      @M_Keyn I'll agree on being one of the weaker starter line ups in terms of general idea, though at least Rowlet gets some unique typing for a starter as it evolves. Honestly, I'd say that Sun and Moon are some of the best pokemon games in recent years, (though Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are my favorite since they had strong nostalgia for me while being different enough to make it a new experience), but they do have problems. Namely that there are too many grass and bug type pokemon in this generation, so unless you're specifically trying for different types, you're likely to have a party that ends up fairly weak against fire......

      The biggest issue though is the lack of post game content. I don't count bonus side stories as that, because to me they're just a continuation of the main story content. What I mainly mean is the battle area has progressively been getting less and less interesting and having less to do over the years, meaning that it becomes more of a dull grind than an incentive to train new teams. It was particularly the case with this generation as it took out triple battles due to the hardware limitations, (mostly because they boosted graphics at the expense of gameplay), and double battles cause immense lag if you're playing on an older 3DS, combined with the fact that the AI teams in the battle area are built to be based off the meta of tanks and status effects. The end result is either being limited to a slow paced single battle, or a laggy slow paced double battle, which just takes the fun out of raising teams unless you're planning on battling other trainers online. By far the best post game content we've had in the series was back with Emerald version, which gave us a wide variety of challenges and different set ups for the battles, rather than just straight forward "battle these 21 trainers in a row the exact same way*......

      @Gamer3427
      Personally love Emerald the most (admittedly since I was kinda late with Pokemon and got Emerald as my first game - went and played the previous ones and up to XY later) and while I have found most games - even after the main story is finished - perfectly fine, since I often set myself little challenges - i.e. let's make an entirely new party and go from beginning to end of the map again - or something - but what rubs me the wrong way with these newer titles is the absolute ease of it all... It's honestly because I mostly play against the AI which isn't all too brilliant - but even the general stuff seems like the entire company (Nintendo Gamefreak etc - whoever else is in the Pokemon triumvirate) is trying to appeal more to the newer/younger players than to its old fanbase...
      I mean really... you just tell people what's "super-effective" now? I know it really means zilch in the end - but it just irrationally annoys me that they don't just let you figure it out on your own - sure, some of the more obscure stuff like Fairy vs Fight is a matter of hit and miss when you're first learning - but Fire vs Water and stuff like that? Pretty sure that despite the baby-boom of the 21st millenia, most of your customers are older fans that play the games because they bought Yellow, Gold etc when they were young... And you have to babysit them and tell them that Water is really good against Fire...? Seriously...?
      Oh, also - I hated that they changed the rival thing up - your rival was a douchebag sometimes (Or just had really bad/annoying timing) but at least you could rely on that and on the fact that his starter was your opposite... -.-
      I am unreasonably annoyed by all this - as you can no doubt see - and as I freely admit. The game is still good, but this, along with the Pokemon Go hype that also missed me by just made me want to forget about all this "new stuff" and go back to the GBA-versions...

    • Gamer3427 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold taC terceS

      4 months ago

      @M_Keyn I can absolutely agree with the Super Effective thing making it way too easy, particularly since there's no option to turn it off. Part of the fun of Pokemon has always been that you had to either learn what pokemon were weak against what, or just use trial and error. It takes a significant portion of the challenge out when you're basically told "use this against this pokemon". While it doesn't show up the first time you battle a pokemon, you're not likely to instantly know that pokemon's types unless you catch it, and even then most people wouldn't. I'll also say that while there are some improvements I like just for cutting down on grinding, like the EXP Share is now party wide, most of the gameplay in general and difficulty of battles has been greatly reduced as time has gone on. I can't remember the last time the Elite Four was actually a challenge in the Pokemon games.....

      The rival thing doesn't bother me though because it does give it a slight change from always being the same scenario over and over again, but again, the over all difficultly of the battles has decreased so much that a player who has been around for more than a game or two rarely has the risk of being beat. In the past, having your rival suddenly stop you to battle was a legitimate threat, since they were usually at the end of a long stretch of trainers and wild pokemon, and they tended to be at either your level or higher with everything they had. Now it's a mild inconvenience at worst......

      I'll still say though that the lack of post game content in recent games is the biggest problem, as well as the fact that they made the battle area implement the tournament meta, rather than fun trainers to battle. Going back through the areas and retraining pokemon and such is fun, but just battling the wild pokemon over and over again gets a bit dull, and there's not much incentive to train "fun" teams since there's not really anyone to battle but other players and the battle tree AI that is essentially built as the fun police....

      Also, while the ideas of the "Trials" were neat, they ended up being dumbed down so much that it took no effort at all to beat them. Gym battles and puzzles were significantly better, so I hope they see a return. I'd also like to see the return of actual puzzles in the games rather than the "walk straight along this path until you get to the end" mentality that has been present recently. Remember Rayquaza's tower and trying to climb it with the Mach Bike? That was fun, yet as you said, the games as a whole have been getting dumbed down more and more.....

      @Gamer3427
      Ah, yes, the Sky Pillar was pretty fun for me as well - though the constant Claydols got really annoying really fast -.-
      And as I've made clear, I hope, I haven't actually played Sun/Moon myself, though I've seen a few LP's and Nuzlocke's of it - and as you can imagine, there isn't much post-main-story content that appears in LP's... So I'll take your word for it being quite dull - I can certainly imagine it...
      Though I will ask, what's your take on the whole Darwinism aspect of Sun/Moon? The Alola versions of Pokemon I mean? As someone who - again - didn't play it, I found it a rather interesting addition to the universe, though it would have made much more sense if it didn't first appear in the - what, 6th is it now? - region and nowhere else...

      @M_Keyn It's a pretty interesting concept, and it would definitely be nice if it showed up more in the other games prior to this one, but over all most of the new variations are just kind of "eh" in terms of the actual way they play. The real problem there is that they picked some of the less usable pokemon to give these variations to, so when it comes down to the actual gameplay aspect, they tend to be overshadowed rather quickly. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what more they do with it in the future though, as the potential is definitely there. I would prefer though if they didn't try so hard to make them look just utterly ridiculous compared to the original versions, since most of them look like a parody version of the pokemon more than anything else.....

      It is a bit odd though that they've suddenly started taking this route with the variations though, as originally the "variations" tended to be more along the lines of pokemon having evolved depending on the region to be completely different "species", such as Pidgey compared to Taillow, rather than simply being variations of the same species. I know from a gameplay perspective it's just an attempt to get a few more variations out there to get more uses from older pokemon, but from an in-universe perspective it's a bit odd to suddenly have.......

      That being said, I do like that from a gameplay perspective, these new variations do function essentially as completely different pokemon but with some similar moves. Obviously the Alolan Vulpix isn't able to use fire based attacks, so the vast majority of its move set is changed up. Likewise, the Alolan Geodude is an electric type which opens up different strategies with it. It does open up a lot of potential if they can find reasons to change up the typing of other existing pokemon enough. The real problem is that they only selected a few of the older pokemon to give new forms to, and stuck with just a couple of types for the new forms, when they could have experimented with a lot of different variations that could provide us with some pretty unique typing. I'm hoping they will go through and add in a good few more with newer generations from here on out. That being said, the concern I have is that since these variations are region specific, it does mean there's the potential that we'll have a harder time getting certain ones as the generations progress due to each game being set in new regions.....

      Also, while I won't say that it's a perfect game, I will say that Sun/Moon are worth playing if you're a pokemon fan in general. There is a lot of fun to be had with it, even with its problems, and I consider the games to be some of the best in recent generations. I do agree with something you said though, in that unlike most long running series, the pokemon games don't seem to be progressing with their fan base in terms of age. It's particularly noticeable to me when even though most of the fanbase has been playing the games for years, the player character is always limited to being a small child, which sticks out even more as the graphics have improved. Not a big issue of course, but I do wish the games would give you a bit more options there since that's just an odd thing that has stayed the same while everything else has been changing up.....

      @Gamer3427
      Hmm - I have to admit that I hadn't really thought of the Taillow/Pidgey/etc connection that way - I just saw it as the "dominant" or "semi-dominant" bird-pokemon species in the regions, especially since, I think, you could still get some of the older ones in the reserves or under special conditions they would appear, etc etc...
      On the note of the variations - I feel however that no matter how much you changed the pokemon it would feel like a parody of said pokemon, mostly because if you changed it too much, you really wouldn't be able to call it a e.g. Rattata or something still, if it looked almost entirely different.
      On the note of the typing - it was probably something of a "test the waters" move on their part, seeing how the community would react to the variations of the pokemon, so they didn't want to go overboard with it - not to mention that if you suddenly spammed the variations of the same pokemon, all different elements it would come out suuuper-cheesy... Like really - Geodude Ground, Geodude Air, Geoudude Fire - it threatens to turn into something that could cascade downhill - especially with the community often being very split in their opinions *cough-Brionne-cough*...
      On the note of me playing it - well, after having seen the story through twice - sorta thrice - I just don't feel like I would really enjoy it as much - all the other games I've played, I played first and only then bothered watching Nuzlocke's for example... I will say though, that the story itself was pretty good, characters included... Though I will admit I seriously cringed when I first saw Team Skull... But they grew on me... Much like a mole... But it's that one mole that you would miss if it suddenly disappeared... Mhm... I'm getting weird aren't I? Should probably go to sleep tbh... xD

      @M_Keyn Eh, sleep is overrated. As for the typing, I was mostly meaning that it seemed like they didn't do much to try and differentiate the existing types from the original pokemon. Particularly with some such as Grimer, Rattata, and Meowth which they just added dark typing to when those pokemon already had a fair number of dark type attacks. I wasn't meaning give a ton of different typings for each one so that we got three new Geodudes or something, but rather have some variation to the typings. Out of the ten Alolan forms, (not counting evolutions), five were either Ice or Dark type as the change. The other ones were pretty mundane and aside from the Ice ones being that they evolved as ice types because they lived on cold mountains, and Marrowak being understandably a ghost type change, most don't have anything to do with the region when it comes to their typing. There's no reason we couldn't have seen a water type Ratatta, or a grass type Meowth for example, (even if there are too many grass types in Alola as is), or Grimer/Muk getting a fairy typing to go with their newfound bright colors, since those would have fit the region better than "just make these traditionally villain pokemon a dark type even though the region as a whole is a lot brighter and has less urban environments than most"......

      My complaint about the appearance of them is just that they seemed to go out of their way to make the Alolan forms of some goofy looking. Executor, Dugtrio, Persian, Raticate, and Muk being the main examples. Even with as goofy as Dugtrio is, I can give it a pass since from what I can tell, it's "hair" is meant to be a reference to a phenomenon known as "Pele's Hair", (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele%27s_hair), which is a form of volcanic glass named after the Hawaiian goddess of Volcanoes. Likewise, the actual appearance of it is similar both to several depictions of Pele herself, and how surfers are often depicted, though the surfer part makes little sense in context given that it's a ground/steel type that has never been shown outside of it's heads poking out of the ground, which is the last thing you want trying to surf. Executor can also get a pass due to the island theme, though it's typing of dragon makes little sense. The other three can make sense in that they're references to types of animals, (and polution in muk's case), but nothing that is readily recognizable as being specific to the theme of the region.....

      @Gamer3427
      Ah, I see - I really did misunderstand the typing argument there.
      For the limitation in types - I actually agree with it - though I also agree that the types they limited themselves to were not really regional, as you said. I would certainly have expected some more Water types or something, much like I would expect a lot of Poison types if we ever get an Australian-style region xD
      Though I feel that the overabundance of Dark types might still fit in with the folklore/magic aspect of Hawaiian culture.
      But yes, Dragon Exeggutor is... special...
      Though at the same time, making something like Rattata (Literally a rodent/rat pokemon) have water typing just seems... Wrong to me... Like making Magnemite a part Water-type (An extreme example considering he's Electric-Steel)...
      On the other hand, making, I dunno, Muk a Water type - when he's already a liquid basically - that seems more appropriate. Though I will say that I would sooner consider the Alolan version Dark rather than Fairy, mostly because he looks hella messed up... o.o (Muk and Grimer I mean)
      Though, again, I agree that they should have picked a more regional theme with the extra typing - setting a precedent for it even, so the very region itself could hint to the variations it might hold. Considering the whole volcano-sterotype for Hawaii I would have thought Fire and Rock might be decent, along with Water and perhaps Ghost or something for the folklore-side... Stick with those, grab two dozen old pokemon, change their types to what makes most sense - throw them in with another 150 or so new ones. Boom. You have a generic pokemon game with a new twist...

      @M_Keyn I can agree with most of what you said. Honestly, the complete lack of fire types comparatively speaking is a bit odd. With Dugtrio in particular, if the idea of his hair is based on Pele's Hair, it doesn't really make sense that he got steel typing rather than fire, since Pele is the goddess of volcanoes, and Pele's Hair is a phenomenon of strings of glass made by lava. Glass is pretty much the exact opposite of steel. Let's hope that with future games they start making the variants match the regions, and spread out a bit more than what they have. It's definitely a good concept though to breath new life into older pokemon that aren't used as much. I can't remember the last time I've seen or heard of someone using a Dugtrio or Eggxecutor for example. They probably won't be picked up by players still, but at least they're not being as forgotten as they used to be.....

      @Gamer3427
      Mhm - hopefully they've taken the feedback from Sun&Moon and will use it to improve upon the variations in the next game... Which hopefully won't take 2 years again (o.o)
      Then again, they might just reboot - what is it now - Diamond and Pearl... Games I honestly did like a fair bit - though most people seem to dislike them =/
      Either way - I think I would dislike them at least somewhat purely because there REALLY shouldn't be a remake coming out next :P Though the rumours seem to think they are next on the list.

      @ M_Keyn Well the cycle has been for years that they'd do a new generation, followed by a remake of the oldest generation that hasn't been remade yet, (or until they started doing that, a third game to pair with the existing two from the generation), followed next by another new generation. In all honesty, it's probably because it's a lot easier and quicker to remake an existing game, than to create an entirely new region and series of pokemon, so the remakes probably aren't taking away from the speed we get new generations all that much. I'm sure it takes some development assets away programming wise, but for pokemon games the main thing that probably takes the longest time is the region and pokemon designs, as well as figuring out what they are going to implement as the newest gimmick for that new generation. We probably wouldn't see new generations any quicker if they skipped the remakes than we do now with the remakes, so I'm fine with it.....

      Also, yea, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum were good games for sure. It was after that though that the series started going down hill a lot in my opinion, though there are a lot of fans of Black/White as well because of the story, and I'll admit that it did have some good features and some interesting pokemon. There's not really any of the generations that have been "bad" per se, but the older ones do hold up a lot better from an over all experience view point, particularly for fans who prefer the more challenging aspect that is absent in the newest games.....

      Over all, I'm fine if the remake of them is the next to come out, particularly because I want there to be a chance for them to actually try and see what worked and what didn't with this generation, rather than rushing to put out a new one. In all honesty, I'm hoping that before they put out a new generation, Nintendo puts out another full handheld, (not the Switch, since it lacks the convenience of transportation that makes a good handheld in my opinion). As it is, Gamefreak has been trying to push the technical limitations of the games, rather than improving core gameplay foremost, which has led to lag issues with the 3DS and a loss of functions such as triple battles, (which were my favorite), rotation battles, ect. Losing gameplay features isn't something I look forward to, and as is the game chugs horribly during double battles, so unless the hardware receives an upgrade, we're going to either have them force it as "New 3DS Only", (which is barely an upgrade and only supported by one other game at the moment), or they're going to cut more features as time goes on. Knowing how game companies work in general, it's unlikely they're going to cut back on graphics to improve the way the game runs, since the gaming world at the moment prizes graphics above all else it seems.......
