to do this for you at special events. Though I'm not sure if that's true or not, it was years ago.

The trick is not actually slowpoke! the trick is finding a trainer with at least one space between you in the encounter. the first trainer in the cerulean city gym works aswell you can simply fight the swimmer and it works the same!

    • MoMisteries

The trick is actually the Special Stat of the Pokemon you face. The Slowpoke and the first trainer in Misty's gym work because of the special stat. Using this technique, you can catch virtually any Pokemon at level 7, you just need to find out the proper Special Stat.

You can actually use this glitch (a version of it at least) to get a level 100 Mew. Instead of fighting the person with the slowpoke, fight the first trainer in Misty's gym (on the right in the water). Then growl at his Shellder 6 times, then finish the fight. Now when you encounter the Mew it will only be level 1. Once you capture it, place it on top of your party and go into some grass and fight a wild pokemon. Fight a low level pokemon, and immediately switch out Mew for another pokemon. Mew must receive less than 54 exp for this to work. After the fight is finished, Mew will then grow to level 100. I remember doing this when I played pokemon on my GBC, but I had to use this guide to remember the specifics.

Fun fact. Nintendo didn't even know Mew was in the game until after it had come out.

I'm sure they DID know, otherwise somebody just snuck the code in when no one was looking. They had to put Mew in so it could be retreived from their special events, they just made no legit way to get it outside of events.

    • CSLMuramasa FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Demon Blade

That's exactly what happened. Two weeks before they launched all the debugging tools were removed and one of the programmers noticed that it freed up just enough space for one extra pokemon. Since there was all the backstory about Mewtwo and Mew he quickly designed Mew and stuck it in.

    • CptObvious1994 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Thanks, Captain Obvious

So how did that programmer expect people to catch Mew? Because this is just abusing a glitch.

    • CSLMuramasa FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Demon Blade

He didn't. He didn't think anyone would ever find Mew. He put it in with the thought that maybe it could be used someday. But the thing about putting something in after the debugging is you can't tell what will happen with it. So he didn't know about this glitch until rumors started about a way of catching a "secret pokemon" started spreading. Those rumors cause the sales of pokemon to quadruple and that's why it's so popular today.
