Arachnophobe warning (even though it's an adorable animated only-kinda-looks-like-a spider).

I'm going to promote someone else's starter campaign because

    a) it helps a kid go to college.

    b) it's a cute talking plushie that I want.

but it won't get made if there aren't enough pre-sales.

Fun fact: Lucas, the Spider was created to help arachnophobes with their phobia.

Fun fact: The spider that is the inspiration for Lucas has never had a case of a bite on a person.

Fun fact: The hunting spiders such as the jumping spider that is the inspiration for Lucas are smarter than orb-weavers and trappers.

Fun fact: Hunting spiders don't just sit idle and wait for their prey and can't waste energy on things they can't eat. So, they're not stimulus-attack like other spiders.

Fun fact: Jumping spiders have excellent eyesight compared to other spiders.

  • SpaceVenture - a venture into the glory days long past...

PC-playing people as old as me and @Ryan will remember Space Quest - a series of graphical adventure games. It was fun and funny and often just plain odd.

The people who made that series of games for Sierra (who currently exists only in name) are, now, making a spiritual successor for themselves called, SpaceVenture.

As a fan of Roger Wilco, I am watching this venture with great interest. I see that they're trying hard to reclaim the glory days of adventure games... but I think that they're digging too deep into the past.

Adventure games look to me like they're in two categories now. You have the Visual Novel and modern Graphic Adventure. The Visual Novel is similar to what you can see all over Steam like Hatoful Boyfriend. The modern Graphic Adventure is like The Wolf Among Us or Life is Strange.

The style of the old graphical adventure games is like Adventure Game Studio - flat scenery and flat, animated sprites moving around in the scenery. It's nothing like the modern adventure games.

Sierra recognized this when they commissioned a finale for King's Quest - first tapping Telltale (The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, A Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands) and then tapping The Odd Gentleman. The result was a modern Graphic Adventure in the style of The Wolf Among Us (minus "Quicktime events"), not an Adventure Game Studio flat game. It had enough nostalgia while not dragging the player back into 1986.

Guys from Andromeda (formerly known as The Two Guys from Andromeda when they worked for Sierra) are going with the 1980s-1990s flat, sprite-animated graphical adventure game that one could make with Adventure Game Studio (and probably would have saved them a lot of time by using AGS instead of building their own interpreter).

I predict that this new story will not appeal to fans of the old games and new players in the classic style. A new story today needs to be in today's standards.

Maybe Sierra could show them how it's done with an official finale to their Space Quest, but fans made their own finales and I believe that Sierra doesn't want to trample upon them - and the fans used AGS with a shorter dev cycle than what SpaceVenture is seeing (6 years and still going), and the fan games for Space Quest were done in the amateur devs' spare time with good results.

I had hopes for SpaceVenture when they announced the kickstarter. I'm far less hopeful now given their published progress.

You can't turn back time. Maybe, that's for the best.

  • Broadcast, Pilot Month, Theater Mode and more!

    Stab RT Broadcast Producer

    Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to write a little update regarding things happening in here at Rooster Teeth regarding Broadcast, Pilot Month, Theater Mode and more!

First things first, Pilot Month. Pilots are interesting here at RT. A television pilot is usually kept behind closed doors, analyzed, and shown to a testing group before making it anywhere to an audience. Here at RT, the community is our testing group. And the pilot is put out ahead of any official season to get your opinion. We want to hear your thoughts, because at the end of the day it's a show for you and the rest of the Rooster Teeth community. For Pilot month Broadcast has two new shows, very different from any other shows we have done in the past. They are Gorq's Quest and Murder Room (link). Both have been in the works here for a bit and they have grown progressively during their testing phase. I can't say much right now, but you can see Gorq's Quest on May 15th and Murder Room on May 31st. I think both will be a favorite among community members who enjoy the game-based shows.

Alright, now for some Theater Mode. I hope you've enjoyed the first season of Funhaus Theater Mode. It was awesome to work with Elyse and the rest of the Funhaus team on the season and I hope to do more of the show in the future. I personally have really enjoyed Funhaus' style for the show- going for something a little closer to the original MST3K style.

Recently we shot our first live episode of Theater Mode at the Alamo Draft House in South Austin. Thank you to everyone who came out to the event. This is a first for us. If it proves successful it can mean doing this type of production more often and possibly not just in Austin. You can expect the edited release during the next volume of Theater Mode. Now that I got you thinking about the next volume, let's talk about it for a second. We are working on acquiring new films for the next volume as well as testing a few new ideas- TM Live being one test. I don't have much to say beyond that, except for wait for the official announcement sometime soon.

The last thing I wanted to mention in this update is regarding changes in RT Broadcast's crew. You probably saw on this past Monday's episode of the RT Podcast that Eric Baudor from Mega 64 has joined our crew. Eric will be taking the position as our new Podcast Producer, working on RT Podcast, Always Open, and other emerging shows in our lineup. We welcome him to our rag-tag team of Broadcasters.

Lastly, you've probably noticed a new face on Fridays in the Broadcast pre-stream for Off Topic and Death Battle Cast. Dennis Fant is his name. He's a former Broadcast intern that had a particular talent for our graphics system and has been helping me by taking over a few weekly shows. Now I'm happy to say he'll be joining us as the permanent Live Graphics Operator for all our shows here at Broadcast.

As for me, I'll be working more behind the scenes as the Producer for Let's Play Productions in Broadcast. Basically anytime a Let's Play group is shooting in Broadcast, I'll be there to work on it one way or another.

That's all I have for now.
    See ya!

I saw something recently and it has me curious about what the folks here think.

Let's say that you've been attacked by a zombie and are infected. You're going to turn into a zombie and there's no avoiding it - not even a shotgun retirement.

What kind of clothes do you want to be wearing for the rest of your unnatural unlife when you become undead?

  • Tech Gremlins are REAL - rough week

    RTcastMichael RT Broadcast guy

There are weeks where everything works exactly as planned....and some weeks you are lucky if the lights even turn on.

With adjustments coming to Broadcast and new items coming in, I get nervous and check equipment over and over to ensure things run as planned. Some of these are outside of my hands and therefore have to hope everything falls into place as planned. That didn't happen.

    • New Fiber Line - used to transfer files between systems FASTER than basic connection
      • Transfers fast.....but not as expected under current gear so POST is not thrilled  frowning
    • TriCaster for Conference room streaming - To help boost quality and ease of small room streams we ditch a laptop for our TriCaster Mini
      • Gave it to Nick and 7 minutes before his stream is supposed to start the machine crashes and won't reboot  cry
    • Laptop for Video Playback - We had to use a nearby laptop to playback a video for commentary
      •  When all the cast arrive for the read the laptop freezes and won't reboot
    • Demo Camera to be new OTS intro - We have a camera in demo and would really like to use to tease new OTS intro as season finale and highlight for Matt and Burnie to see.
      • Camera wouldn't fit on Ronin and handheld just wasn't stable enough making the risk of error too high. The backup RED also wouldn't work once we found out the Ronin remote wasn't connecting and the thumb controls were missing  dizzy_face

Yeah it happens. We do our best so the audience doesn't see the errors and the show isn't interrupted, and some weeks are easier than others (like when things don't break). But that is why there is always another week to fix those items and get things back in order.

  • Control Room Update - Feb 2018

    RTcastMichael RT Broadcast guy

With LIVE WEEK taking most of our team and equipment out of the office for the week - We found some time and some plans to make slight changes in how the control room is structured and organized. With the last redesign being right before Tuesday Night Game Fight (May 2017) it is frustrating that it only lasted a few months, but it is also exciting to see our growth continue and our room expand to handle more intense shows and make productions more efficient to all in the room.

The majority of the updates are hidden and more to help keep the room looking clean and organized, but it goes without saying some help our productions and make the room more modular and customize-able depending on the production. This includes under-desk racks/shelves, New streaming PC, Power and Internet management, 4 Production Position Front Row (Engineer, TD, Director/Producer, Graphics) and flexible back row (Tech Flex [Bryan workstation] Associate Producer, Production Manager [Gavin C.] ) and more.

We plan for these adjustments to help us bring better shows to you and improve our working environment allowing for more options to become available to us.

As a heads up - there are still more changes coming to the room and possibly switching the location and angle of the prestream camera (again).

This has been a fun and crazy project to be working on and planning for the past few weeks, but I am happy to see phase 1 almost to completion - can't wait for the room to be finalized (and probably changed a few months later.

    Enjoy The Show! #RTbroadcast

    RTcastMichael RT Broadcast guy

The day has finally come. *Extra Life 2017!!*

A lot of work from a group of very talented people will finally be shown to the World. But the event is so much more than just a production. I can't thank everyone enough for helping fund this cause I have grown to care so much for.

While I want to show and tell you everything, some things are worth waiting for and this is one of them. Here is what I can fill you in for now.

Streaming - YouTube/Site/App/Twitch/Facebook (YouTube Rooster Teeth and TheKnow) Youtube on RT and site will also have a mutlicam feature to switch between main feed and BTS feed (BTS will include PiP of main feed as well so you dont miss anything)

    Archiving/Recording -

YouTube won't post 24 hour stream and twitch will only keep for a few days after. We are recording a low res version good for the web. We will check file size and where to post. Details most likely after stream event. I hear everyone wanting the recording to watch again - we will do what we can.

Best way to contact is #rtextralife. Working to make YT and Twitch chat accessible to all as well as a quick way to information. If you need to reach Broadcast - we will do our best to read #RTbroadcast

We are working with new software so names and donations will be worked on midstream hoping to find our solution. So do your worst to try and break our system (please play nice

  • Sneak Peek into Extra Life 2017

    RTcastMichael RT Broadcast guy

Would you believe Extra Life 2017 still has some kinks to work on. We are wanting to make this the best extra life streaming experience you have had and share it with more people. Here is just a sneak at some items we are working toward for this Extra Life.

    • Viewing it in more places with more people. We are looking to stream to Youtube, Twitch, RT site/app, Facebook* (720p HD feed only)*
    •  BTS Feed for Multi-cams on YouTube. This feed will most likely include program audio and a PiP of the program feed with a BTS camera of our choice. Option for the RT site may be available after further testing (Multi-cam will be available on RT web site as we are looking to embed YouTube on the Extra Life page)
    •  LOUD NOISES! This still needs testing for compatibility, but we are looking to make LEET donations more present with on screen graphics that pop up and our favorite siren is making a return. Depending on Technical Director the quick cutting camera will return as well.
    • On Screen updates/counters. Items like wheel counts, URL updates, Upcoming events, Current Stretch goals. These will be updated when they are available or when needed. With all this information on screen, we hope to not pull attention away from the stream, but rather make sure everyone is informed. If this for any reason gets too crowded or too much, we may start limiting what appears on screen at a given time.
    • GAMEZ - Like....SO MANY GAMES. We are looking to have so many games playing during the event with 9 gaming stations. While a lot of the attention from the event will be main stage, we are looking to keep with Extra Life motto and play games for 24 hours.

That's all I have to share with you at the moment, but I still have some tricks up my sleeves. I hope you are excited with the upcoming Extra Life as much as I am. Let me know what you are looking forward to the most or what you hope to see.
