Tried to keep a movie diary last year and gave up around September. Gonna try and pick it up again. We'll see if I can keep it going till end of the year. You can check it out here and maybe start your own as well. What did you guys watch this weekend?

Wanted to try my hand at some double exposure designs and decided that all these ELR photos I have lying around would be good fodder for such a thing. Enjoy.

  • Square Starting to Fix Final Fantasy XV Chapter 13 Next Month

    Eddy Writer - The Know

Square Enix has been taking a lot of heat for certain portions in the latter half of Final Fantasy XV. Since the game's release, director Hajime Tabata has said his team plans on fixing a few problems with Chapter 13, which seems to take the brunt of the criticism. Fortunately for all you Chapter 13 haters out there, the road to healing will begin soon!

The March 28 update for Final Fantasy XV -- which will also bring the new DLC focusing on beefcake Gladiolus -- will also start the process of updating Chapter 13. According to Tabata, the first update will focus on some gameplay improvements to make the section a little less frustrating. The next update will come at a later date, since it requires recording new audio in order to help parts of the story make a little more sense.

There's been a lot of discussion about whether or not fixing Chapter 13 is a good move or not. Personally, I found it to be incredibly frustrating, so I can see the need for fixing it. But it's also making some people wonder if it sets a weird precedent for releasing really problematic (or unfinished, by some accusations) gameplay and then dealing with it much later after launch. I can see both arguments, but at the moment I'm supportive of Tabata and team doing what they can to shore up parts of Final Fantasy XV that they feel need some TLC.

What do you guys think? Did any of you play FFXV and hate Chapter 13?

  • New PSVR Bundles Incoming

    Eddy Writer - The Know

In the wake of sold out units all over the world, it seems like Sony is finally going to be restocking shelves with PlayStation VR. And, good news -- the (fairly costly) PlayStation peripheral is getting more bundles in keeping with the system demand.

The bundles were announced via the PlayStation Blog today. The first of these bundles is the PSVR launch bundle that debuted with the headset, featuring the PS camera, 2 Move controllers, a VR demo disc, and PSVR Worlds (a disc full of unique VR experiences). The second bundle will include all of that, except it'll replace VR Worlds with Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, the VR companion to the breakout hit Until Dawn.

It's nice to see that more bundles are coming -- up until now, if you missed out on a launch bundle, you had to try to scrounge together all the required PSVR pieces yourself, which could be a bit of a hassle. Hopefully this means that Sony will also be doing more to support VR and VR content in the near future. Last week they launched Resident Evil 7 -- a massive VR title -- with little-to-no fanfare. In fact, most of the promotion for it has been doing by fans and word-of-mouth, rather than by Sony or Capcom.

I actually did a bit of hands-on time with PSVR myself over the weekend, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with what it can do for what's basically low cost in comparison to other VR headsets on the market. The Batman Arkham VR experience, while short, was incredibly impressive, and something every fan of the series should try out. I was also really impressed with PSVR Worlds, and even though I was terrified during my brief time with it, Resident Evil 7.

How many of you guys have been interested in PSVR? Have you tried out any VR games?

  • The Monty Oum Performance Capture Stage

    Gray

Two years on, we still miss Monty's drive, his spirit. His goal was not to live forever but to leave something behind that does. In continuing the adventures of Team RWBY, and in pushing ourselves to go further with each and every story we tell, RT Animation is doing what we can to grow that legacy as much as possible.

RT Animation just moved into a new facility, and we wanted to be very sure to keep a sense of Monty's spark with us. We are dedicating The Monty Oum Performance Capture Stage in his honor.  We hope that as the team enters the new mocap area to bring characters to life, they take a moment to summon a little extra energy, get more motivated, and are surprised to discover even more creativity than they ever knew they had.

Thank you to the fans who sent us the star registry certificates, the plaque, and all his fan art that we will be adding over time.

    Thanks for everything, Monty.

    With love,

  • Hitman Gets Outlandish Trailer In Honor of Complete First Season

    Eddy Writer - The Know

In honor of the disc version of Hitman hitting store shelves this week, the folks at Square Enix have released a hilarious infomercial ad for the Steelbook edition. Hitman: The Complete First Season in physical form will also come with all 6 episodes of the stealth murder simulator, along with making-of documentaries, and the full soundtrack.

But don't just take it from me, listen to these absurd cable channel marketers instead.

The episodic release of Hitman was met with a lot of speculation when it was first announced, but Square Enix and IO Interactive's experiment has produced a really fantastic, fun game. The delivery structure enabled them to spend a lot of time varying up the game's environments, while still giving fans the sandbox treatments they've been craving from the series.

Personally, I've been loving the game. It's my first foray into Hitman, but the episodes make it nice and palatable, and it isn't hurt at all by not having a connected story. I'd actually love to see other games take this same route -- Splinter Cell in particular could benefit from releases like this, with new missions and multiple paths to take for each one.

What do you guys think of Hitman and the first season's full release?

  • The Not-So Oscars

    Jon The Risemonger

Out of curiosity I posted a Twitter poll asking people how many, if any, of the films nominated for Best Picture this year had they seen. More than half said "none" of them. Another 25% said "1 at most.". Personally I have seen all of them and would agree that they are all powerful and well made films but can certainly also agree that they are not the only good movies that came out in 2016. So I wanna hear from you!

Do me a favor, take a second to look at the movies and categories included in this year's Oscars (available here) and then if you have the time, leave a comment here with a suggestion for a movie or even a category that you think is missing. I would love to hear what movies you think should be recognized from last year as well as why you liked them. And please, feel free to pick any reason why a movie should be awarded. It can be the script, the editing, a special effect, it was so bad it was good, someone hot took their shirt off, the opening credits looked cool, an old lady in it said your favorite swear word, Ewan McGregor was in it, any reason you can think of, I'd love to hear it.

TL;DR Leave suggestions in the comments for movies from 2016 that the Academy did not recognize that you still liked and why.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Goes Gold, Gets Early Impressions

    Eddy Writer - The Know

Horizon Zero Dawn, one of the biggest PS4 exclusives of 2017, has officially gone gold! Guerilla made the milestone announcement on Twitter early this morning, along with a picture of the team in celebration.

Along with this news this week comes a number of hands-on press previews, with multiple outlets writing about the first 4 hours of the game. Saying that the early previews have been glowing would be a massive understatement. So far, the general consensus is that Horizon Zero Dawn is going to be one of those special titles, and that it's incredibly ambitious in its scope, as well as super addictive.

Polygon called it a beautiful, deadly open world; Eurogamer called it "surprisingly compelling" ; and Engadget says they're already hooked. In particular, Engadget's preview talks about how gorgeous the game is in 4K with HDR, which is one thing that has me pumped as well, being a new PS4 Pro and 4K HDR TV owner. Since Horizon was first scheduled for October (just ahead of the PS4 Pro), and was one of the first games built for PS4 Pro from the ground up, I'm expecting it to be the first big showcase of PS4 Pro's capabilities.

Fortunately, we won't have to wait too much longer now. Horizon Zero Dawn comes out on February 28. Any of you guys planning on getting it?

They announced Diego Luna is going to be in a remake of Scarface with production hopefully starting this spring. Diego was most recently in Rogue One and Scarface was most recently remade in 1983. I say "most recently remade" because the 1983 film is a remake of the 1932 film which is an adaptation of the 1929 novel by Armitage Trail.

    OCLmY6N.png

This year we also have remakes for King Kong, Beauty & the Beast, The Mummy, Spider-Man, It, Flatliners, Friday the 13th and Jumanji being made. In January we had 3 sequels and in February we have 3 more.

My point is last night I watched Captain Fantastic with Viggo Mortensen and it was magical and I want everyone to watch it so we can talk about it.

  • Ace Attorney Characters Playable in Monster Hunter Explore

    micaburton

Last week, Monster Hunter revealed that Sailor Moon will be celebrating it's anniversary by collaborating with Monster Hunter XX, putting the Cutie Moon Rod weapon and Luna into the game as a playable weapon and character. Now fans have another reason to get excited-- the mobile game Monster Hunter Explore is crossing over with the well loved franchise Ace Attorney. Although not known for their combat, popular characters Phoenix Wright, Maya, Miles Edgeworth, And Franziska von Karma will be battling it out in their own way in the Monster Hunter Universe.

How do they fight, you ask? Well, Phoenix and Maya have the police mascot-- Blue Badger-- on a stick which increases fire attacks by 1.5 and restores physical strength by 100. Miles and Franziska on the other hand fight with the "Contradiction-Piercing Lance" which is hilariously jst Phoenix Wright's "OBJECTION" arm. It even comes with a shield that mimics the famous "OBJECTION" graphic. Their weapon doubles water attack damage and has overall more attack power than the Badger.

    img_ss_1.jpgimg_ss_3.jpg

The chance to unlock the Ace Attorney crossover only lasts until midnight on January 31st, so hurry over! But don't worry if you miss out on this, Monster Hunter XX  with the Sailor Moon expansion releases on March 18th.

I'm writing today's prompts post while listening to music from epic films scores so it sort of feels like I am writing this while riding on top of a dragon up in the clouds instead of in my pajamas next to a dirty plate where I just ate my breakfast from. What should we make jokes about this week?

    SYNC ABOUT IT

    • Finish the sentence: How to...?
    • Feel free to submit more than one idea.

    COME AGAIN?

You give me a story and I make them act it out. This week I'm looking for prompts involving:

    • Something strange that happened at the gym
    • Things you don't want to learn about at a family reunion

    ASS SWIPE (Prompts v2)

    • We need suggestions for personality traits of the worst date ever.
    • Submit 1 trait or a even a set of 2 that play off of each other.
    • Feel free to get weird with this one, you've seen how the game goes ;)

    POST SHOW: GIVING HEADLINES

    • Find an odd story from the recent news with an equally odd headline that we can remove a word or two from for the the guests to fill in the blank.
    • Look for headlines where a blank space would leave the story open to a lot of different interpretations.

Now the music has turned into James Bond music so I think I will go take a shower now while singing the Adele song from Skyfall. xoxo The Risemonger

In a nutshell, the Vlog will now be available to the public after a window on FIRST. We are also going to start producing it on a weekly basis. We plan to make a FIRST only vlog that is more of a "state of the union" for Rooster Teeth.

Thanks for the suggestion that the Monday vlog should be the one to introduce the public to the production. I agree it's a good representation.

PS there are some new shots in the Monday Vlog. I spent time with a couple more groups to get a more complete view of the company.

  • Mass Effect Andromeda Gets New Trailer Tomorrow

    Eddy Writer - The Know

Bioware announced via social media today that yet another Mass Effect trailer will debut tomorrow. Along with the announcement came the slightest of teases -- a 15 second look at the upcoming release. On Facebook, the video's description reads: "A new galaxy awaits, but no one said it would welcome us. Tomorrow, you'll get your next look at Mass Effect: Andromeda."

But lest you get too excited, it seems like this is going to be another cinematic trailer of sorts, rather than straight up gameplay. Which, if I'm being honest, is a bit of a bummer. Even though Bioware has been hitting us with a media blitz about the game since they announced the release date, they've still done so without really showing much of anything substantial. Considering the game is only coming out in a matter of less than 8 weeks, that's a bit concerning.

Part of me wonders if they're holding back on showing off more of this game because there's something significantly different about the gameplay, or if it's just that they're worried about the backlash they saw with Mass Effect 3 in general, and are opting to keep things nice and understated this time around. Something tells me this game is going to be awfully close to Dragon Age: Inquisition -- not only in its gameplay systems and structures, but also in its staying power. While I loved Inquisition, it wasn't really a game that stuck with me.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong about Mass Effect Andromeda. Fortunately, we don't have to wait too much longer to find out.

  • "Sailor Moon" Musical Heads to Anime Matsuri

    micaburton

Big news for Sailor Moon loving theatre nerds: Sailor Moon The Musical is slated to to a special one night performance during Anime Matsuri-- a convention in Houston. The popular production which has had multiple successful runs in Japan are flying out their star studded cast to put on the musical April 7th, the first day of Anime Matsuri.

    animematsuri_670.jpg

    The cast includes:

    • Hotaru Nomoto as Sailor Moon
    • Yume Takeuchi as Sailor Mercury
    • Karen Kobayashi as Sailor Mars
    • Kaede as Sailor Jupiter
    • Rimo Hasegawa as Sailor Venus
    • Syu Shiotsuki as Sailor Uranus
    • Sayaka Fujioka as Sailor Neptune
    • Mikako Ishii as Sailor Pluto
    • Karin Takahashi as Sailor Saturn
    • Yuga Yamato as Tuxedo Mask

Longtime anime fans know Japan loves putting their popular shows on stage and they are-- surprisingly-- always done very well. Budgets are large, the cast is talented, and the costumes are ones cosplayers would kill for. The popular Kuroshitsuji musical was so successful, two long-running sold out sequels were produced.

It is very rare America gets the treat of professional anime musicals, so I know I'm excited! Who will I see at Anime Matsuri singing along?

  • VR Waifu Simulators Launch in Japan

    micaburton

What's better than zombie fighting in VR? Boobs in VR. And Japan is not holding back when it comes to using this new technology to give us all the virtual reality boobs we could ever ask for. KOEI Tecmo Games announced yesterday that finally, after fan's have waited for so long, VR support for Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Fortune would launch today. Players who already have the game purchased will have a free update until February 28th, and after that, it will cost about $13 USD.

    USnIPaG.jpg

In "VR Paradise" mode, players will be able to access Photo Paradise, Graveure Paradise, and Event Paradise all in virtual reality. And if that's not enough, the girls' rooms at the end of every night will all be accessible as well. Players can also purchase a "VR passport" for about $27 USD which will allow them to unlock Marie Rose and Honoka as playable or viewable characters.

If Dead or Alive is a little too over the top sexually for you, don't worry, Japan has it all. A relatively new title from Bandai Namco called Summer Lesson is starting to get attention in the states for its new offering of English subtitles. In a twist on traditional dating sim, instead of just getting to know a character and develop a romantic relationship, you are also her school tutor and are tasked with making sure she has a successful education as well. The majority of the game takes place in Hikari's bedroom over the course of 7 days, giving the player a chance to grow and develop their relationship with the digital girl.

Now, before people get their VR panties in a bunch, this is not a hentai or VR sex game. If anything, it's "education simulator 2K17". But, that does not mean there wont be sexual undertones that can be played up or down depending on who is wearing the VR headset. To each their own, as they say!

I know I can't wait to go to Japan this summer and pick up these games personally-- the future is now!

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue- Jan 24th - PS4

Giving longtime Kingdom Hearts fans something new to chew on while they wait for Kingdom Hearts 3, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue combines Dream Drop Distance with two new experiences!

First off, Dream Drop Distance has been remastered in HD and features a much faster battler experience than in previous incarnations of the franchise!

The second addition is a new movie titled Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover.  This tells the story of the “Foretellers”, and links earlier parts in the series to more recent revelations.  These story points were briefly explored in the mobile only game Kingdom Hearts Unchained X.

The final experience in Final Chapter Prologue is the part to get the most excited about!  Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage is a brand new story featuring Aqua and takes place after the events of Birth By Sleep.  This brand new game links to Kingdom Hearts 3 directly and offers fans of the series a taste of what KH3 will be like!

    Tales of Berseria - Jan 24th - PS4 / Jan 26th - PC

The seventeenth game in the Tales of series hits PS4 on the 24th and PC on the 26th!  Skits, full animated cutscenes, the much loved battle system, and of course the unique Artes all return!  A new element to the series is the Soul Gauge which replaces old combo mechanics that allows for moves to be reflected and “Souls” to be stolen and absorbed!  Building up this gauge allows characters to enter a “Break Soul” state that gives them the ability to exceed combo limits, trigger unique effects, and more.  Fans of the series may notice this world and it’s history seem a bit familiar, which is intended as Berseria is set in the distant past of the world shown in Zestiria.

    Yakuza 0 - Jan 24th - PS4

It’s time to return to the world of the Japanese mafia!  Yakuza 0 takes the series way back to 1988 and giving more information on the past of Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima.

Major changes in the series come primarily from the battle system.  Both Kiryu’s and Majima’s fighting styles can be switched in the middle of battle.  Kiryu has Brawler, Beast, and Rush styles while Majima has Thug, Slugger, and Breaker.  Each style has its pros and cons, some are faster, some utilize heavy weapons, and others can be a bit more stylish and fun.

Tongue in cheek humor, fictionalized versions of Tokyo's Kabukicho Shinjuku Golden Gai areas and Osaka's Dotonbori areas, a deep character customization and growth system, as well as a ton of minigames, Yakuza 0 has tons to offer.

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard - Jan 24th - PS4, Xbox One, PC

The true survival horror has returned yet again!  The seventh installment in the main series offers some very different gameplay and huge changes to the series as a whole.

Appropriately, RE7 is set in 2017, four years after the events of Resident Evil 6.  While this game is indeed set in the same universe as the other Resident Evil games and their effects are felt on the world, RE7’s events are not directly tied to any other in the series.  This makes it a great starting point for those who are not familiar with the series.

For more information on RE7, check out our Know Before You Go on the game!

  • Eleven Little Roosters Game Corrections for Week 2, FAQ, and Week 1 Solutions!

    JoshtheFlanagan

Hey guys! Well, first off, congrats on your first week of sleuthing! We'll be posting week 1 winners shortly, but roughly 25% of you arrived at the correct answer.

Here's the link to guessing for Week 2 when you're ready...

And can still find all our lovely info, including updates, at the official ELR website.

THE GAME, WEEK 2 -- PLEASE READ FOR CORRECTIONS/PATCHES!

Well, this week's starting off a bit rocky! Sorry about that. Here's a handful of corrections to get you back on track (consider this us "patching" the game):

    • Haywood File 10 cannot be found until public release. Why that is -- and how you find it -- are still on you to figure out...
    • There's a slight correction to Haywood File #8. The organization mentioned should be the UN, not NATO, though most of you figured this out already.
    • There's an audio puzzle that's full of glitches! For those who know what I'm talking, just know the FIRST digit is ..--- and the last is -----  and that the letter you THINK is an L is actually a capital "i." Hooray!

    Answers to recent Game FAQs:

    • an organization CAN take itself out
    • an organization can be the weekly assassin more than once
    • an organization is still in play so long as ONE official member remains alive

    Walkthrough for Week 1

(all Week 1 Haywood Files have been posted to our Gallery)

    FILE 1: THE FREEBIE

Scan the QR Code on the "Ryan Haywood Mole Finder" flyer (telegraphed a bit by with The Colonel's meta-line "this one's a freebie"). Haywood file 1 also informs you how to find the remaining four files -- seven digit codes plugged in as a bit.ly link. It also suggests you check out the SS Boyz Berlin show, which happens to be one of the four 360 prologue videos...

FILE 2: NUMBERS IN THE CROWD

Following the lead from File 1, the code for file 2 is hidden in the first 360 video where the Sex von Shaukel Boyz are touring in Berlin. Looking away from the immediate action, you'll eventually find 7 people in t-shirts with numbers on them. Plug them in the link in the order they appear and you'll have File 2.

    FILE 3: SUBTITLE SCRAMBLE

There are two sets of subtitles in the episode -- one in (very bad) Norwegian with the henchmen during the opening, and the other with the Sex von Shaukel Boyz at the Rooster Room table. Look closely and you'll notice some are slightly bolder than the rest. Plug them into the link in the order the bolded letters appear to find File 3.

    FILE 4: COLOR BY NUMBER

During the end titles, there are a handful of colored numbers that blip on as the "The Eleven Little Roosters" appears. There are 7 pairs of different colors, and one of two numbers in the pair is a 1-7. Put the paired numbers in the order of the 1-7, and you'll find File 4.

FILE 5: EYE FOR AN EYEPATCH

This one's hiding on the eye chart during Gavin the 3rd's eye exam. To decode it, simply pay attention to the way The Big Cock's eyepatch slides later in the episode (as pointed out by the SS Boyz). If you time the edits right -- and noting which eye of his can SEE, not which eye the patch covers -- you'll get Left, Right, Right, Left, None, Both, Left, which will give you the link to File 5.

    SOLVING FOR TARGET

Combining info from Files 2 and 4, you're looking for a group with multiple assassins, but also with an odd number. That leaves only Mexico.

    SOLVING FOR ASSASSIN

Combining info from Files 3 and 5, you'll need to draw out the seated positions at the table, start the file at Christoph's seat (who had the apple), and slide around in directions from File 3 to solve. The directions are given from POV of the file itself (when referring to slightly right or left as crossing the table), which settles you with Marquee Marquis.

  • Alien 5 Chances Don't Sound Good

    Eddy Writer - The Know

While everybody's getting all jazzed about Alien Covenant -- a semi-bridge between Prometheus and Alien -- coming later this year, the status of another Alien movie project has been a bit questionable. Since it was put on hold last year, fans have been wondering what the deal is with the upcoming Alien 5, a film set to reunite Sigourney Weaver and Michael Beihn as Ripley and Hicks in a story that pretends like Alien 3 never even happened.

Writer/director Neill Blomkamp gave only the slightest updates about when and if we'll see Alien 5 on the big screen on Twitter this weekend. When one fan asked what the chances are of seeing the movie, the District 9 helmer said "slim." So yeah, that doesn't seem particularly hopeful.

While we don't know a ton about what path Alien 5 would have followed, it would have been interesting to see the films follow some of the non canon books that have been established over the last couple of decades. In particular, Steve Perry's Aliens book follow the story of what is essentially Hicks and Newt in the years following the massacre at LV-426 in Aliens. They end up on what turns out to be a secret defense colony that's trying to turn the xenomorphs into controllable weapons. After an infestation breaks out on Earth, the army decides to take their aliens to battle Earth's aliens, and things (naturally) go horribly wrong.

Some of it was pretty silly (like the fact that the characters weren't ACTUALLY Newt and Hicks, for legal reasons), but the idea of seeing the government's ambitions with the aliens fully play out was always interesting to me. Maybe one day we'll actually get to see Blomkamp's version of Alien 5... but honestly, given some of his most recent film endeavors and the quality of Prometheus, maybe it's best to leave the franchise for a little bit. At least until Covenant is out.
